Confirmed to be eStro. They closed down the dormitory and practice house last month. All of the players have had their contracts terminated and have returned home.
According to Fomos, one of Korea's pro-gaming team sponsors wants to either sell or disband the team. Anonymous sources state that they this sponsor has been interested in selling their team for some time now, and that they have stated their desires to do so during closed door meetings with other teams.
It is said that they are in contact with interested buyers, and if they cannot find a buyer, they will disband the team at the end of 2010.
In additional news, a new company is said to be in the running to found or buy a progaming team. According to more anonymous sources, this company is said to be doing research on the overall cost of operating a progaming team.
Interesting.. I wonder if it's Hite? They're not the team I thought of first (that'd be Woongjin), but given the last few months, it wouldn't shock me.
On August 09 2010 19:28 motbob wrote: Well, Hite is OGN. It wouldn't make any sense for OGN to want to sell.
I thought it would seeing how CJ bought OGN awhile back and having 2 teams doesn't really make sense as one of them is starting to fall apart after the scandal (I think this dealt the final blow to HITE).
I'm thinking it's Estro. With Upmagic and Sangho gone,Really and Hyvaa slumping,Action is the only one really worth mentioning and he doesn't even have a contract :/(not to mention he isn't doing too well either).
In any case, this might be a positive sign for BW in Korea that a new company is looking to jump into the mix. It says that they expect the GomTV - KeSPA negotiations to go well, so that Proleague will continue with a 10~11 season o_O
There were rumors of STX wanting to get out after the match fixing scandal, but it would still be surprising after they committed to e-sports when they spent so much money on re-signing their free agents last year.
Yeah, I'm actually more excited about there being interested buyers and a NEW company interested in either founding (!!) or acquiring a pro team than sad about a company losing interest in a promotional strategy.
This isn't all doom n gloom.
Edit: Lol, mmdmmd. I doubt that's the real photo. "OK everyone, gather up for our possible-disband-or-new-sponsor-photo, which we will then release with your images blacked out to create lots of rumors in the community! Isn't this exciting?"

If it was eSTRO, wouldn't their parent company be more likely to ditch Artosis before they considered chopping the actual team? Us foreigners would likely hear about it faster if so.
Hmm. List of teams are aren't disbanning due to income / company.. -SKT1 -CJ -OZ -MBC (MBC) -Hite (OGN?) -WeMade (2 most successful players in Wc3 and Bw (Nada+Moon))
Teams that I think could be. -eStro (team wise, although perhaps the foreigners 100% team as for as connections) -Khan (I remember January mad at Khan for their lack in practice) -Woongjin -Ace(? Probably not) TBH listing those didn't do much for me as for all we know It could be Oz.. Well, my 2 favorites are probably going to survive KT+SKT1
I don't understand why Hite would be likely at all, they're still owned and mainly sponsored by OGN. Hite only has the rights for the name. More likely candidates imo. would be Estro and WeMade seeing as they're really the only small companies sponsoring a team. Especially WeMade is probably extremely costly to run because they have teams for WC3/SC/CS and quite a few star players.

seriously uhh, my best guess is that it's estro. or hite.
According to netizens: hite - CJ now owns OGN. They'd be operating two teams. estro - ieg only came in here for broadcasting rights. Now that gretech got the rights, they have no reason to stay.

