Some companies see a great model here - they can band together to offer a "currency" that is much more useful and flexible than single-store gift cards, but still gets users locked-in to their little club of stores. It could theoretically help small stores band together act as a unit to compete better with large chains, but in practice I suspect that it's more useful as a tool for established businesses to apply just a bit more pressure on little guys, :-/ (This is similar to "points" systems offered on everything from rewards credit cards to shoppers' clubs . . . you get rewards that are money-like but have limited scope of applicability [and if possible, the offering company would like to have them expire and make them non-transferable].)
