Poll: Does it bother you if someone leaves without a "GG" and is it BM? (Vote): YES IT'S SO BM! OMG YOU SHOULD BE BURNED! (Vote): It's not BM, but it bothers me.,, (Vote): I guess it's BM, but I really don't care enough to be offended. (Vote): What's the problem?
So a funny thing happened to me for the first time the other day. I decided to play a game online after taking a break and upon losing the game, I left without typing "GG". I subsequently received several messages telling me that I was bad mannered and that I should grow up or something along those lines.
The thing is leaving without typing, "GG" is pretty normal for me and it's something I've pretty much been doing since the game first came out. I suppose I just always figured that the people I play for the most part are totally random people who I don't say anything else to anyway so I always just left and moved onto the next game, never really getting into the whole "GG" thing that eventually developed and I suppose became somewhat standard online before leaving a game. Anyway, I never really thought a whole lot about it until this particular occasion because until now nobody has taken enough offense to contact me after a game about it so it just got me a bit curious as to how much it bothered other people and since I had a little extra time on my hands, I decided to waste my time making a stupid poll about it.
What do you think and why?
|
I hate it more when people say "GG" for me. Thats more BM -_-
|
meh better to go on secondary account and own him again, if your opponent not saying GG really pisses you off
|
where is the, No, it isnt bm option?
|
i type gg before my opponent when i won against something cheesy

Meh.. I guess the last option would be the closest to that..

I only say gg if it's vs a name I recognize and it's not a friend who knows I don't usually gg. Alternatively I do it if it's in a tournament or if I'm streaming live.
Doesn't bother me if my opponent leaves without saying "gg" and I don't consider it bm.\ I was hoping with the release of SC2 this silly habit would go away, but it seems to have not
|
Where's the "i like it cos i like cos it usually means i frustrated my opponent" option? XD
|
i especially hate people who cheese then dont gg back when you gg. sometimes, i like to force them to say gg back. oh yeah and i think that offensive gg's are awsome. they are legit against someone trying to hide the farm against you
|
Leaving without gg'ing is bad mannered by definition. That's one of the ways people define bad mannered.
As to whether opponents' not gg'ing bothers me, it does not. I think it's a nicer way to finalize the game so it should be done. However, I'm not bothered in any way if someone just leaves.
|
I just get a little chuckle knowing that my play inspired nerd rage

This. I find it hilarious if someone leaves without GG'ing because it means I had to have annoyed them.

Bad mannered I guess, but if you cheese then it is understandable.

"GG" is like an official surrender, so I dont think it is a silly habit, cause it lets you know when you won. Also it makes korean SC commentating better when they yell "GG"

i usually gg if it's a good game win or lose. gging at every game makes it meaningless

I think it's safe to say that you know you've won when your opponent leaves the game.. I do agree about the broadcasting, though.
|
I almost always gg unless I'm really annoyed or my opponent is bm in which case I liftoff, fly to corners and browse TL for a bit.
|
i enjoy illiciting "wow how did i lose to you, you piece of trash" out of them as a formal surrender rather than gg.
|
I don't mind people not gging just because I find it funny.
Sometiems I do leave without GGing mostly when I'm very pissed at how bad I played
|
i always say "faggot", especially if it's P. it's a bad habit but i can't seem to change it

Not because I'm offended, just because it puzzles me why you'd deliberately ignore it. I mean, it's like if someone says "hello" in some everyday situation and you ignore them, but keep on doing whatever it was that clearly involved them.

Calling "GG" a silly habbit at the end of the game is like saying that shaking hands across the net in tennis is a silly habbit.... its pure sportsmanship and theres no question that its bad mannered not to do it. Hence why i actually enjoy when people dont do it, it means ive pissed them off to the point where they didnt they dont want to acknowledge that they lost the game