hwaseung seems to have a rather low budget for their team, so they may cut it totally
wemade is creating games and if their games arent succesful they must lower their budgets and their games are definitely not famous in europe although they did some advertising but dont know about korea
it may also be mbc. they always sold top players so their budget must also be low, additionally i feel like their studio is never full. maybe the whole channel is going to be closed
stx could also be it as they dont even have an own house and they never really won anything big. but again they seem so stable
i dont think its hite as they are owned by the bigger channel
estro may look like a poor team, but they have always been consistent even if they performed rather poorly
My bet is Hite. There's a bit of a black cloud that hangs over that club since the match fixing scandal. (really, when coaches are involved, you have to start fresh)
Both teams lost very important players thanks to the Matchfixing Scandal and are generally bad teams IMO. The only reason eStro is even winning matches is thanks to Sea.Really, one of my favorite terrans
Those are the only four that I would think have a probability of disbanding, would be surprised with any other team. Hoping everything sorts out for said team.
KT - No, they have Flash. Also they just won the title. They have a huge fanbase. Again, just won title for first time, have the best player in the game, and are run by a big company who is big into esports.
SKT1 - Again, no. They have Bisu. They have a huge fanbase. They spend more money than any other team, so I see no reason why they would randomly fold. No way.
CJ - No. Big company. Big support group. Always good. Have marketable players even if Savior screwed up
Hwaseung OZ - No. They might be a small team, but they have Jaedong. He's the first/second best player on the planet, so he's marketable. Without him, I might think they could fold, but there is 0 chance with Jaedong on board.
STX Soul - Eh, I don't think so. They still have a decent amount of good players: Calm, Hero, Kal, and they still have July/Tossgirl for the marketable standpoint. Hwasin got caught, and he was loved by the teen girls, but I don't think that's a reason for them to quit.
MBC Hero - They just had a pop star have a reality show about him learning Starcraft with their team. Also owned by a gaming channel. They have money. They love their team. No way they dump them.
Stars - I don't think so. They have Zero, Free, and Kwanro. From what I've seen, they have a big fanbase and have lots of fans show up to their fan meetings, etc. They aren't going to be bad next year, and they could make the playoffs, etc.
Samsung KHAN - lolno. They're the second/third most historic franchise behind SKT1/KT. Stork is still one of the most loved players, and I'm sure he's marketable for the company.
WeMade Fox - Eh, they could, but they just made the playoffs. They have Baby and other players that are becoming really good. They also have Nada, etc. It could be them, but it would be a shock.
Airforce ACE - No. They are already recruiting for next season with FBH, etc, so I'm pretty damn sure they're not the team folding.
Estro - One of the two teams I can see folding. They really don't have any marketable person; they aren't a huge team; they really don't look like they'll be able to compete next season. Those three things make me think that they could get dumped.
hite SPARKYZ - The lead team, obviously. Three of their best players got kicked out forever. Their most marketable player, and captain, filed for FA in Leta. After those four, they basically have NOTHING. If Leta left, they would be worse than Airforce ACE next season. Even with Leta, they'll suck. Also, with OGN/CJ in cahoots, they aren't as important as they once were to OGN.

Because it's easier speculating what team is getting axed instead what random company is gonna make a team.
For all we know, hite might disband, and then a new company will come up, swoop those left from Sparkyz/some other Free Agents, and make a brand new team.
Yeah yeah, im aware that the former allows us to guess and get involved but with all the hype about SC2 taking over, BW being dead, etc, etc. but the latter means we have a company interested in making a new team. In addition to this, the teams likely to disband are not doing so (seems to me) because of SC2 but because of the betting scandal.

Yes, but according to FOMOS, 30,000 is the second worst showing in history.
Which brings up the question...what is the final's TV ratings?
Heaven knows what company would be interested in taking over a starcraft team. It's too difficult to guess as the 12 sponsors cover a wide spectrum of businesses. The chance that Korean Air would sponsor one is small, so don't get hyped over it.

its not about the performance, its about the companies behind the teams
I'd think that KT and SKT are not possible here, due to levels of achievement + hugeness (and industry) of sponsor. ACE has talked about disbanding before, but obviously wouldn't be in the discussion.
Most likely:
hite would be the clear #1 choice to sell/disband/rebrand, based on performance (disappointing) and losing 2/3 of their team to the scandal. However, they're owned by OGN, making this marginally less likely.
Estro is the next candidate: they've done terribly most of the time, have no real starleague threats, and lost UpMagic (and probably SangHo). On the other hand, they've got great uniforms, and their sponsor is invested in the industry.
Somewhat likely:
STX SouL: They're coming off their best season to date in recent play, with Kal and Calm repeatedly going deep(ish) in Starleagues, so performance-wise there's little to complain about, except that a team this old doesn't have gold yet. On the other hand, STX has nothing to do with the gaming industry, so that makes them a prime candidate for a rebranding.
Woongjin Stars: Another good team that's disappointing in actual accomplishments, with a sponsor not intimately involved in the market. free and ZerO have of course both been good, and Kwanro ditto, but their inability to actually win as a team makes them a candidate to trade sponsors... again.
Possibly in the mix:
CJ I think might be in the discussion... which is silly, kind of, as they've had a nice run and sport a shiny new Starleague winner now. But with the coach leaving, and some shadow still hanging over the team from sAviOr's departure, it's possible.
Samsung KHAN is coming off a bad season, and at this point their only legitimate threat is Stork. January seemed to have lost her touch the beginning of the season, but then they did get really close to making playoffs anyway.
Almost certainly not:
MBCGame HERO. They've been much worse than this before, they've been really active in Korean pop culture scene, they made playoffs, Light and Sea are playing well, the magic coach has got them doing great.
WeMade Fox. They're coming off a great season; They have a roster of starleague-caliber players; they haven't been this good in years; Nada. I don't see them going anywhere.
Wild Card:
Hwaseung OZ. It's unclear to me exactly how the sponsor is involved with the industry; they have one of the best players, but other than that pretty much nothing; the team didn't make playoffs. Could be anything.
On August 09 2010 19:28 motbob wrote: Well, Hite is OGN. It wouldn't make any sense for OGN to want to sell.
Didn't OGN sell SPARKYZ to Hite? So OGN no longer in control, and Hite is likely feeling buyers remorse, considering Hite went from decent ( 4th Place) —> last place + half the team matchfixing.
hite only has 6 left players who have even won a televised game:
Britney P 1986 pts - HoGiL Z 2037 pts 2102 pts Horang2 ] P 2139 pts 2153 pts Leta () T 2213 pts 2263 pts PuMa T 2025 pts 2069 pts SeCret P 1960 pts - Tazza P 1910 pts -
And only Leta and Horang2 have winning records.
No trading opportunity (expect Leta lol) And considering Leta is now a Free Agent there is no reason for him to stay.
Obviously Hite is partly to blame for insisting their players drink Hite Beer before every match (and before every phone call to sAviOr ) but really, they need to sell.
I don't think the team will disband - the wording of the article is eerily similar to news around the time of Pantech EX -> WeMade Fox. It'll be interesting to see who the new sponsor is.

The fuck? SC isn't going anywhere soon. Wouldn't make sense, they still have pros, a sizable audience, a ton of established leagues, airtime, and most of all income. Why would any company currently broadcasting or owning or profiting in any way from Sc1 want to switch over to Sc2 where there are no established leagues or any guarantee of a good income? Same with pros. Why would they switch over to a game that hasn't even had its first television broadcast yet when they could play BW, which is extremely well established

There's no way Ace could "sell" their team, and it's government owned so you can rule Ace out. Khan is doing well, and they're backed by a profitable company. I would bet on either Hite because of the scandal, or or Woongjin. Estro has been the bottom of the bucket forever, nothing has changed.

Anyways, my 2cents goes towards eStro, who's the only team (other than ACE) on proleague not to be sponsored by a major corporation. Sure, hite might be most likely, but they shouldn't be a issue because OGN can just pick-up the team again.
I agree that it will likely be either Hite or Estro.
I'd be sad for Really if it ends up being Estro. He looks very depressed already (only second to Canata), and having his career put on hold would make him feel worse.
If they've been considering it for some time, my money would be on eSTRO, who is pretty much ACE without the lack of practice time and oldschools. They may have gotten bored of being awful and decided to just quit.
Maybe it is Estro. I didn't even know which company was sponsoring the team (branding failure) and had to look it up to find out.
And which team was it that had to be supported by Kespa for awhile between sponsors? For some reason I had an impression that it was Estro, but now I'm not so sure about things.
either hite or estro obviously imho. after the scandal, hite´s reputation is down and they literally have only 4 players left which are proleague-material (leta, horang2, hogil, puma) of which only 1 is actually a decent player with any kind of marketing value.
estro has been horrible forever, but their involvement in the scandal might have been the straw that broke the camel´s back. (is this correct? because this proverb is completely different in german XD") in particular as the company backing them up is rather small and the team has no real starpower and no real future.
but the really interesting question to me is who will pick up leta/really. for example, imagine woonjing with a terran of leta´s or really´s caliber.... leta, zero, free, kwanro. ridiculous lineup....