I don't know about BM or not, but I sure think it seems like the nicer thing to do. At the very least, it sends a friendly message. I remember the first time I got on Bnet and how amazed I was that everyone was so friendly and said "gg" after a game.
|
If you lose a sporting event, do you have to go to them and say "gg"? Saying "gg" might be a mannered thing to do, but the absence of a "gg" doesn't necessarily mean it's bad mannered; bad mannered would be calling your opponent a faggot before you left... I have no issue with people not saying "gg" in ladder games, there's just not much point to it and I don't want them to feel like it was a "good game": hopefully my games are 1 sided in my favor, thus not a good game from their perspective.
|
I always GG even if I feel like they won through something gay (4 pool) but it's not a big deal if they don't.
|
It doesn't bother me when someone leaves without gging. It does bother me when someone doesn't gg back.
|
If you played when the game was relatively new then you remember that nobody gged and it was mildly annoying when someone left the game before you had a chance to destroy all their buildings. But back then people played for fun and not to be anal e-celebrities I guess.
I don't particularly care if my opponent thinks I played a good game or not. But I don't assume he is a jerk if he didn't TELL me I played a good game. I think messaging someone to complain about them not saying gg is a bigger display of bad manners, to be honest. How anal do you have to be to do that?
|
I think it's a little bit pathetic when people scream BM if I don't type out. Some people just want an excuse to cock slap you with their e-penis, as it were. Sometimes we'll be in the channel we met in after the game and before I can even say "gogo re? ^^" the person is spamming LOL UMAD BM BM NOOB TROLLFACE LOL so when we regame I switch to Protoss, build a pylon in his worker line and say "is that manner enough for you?" then disc hack his dumb ass.
|
I couldn't care any less about that, i like it. However i HATE when someone wont leave and they hide buildings and turtle like hell in their new 1 base no unit defense. That pisses me off.
But to answer the real question, i don't care, but i GG so i don't get flamed.

Yeah, a lot of the time you do. You say "good game" and you shake their hand. If you watched the olympics you would have seen it a million times.
But not all games are sports. If some kid on the ICCUP ladder thinks he is an athlete at C- then he needs to spend some time in the real outdoors as opposed to the e-outdoors.

I only say GG before I win a game.
|
I don't gg unless I actually thought it was a good game... I still say something indicative of surrender otherwise but it's usually along the lines of "well, shit"

I don't mind people leaving without typing gg. I mean, they lost, they're probably sad, I don't expect them to be all happily congratulating me on my win =P. I do find it BM when someone types GG for me though. I usually type gg at the end, but at the start of the game I'm too lazy to do the whole "gl hf" ritual so it's always fun for me when the game starts with my opponent going "gl hf bro, how you doing today" and ends with him name-calling me before he quits^^;. There's more BM things than saying nothing