yeah its correct haha
but what about action? i imagine someone is gonna want him
I definitely think its either eStro or Sparkyz, but definitely leaning towards Sparkyz. With everything that has happened to Sparkyz: match-fixing scandal, no coach, no players, 1 star who just became a FA (Leta). If I were HITE/OGN I wouldn't keep the team without Leta, and at the same time I may not want to pay Leta just to keep a team running. Its not an issue of StarCraft dying at all, but an issue of a franchise failing so theres no need to keep it. If anything OGN could become a non-title sponsor to another team, most likely CJ if this were to happen.
Although I believe eStro is a possibility, I feel like its a much slimmer possibility. For a long time eStro was the bottom of the pro team hierarchy but recently have shown they are capable and have some great and talented players in: Action, hyvaa, Really, and Classic. Although, it would definitely be interesting to see the likes of Action, hyvaa, Really, and Classic on another team.
One thing I would like to suggest as a possibility, just because I think it'd be fucking awesome if it happened, is the pro-team being bought out by an existing pro-team sponsor. In essence merging the two teams, and the first ever StarCraft Pro-Team Merger. For example, what if Woongjin were to just straight up buy-out HITE, keep Leta, PuMa, HoGiL, Horang2, and then they have free, MVP, ZerO, Kwanro, and SoulKey on top of that. Woongjin would then have a Terran, Protoss, AND Zerg line. That'd be pretty bad ass to see.
I would love for it to be Hwaseung. That way we'll see a Lebron like announcement with JD picking his new team. JD to Khan? SKT? KT? Holy shit can you imagine how hard any of those teams would dominate and how hard JD would dominate with an all star cast around him. JD+Flash combo makes me drool.

IEG owns them, and bought them in order to buy broadcast licenses. Their core business is buying broadcast licenses for sports - boxing, soccer, baseball etc etc. They bought the proleague/msl licenses for a large sum of cash and then didn't do anything with them (i suppose there were plans on SC4ALL but well....yea). The big korean corporation was one of the final candidates to buy Stars when Hanbit sold them back in 2008, but they didn't get it, Woongjin did. The company now wants to buy the team from this "Mysterious company" that is looking to sell it (from the OP of this thread).
Another hint to the big korean corporation who is going to buy the team is that they also run a professional sports team. That's about all the hints we have. We have no idea who is gonna sell the team yet.

Another hint to the company who is going to buy the team is that they also run a professional sports team. That's about all the hints we have.
But no it's not Stars stop spreading things please ;;

EDIT: Changed the wording so it doesnt create any more confusion
If we look at the professional leagues in Korea and establish those most likely to enter the e-Sports scene, I think we can narrow the mysterious companies down to;
I'Park, POSCO, Hyundai, Doosan, LG, Lotte
and then from there my guesses are
I'Park (Have the e-Sports stadium in their mall) Hyundai (one of the largest chaebols in Korea, up with Samsung, KT and SKT) Doosan (as above) LG (I think they should have entered ages ago) Lotte (Confectionary company linking with the younger generation)
hmm, if we get 3000 of us TLers to give 10 bucks a month for 10 months of the year, that's a solid $300,000 to fund the Team Liquid Horses Wild SC team. We'd all own a very small fraction of the company and they would win all the time. We'd be millionaires!
Hope it goes well, would be a shame to see gamers without a team. Also if its Sparkyz to be honest i'd rather they keep Leta and rebuild. It just seems a shame for a team to lose their ACE and most recognized player that gets them their fans in the first place.

Lol that'd be pretty hilarious actually. It's like paying for WoW but less, and owning part of a pro gaming team at the same time for kicks and giggles.
I am sure STX would accept Really with open arms. Action should find an employer easily.
No idea about the rest of Estro. Flying, Classic and Hyvaa should make good practice partners though.
An ideal situation is that the unnamed company buys Stars and merge it with Estro's top players when Estro disbands. The result is a very competitive team.

$300,000 doesn't even cover their salaries. There's also food, lodging, maids, and transportation.

Yea wtf, boxer and those guys didnt have salaries. Their salary is that they get to live for free playing starcraft, then they pay us back by winning tournaments. There has to be some _in_ before some out.
Maids? Yea fuckin right. 300 grand is more than enough to have a small team a year. There is no way rent would be more than 100,000 dollars for a pretty ballin place with amenities, the scrubby players cook the food and do that banal shit. 7 players and a coach (maybe!) that's 100,000 for food a year, then 100,000 for whatever stuff you can think of.

Well you pretty much just took the salary of the top paid players, who are/were at the time the salary was disclosed pretty much the best players around.
Thats like saying you cant run an NBA team on $24 Million because thats what Kobe alone gets paid. Timberwolves run on like 30 million total payroll.
(i know its a bump, but thought it'd be better to post here than make a new thread)
Confirmed to be eStro. They closed down the dormitory and practice house last month. All of the players have had their contracts terminated and have returned home.
These players are just going to retire? No plans on signing with other teams?
Truly a depressing day. I fucking loved eSTRO so much because of Really and lately Action (ZvT defiler control...). I really hope something can be done about this.
Action, Really, Hyvaa and Flying should find new teams quickly. KT could use one of, or both of, Action and Hyvaa. Another Zerg wouldn't hurt for Wemade or MBC, either. STX and Woongjin should be fighting it out for Really, and Hwaseung would be foolish to pass on Flying if the opportunity is there.
The real people who suffer from this are the b-teamers. Everyone's cutting b-teamers and now here's another bunch who'll never get anywhere. eStro literally drafted a protoss three weeks ago and now he's cut loose.
Very unfortunate for estro but it is expected. They really have no true star players to keep the fans and sponsors interested, plus they have been consistently on the bottom of the pro league ranking for years. Action( the next ggplay) and really( marco beast) should find a home very soon. Don't know about others player like hyaa but good luck them in the future.
the poor poor team that almost could. I was rooting for them so hard to make the playoffs last season. 1st they lost upmagic, then they lost their team
><<<< QQQQQ I was always afraid of such a day, when a team would disband. Watching the proleague, the amount of ppl sitting there always seems to get less and less every day, and I always fear for the worst... What's you guys' views on the current situation of E-sports in korea? is it just me or is it shrinking...
I find it likely that the better members of eSTRO (read: Action, Really) are going to other teams. I can see MBC signing Action and Really finding a new home with Khan. I'm confident at least Action won't retire - he was fairly new and showed incredible promise.
I'm not really surprised. Estro never really had a sponsor. IEG owns them and they make their money reselling proleague broadcasting rights. But Estro was never actually advertising for a company.
Awww this totally blows. T1 had a chance to pick up a sick management zerg and they buy the cheesiest zerg in the world... Really anywhere sounds good actually
Didn't we have rumors that some company would buy/create a team? Right now would be a great time to confirm that rumor. eStro. One of my favorite teams with one of my favorite current zergs.

Maybe Sparkyz can start getting their team back in form, just take like everyone from eStro, cause Sparkyz is still basically just Leta...
It's really disappointing to see eStro disband, they were definitely doing better this past season compared to a couple of seasons ago... also, not sure if it's relevant, but did it have anything to do with Hwanni interviewing/translating/whatever for Upmagic? Also, what ever happened to Hwanni's interview?

SKT better stay the fuck away from Action, and Action should also steer clear if he wants his career to thrive. Kwanro may find a home with Hyuk & co., but SKT isn't going to help an up-and-coming Zerg with massive potential.
Nooo eSTRO... I enjoyed watching them go from a proleague whipping boy to having a solid roster and always thought that the team had a lot of heart. Any proteam disbanding would be a tragedy, I hope things work out in the month to come...

It has everything to do with Estro's sponsor being a company interested in purchasing broadcast rights, which Gretech has done recently and therefore IEF has less pertinent business since they don't run too heavily on advertising, I think.

A team like eSTRO without good players is the best environment for someone like Action. hite might be a decent choice. One of the eSTRO terrans should go to Stars. If not Really, then they can try to train Classic.

I'd actually like at least one of them to go to STX (not that the tag would give it away or anything). STX is in dire need of a good T, If cuteangel is the best T on the team. Classic or Really would be huge. Really has said in an interview that he feels unsure about his TvZ, and that seems a perfect place for Calm to help him. After all, even if he's bad skill wise ATM, his knowledge of ZvT could be what elevates Really to the STX ACE.

I don't understand. Wouldn't a team like skt t1 be awesome for a great zerg like action to practise with? But then again T1 already has a great line up and with action they would be invincible.
roflmao Action would have no problem w/ playtime on SKT hahaha, he outclasses all the other by Zergs by far, altho then I'd be worried Hyuk/s2 wouldn't get any playtime at all :\ unless iloveoov gets his wish and has PL changed to a Bo7 format lol.