I don't mind people about gging, becouse there is no rule about it for other than progamers.
edit: haha at the "high five" ;D
|
LOLOL "High Five" xD Best post of this thread... xD. If people don't gg its normally cause they lose... and if they lose I can't exactly blame them for not saying gg cause I'm pretty sure the majority of people like winning... those who don't gg are just venting of rage b/c they did something stupid or they know they could've won I guess. On the other hand, if you are a bad player and someone tells you that... thats really offensive to me (happened to me when I first started playing ICCup for fun... I stopped playing SC till more friends joined the game after that...)
|
even if you think it wasnt a good game you should always gg before you leave, it's just how the SC culture is. as people said it's just like shaking hands at the end of other sport matches.
i always sorta find people who dont gg back to be more dickish though lol (as compared to people who leave 1st without gging)
worst iccup manners to me are:
people who change their race at the last second to try to get you to miss their race
people who ask from? (EVEN THOUGH ICCUP TELLS YOU WHERE IM FROM NOW) or other stuff and then usually do it while cheesing (its actually really funny because i always 9drone scout or something when my opponent is talkative because i expect cheese lol)
asking for re and then changing race last second and then i dont notice because i wasnt expecting it. ok this only happened once but fuck that guy
|
I normally gg but I don't give a fuck regardless, and voted that I don't care enough ...
it's stupid I already know I played good ..... I won
|
sometimes im thinking over the game and wat i did wrong and i forget to call GG >.< but no it doesnt really bother me if they dont say gg, and im pretty sure 'hf' means 'have fun'
|
I think it's considered Good manners to GM, but I don't think it's bad manners to not say it. I think it's ridiculous for it to be mandatory or expected.
My personal opinion is that it's a compliment. It's telling your opponent he was a worth opponent and his victory was not only earned, but entertaining.
To me to say it's BM is to say that if your an attractive woman that it's rude for a male to not compliment you, but this is just my personal opinion, and I get kinda annoyed w/ all the hype over such nonsense.
|
I'll remember all of your stupid comments the next time one of you thinks that one of your niche colloquialisms applies to the world at large and precludes all other interpretations.
Which is to say, it JUST HAPPENED.
(Why was the thread locked, by the way?)
|
i receive whispers about it too and wonder if these people whisper everyone that leaves without a gg. ... cause most people do.
|
If I play a really good, interesting, long, fun game, I might say GG.
I don't say GG if it's a bad game because
1. I can't be effed 2. Don't feel like being insincere just to appease peoples idea of manners
|
i used to GG just because i did it tons of time until it became automatic, but i dont think not saying gg is enough to overreact with "BM!!!" who cares, its the internetz
|
when people don't say gg it makes me think they rage quit, and thus makes me feel that much better about myself
|
I never GG on iccup unless I'm playing a friend or something..I always GG on BNET though..Iccup brings out the worst in me.
I don't care if people leave without gg'ing, because I do it all the time.
|
I fracking hate when someone offensive GGs me, triggers lift my buildings and float away mode.
|
It's BM, which is fine in a non-professional/non-tournament setting imo. Multiplayer games would be boring if everyone online were all perfectly mannered.
|
To be completely honest I rage quit a lot. Its just habit.
Though I personally enjoy it when my opponent rage quits as I know I just made some nerd angry.
I definitely GG if it was a really good game though .
|
I gg all the time and alt+q+q as quickly as possible instead of nerdraging in a bad game. I'd still call it a ragequit because right after I'll shout something like "what the fuck?!" right after.
But I don't really mind if people don't gg when they lose, unless it's in a tourney or "serious" match.

I think your IP address should be banned for not saying gg. We as starcraft players need to rise up against these scumbags who think that they can just quit the game after they got there asses whopped and not just say "gg". It really brings my piss to a boil sometimes...

I'll always type GG if I feel I played my best or the opponent played great. Otherwise I'll BM, sometimes I'll just type bg and leave.

It feels like an insult to me since most people only don't GG when they're annoyed for whatever reason. Since I don't know about the GG habits of the people I fight, it bothers me a little when they don't gg cuz I just assume they're pissed off.
|
Personally, I'm of the opinion that it's polite to say "gg" if it actually *was* a good game... but not all games are good. If the game ended in 8 minutes to cheese or a poorly defended rush or whatever, I have no problem with opponents who don't say "gg", and feel little obligation to do so myself. But if it actually *was* a good game, it does seem polite to acknowledge that fact.
|

Why should people be required to say "GG" if they dont actually think it was a good game? You lose the meaning of the phrase and it just becomes robotic. I'm really not sure how its bad mannered or how it could even bother someone.

I think gg'ing has become common Starcraft etiquette. I see it as the respectful handshake after a match. That being said however, I don't get upset when people don't say it. I figure they're either raging (which I agree makes me feel like I've accomplished something) or not familiar with the Starcraft scene.
It's like someone signing off on aim mid-conversation. Kind of an "oh....ok" feeling.
And yes I know the concept of "internet etiquette" is blasphemy. All I have to say to that is

I would say GG to a stranger who gave me a cookie because I would have said it before I bit into it and found out it sucked.
I would say GG regardless though because the stranger may shoot me if I don't say GG for the free cookie.

Most of the people I play leave without gg. When someone types it in I get stumped. I even leave a lot without typing gg. Mostly because my gameplay is still random at best.
|
i like to gg after i finish in sex
i hate when she gg's for me
she is very bm
|
I always say gg after a game, regardless of how poorly I played, what cheese my opponent used, or how angry I am that they used it. It's just a measure of control. The Starcraft scene has developed the gg to the point where not saying it is an anomaly, so I will type out gg at the end of a game.
That being said, I always give my opponents the benefit of the doubt if they do not gg. Just because they play Starcraft does not mean that they are familiar with the place the gg holds in the Starcraft scene. I consider it BM, but I realize that my opponent may not mean any BM by it.
gg'ing for your opponent is ridiculously BM and there is no excuse for it.