He wouldn't get play time because there's too many other players that need his spot. In my opinion, a team like Stars or CJ is a good learning environment, with a lot of players but a chance to actually get to play. Unless SKT wants to play their zergs or Canata for practice, a new player won't have a chance to play outside of the practice house. Action is slightly better than Hyuk and about the same as Kwanro. He'd get some playtime, but he'd still be #4-5 on his team.
Sad news, but oh well. I hope the players find a place to go or something D:
I'm actually unsure that any team currently has the financial resources to take in any of eSTRO's top caliber players. Of course, what might end up happening is that a player will agree to a reduced contract... Ehhhhh :/

Well theres still GSL .... Kinda sad I really liked Action.. and Hwanni of course... .
My interest in estro took a big hit after the betting scandal (upmagic t_t), and I stopped watching them completely after sc2 beta, but this still sucks.
oh wow this isn't good, I really hope they find a sponsor. If not then I'm sure they'll find a good home in other teams. I've been rooting for eSTRO since I started watching SC.
W/e, estro was a terrible team. don't understand how you can miss the playoffs that badly with people like Action, really, flying, and classic (who had an awesome run). Obviously the management isn't up to par.

I think the biggest problem was something to do with coaching. Classic, for example, is a great player who started to have trouble performing. I remember watching one game in particular where he didn't know what he was doing for the first half, and then in the second half he lost like, a single marine. The team had talent but it seemed to be raw talent. There were some obvious confidence issues.
On September 18 2010 02:39 dcberkeley wrote: SKT should've signed Action, I think he's better overall than Kwanro
It's funny to think how Kwanro and Action are the complete opposites. Action has awesome late game while Kwanro never wins unless he gets a significant advantage early on.
If eStro disbands, then I imagine that there will be a lot of interests in Really and Action. I think that SKT should've waited for someone like Action, because he would've suited SKT much better than Kwanro >.<
Well eSTRO have been the worst team (bar ACE, but they aren't a full-time team anyway) for years, with some of their players only occasionally showing sparks of brilliance. Them disbanding have been long overdue considering their results.
for about a year i've had a fantasy of boxer taking over estro and turning it around to be a number one team, i don't think that idea would be too popular here though.
This is so damn depressing, eStro, even just on the merit of being foreigner friendly, is a team I wholeheartedly support and It'd be the saddest event since the match fixing scandal was revealed. :|
I don't think eStro is as unattractive a purchase as most would make it out to be. I may be looking too far into it but sponsorship in eSports is not about monetary returns but rather about exsposure and getting good PR. If some company were to fly in and come to eStro's rescue, not only does it save eStro but it also inspires confidence in the progression of BW eSports. This will make all BW fans regardless of team affiliation super happy and supportive of "mystery company" and will thus be good investment.
Sigh... not surprised at all. First, eSTRO's Counter-Strike 1.6 team going to WeMadeFOX and then the match fixing scandal with UpMagiC and the accused SangHo. eSTRO is my favorite team because of players like UpMagiC, Action, Sea. Really, SangHo, etc. It sucks for the rest of the players. Where is Hwanni btw? He hasn't been showing up in Artosis' videos lately.
-IEG gave up the team in the beginning of August to KeSPA, who took over all organization/management/fees. -In early August, the rent for the dorms/practice rooms was used up, so all the players returned home at that point. -All of the players' contracts ended in August, and after remaining fees/etc. were sorted out, all the team members are officially no longer part of eSTRO for now -Because SPL 10-11 is beginning in October, if eSTRO doesnt find a buyer by the end of the month, they're basically going to be disbanded, and all the players can be bought up by other teams.
Poor guys. I hope it will work out for them. The chances that a company will buy estro are probably very small so I hope most of them will find a place in some other progaming team.
Hope Really goes to KHAN, sucks to see Jangbi and Stork in such an uninspired team. Also sad that SDM's work is (most likely) being permanently disbanded. What an odd country S.Korea seems like at times :o

Amen. Turn disappeared T.T.
Any word on what this means for Hwanni and Artosis videos? I thought they were both sponsored by the same people??
Very weird. I still hope there is a way for what's left of the team to become a new team, and not be scattered among other teams, or even lost for progaming. Always liked their players and was close to becoming a team supporter.