it's not bm, but still, it would be nice to gg.
Unless I pull off a Flash and rape some Zerg's base with 30 +3 attack siege tanks and their 20+ ultras all melt.
|
Sometimes I don't say GG because I'm raging due to stupid mistakes or weird Allin shenanigans. If I got outplayed I'll say GG and move on.
|
I usually type 'gg' before I leave but I also press the keys to exit out of the game really fast too so I don't even see that it registered.
With that said though, sometimes if I am playing vs someone who I know I am much better than, but I lose to them...I won't type 'gg' but that's because I am upset with myself moreso than any form of badmanner towards the guy that just beat me.
An example is when I am beating a terran but he does a medivac drop on my base while my army is defending/killing his expos and I am totally controlling the map etc. etc. but then I decide to counter him rather than kill the harrassing units and my army is killed by his defenses and I feel like a retarded noob so I just leave and take a break for a bit by posting on these forums. (This just happened to me about 20 minutes ago)
|
I hate when:
1) People say GG and then rebuild their base in another starting location...
2) Offensive GGs. I love when people think they won and say gg? Then I rape their face with my hidden army and they leave.
|
I only gg when the game was actually good.

It's just showing a bit of respect for their victory. Starcraft is a game of skill, if someone outplays you they deserve recognition. So when people don't say GG to me I feel like they're not acknowledging my victory, as if they think I got lucky or something rather than outplaying them. For the same reason I have never not GGed, even to the lamest cheeses.
|
I never gg and don't consider it BM. Also, I don't get why people consider it rage quit. Alt-q-q without gg is like "OK, I've lost, let's not waste time anymore, enjoy your nice victory screen". I also hate these "hi where u from?" in the beginning of the game, did you join the game to play or chat? Go chat elsewhere. If there was an option to turn ingame chat off, I would definitely use it.
If there's something to discuss about how great the game was, it can be discussed after the game.

i only "gg" when i lose if it was actually a "good game" ... something almost never happen when i lose :-)

There is. Its called "/ignore <player>" though this should be automatic without typing players name.
Personally I have IRC where I chat a lot and chatting in-game doesn't sound interesting at all. SC is for gaming, not for chat. You can even type "gl hf" in the game lobby (as many spam there).
7 out of 10 games my opponent leaves without typing "gg". Do I care? no.
|
i only gg if the game was actually good (fun) or if its vs a friend (because, well, most of my friends subscribe to the "gg religion" and i dont wanna bother explaining all of this to them)
i will most definitely not say gg if the game was horrible, for example if one of my units glitched and this allowed your cheese rush to work, or i mis-read your build and lost very early or something of that nature
i will also not gg to most people who were assholes up until that point, because i just wont bother, and also because if its a korean he will (usually) be pissed off and it will be funny seeing his self-righteousness display on the channel
call it nerd rage if you will, but i actually think its more stupid to just force yourself to say "gg" when you know it means nothing to you and especially when you know the game sucked, for the sole reason that other people do it
|
I love when people leave without GG that just makes me lol since it means they got mad :p
|
It's like cashiers wishing you a good day. Or waitresses smiling at you. I like it. A bit of fakeness to let the world appear friendly and civilized.
Alternatively, I say it to show my respect to my opponent, whether I lost or won.
Handshaking in chess, hugging in MMA?
|
I can get pissed of when someone wins and doesn't reply to my gg but usually not enough to act on it in any way. When I win I don't care at all.

you right starbrift .
and just a fact for fun , after win over 25 korean this season , only 2-3 of them have say gg . 5-6 of them insulted me and the rest just leaved the game .

I don't really care....I got the win anyway so why bother? Right? Maybe the person is pissed on his loss or maybe his g key is broken (which sucks for protoss)..
plus, we've all missed out on typing gg at least once, right? I remember forgetting to do that because I was pissed...

I always gg, for I believe in good sportsmanship. It is a nice gesture that do not require a lot of effort.
|
I can't type gg, because I always rage when I lose. I always think it's me who played bad, and not my opponent making a great game, so why would I gg.
|
I gg most of the time but i never say gg if i get allined or some wierd cheese or if i fuck up badly. Mostly when I think that the game is not "good".
I never get bothered when someone is not saying gg but when some guy start raging for w/e reason then i laugh so hard that gives me so much pleasure :D

"YES IT'S SO BM! OMG YOU SHOULD BE BURNED!"
should be
"yes, it's bm. Opponent not a good sportsman" or sth like that. I voted this but I don't like the sarcastic tone

That would only apply if they think like you though.
I always thought it stood for good game... people saw GG and it caught on as compulsary for many and lost its context. You type it if you feel like and actually had a good game/ respect for the effort your opponent put in. There is no "this must be said at the end", It's a computer game over the internet played for fun. If i don't type GG at the end its because i don't feel like it and move onto the next game or whatever i'm going to do, not because im raging inside for losing, i simply don't care enough (which im probably in the minority for ). I don't expect my opponent to say it but might reciprocate if one is thrown my way.

I'm not easily offended. But you should just say gg when you lose. I've done it for so many years that I just do it by reflex. Sometimes in teamgames I fuck up since it has ac ect.
|
I always say gg. I even say GG if someone insults me and then they win. I've always felt it was a social construct to acknowledge the other player's effort regardless of the quality of the match. If I want to emphasize how good a game it was I'll say gg and comment or say GG and leave. I'm actually surprised by how many people do not use it and/or view it as an appraisal of the match.
|
I write GG if the game was good. I hate when people write gg before me, then I usually dont leave (in fact if I dont leave it's because I believe I can win - and sometimes it happens lol).
|
I just type gg when I'm about to leave, doesn't have to be a good game, it's just part of my leaving routine. If I don't gg it's because I accidentally alt+q+q before the second enter.
I know most people don't use gg like that but I don't care. I don't really care if they quit without gg either.

rofl people actually say gg because they thought it was a good game? that's not how it works. it's just a routine that has been accepted as the standard behavior. i almost always do it unless my opponent bms me or i get four pooled. it's no a big deal.
i don't care if my opponent doesn't gg (without me bming him or 4 pooling) but i do consider it bm.

And to the person saying that they gg even if the other guy was being bm, I too make a point out of gg'ing if my opponent behaves like a douchebag. Feels as a moral victory, to me at least! :D

Where's the "if it was a crappy game why would you GG"
seriously, GG stands for good game. i've played games where I fucked myself over on my own, or just played flat out horribly. maybe say "well played" or something, but it isn't exactly a good game. One that comes to mind is when I played Terran and was opening mech TvZ on medusa, and it looked like nothing could fit between the top of my depot and the water @ 11 o clock position and he just ran right in and killed me. completely my fault for not knowing this, but it sure wasn't a good game. if you want to be 'manner' and say it 100% it's up to you, but if you expect one 100% I think that's pretty lame.
|
I don't know how there is so much debate. Leaving without saying gg is the same as walking off the field or court or whatever without shaking someones hand, clear sign of disrespect. I don't get offended or anything but just like anything else I probably make a make a mental note of it.
|
I GG all the type except when I am Zerg and the following happens: 1)Bunker Rush, I simply rage quit here 2)8rax into vult runby into wraiths, I alt tab here and wait till I am eliminated.
|
I love it when they don't gg, makes me feel like I raped them and they were really trying to win so they raged.
|
I say gg 95% of the time. It's not soo much as a compliment to him, but seems to calm me down more after a loss. There is a moment right before I lose, that I start to rage inside, and typing gg and exiting the game usually subsides that small bit of rage, and allows me to move on. It's that tiny little "gg" at the end that stops me from rage quitting and going all spousal abuse on my GF LOL.
|

"GG" is like an official surrender, so I dont think it is a silly habit, cause it lets you know when you won. Also it makes korean SC commentating better when they yell "GG"[/QUOTE]
Yes, but if I play some random game against friends / at C- level on iccup, is an "official surrender" really called for? I might take things more seriously if I were better at the game, but I'm just messing around. Certainly if I were ever in some kind of tournament official match I'd do it - but there's a Surrender option in the in-game menu, and for a player like me that's plenty "official" enough most of the time.
|
What bothers me the most is when people think they're so awesome, they GG before you when they think they're winning. That's way more bm than leaving without GG
|
I say "bg" before his "gg" when he doesnt want to leave
|
i say "gg", unless the game was completely sucky.. losing to proxy, bansheerush, my own idiocy.. then i simply quit without saying anything and head off for a break since its hard for me to enjoy staying on computer after such a shitty game. I dont rage or anything, i just feel like i should do something else.. However there are some actually good games every now and then, when i bother to write "GG ".
I do feel opponent is a little bad mannered if he doesnt write anything after a decent game, it feels like i have left him frustrated with something. I feel the best if opponent comments the game after he has lost, like "haha that was some great base razing, GG "
|
i rarely write gg when i lose. sometimes i will write re? but thats about it.
|
I gg only vs my clanmates. In random pubs I don't say hi, gl, hf, gg, or anything for that matter. The only words that come out of me are "gogo". Don't care at all if the opponent does or doesn't gg himself. I just hope he wont trash talk at the end.
I completely don't care about being "gm" or having good etiquette.
|
I am a strong believer in manners and leaving without a gg or saying anything that would resemble whine or anger is unthinkable to me. There is no "cheap play", use anything to win.
But I would not message someone who leaves without a gg or bm me, it's just not worth the drama, it's not like I will succeed in converting them to good manners or something. I just make a smiley and wait for them to leave.
The problem with my philosophy is that I can respect someone who even tries to use psychology to gain an advantage through typing whatever, weird stuff, friendly stuff, questions and or/bm. It's hard for me to explain but the win is actually more important to me than manners even though I value it very highly. (and I say to "me" but I mean to say winning for anyone, a person that uses whatever means to win).
BUT, that is when the game are underway or when a set is underway. When the game or the set is done and a winner is set if you are still behaving like a child through excuses or bad mannered talk then I will have nothing to do with you, use anything and everything to win but respect the winner AND the looser that fought (be it you or your opponent).
EDIT: A big point of this is that when you are doing everything in your power to win this is respectful both to yourself and also to your opponent. He has to be able to overcome everything you throw at him and if he does this then he should be worthy of your respect -> usually by the show of manners. Also if you proove too strong he should acknowledge your power -> usually by the show of manners.
I get really disheartened by seeing all the replies in this thread that say "Don't be so serious" because if it's one thing that should be taken seriously it is the concious drive to improve your game and win no matter what, to me it's comparable to any similar activity as the pursuit to become a great artist, musician, athlete, chess player, CEO, etcetera and should be respected as such.
|
so many people in this thread take the literal meaning of gg too seriously lol
also i only say bg when i play vs my friend lian lian who never ggs until he has no units left and only a few floating buildings usually lol
sometimes i just offensive gg + leave the game 1st lol

I only gg to cheese, win or lose, if it was a particularly clever cheese. I'm often pretty BM to cheese and make an ass out of myself.
I always GG in tournaments, no matter what.

I'll only gg if I lost to something that impressed me. Also, its quite amusing to see so many people thinking that if I leave a game w/o typing gg im probably nerd raging, while in fact I couldnt care less and thats why I cant be arsed to acknowledge your generic win.
|
typing gg litterally takes about 1 second tops and it shows respect to your opponent, makes him happy and makes the world a better place. you're practically going out of your way NOT to gg, especially because you know you should.
|
ya, i dont particularly find leaving without GG as bm as someone 'offensively' gg'ing you, like killing ur expo in TvP and having seiged up around ur natural or something and being like saying gg for you.. which is just like.. infuriating. but ya, like the option says "i dont see a problem w/ it, i do it all the time". mostly because i obviously don't feel as though it was a gg, because i lost.. =[ I mean sometimes if I feel that I played my best and was still bested.. then ya, i'll consider it a gg.. but in a case of like a speedling run-by or all-in where he gets lucky or something.. no i won't gg it, just leave.
on the other hand, I also dont mind if ppl leave without saying gg, no skin off my back. I often don't even say gg in reply to their gg, because I know the habit these days is to gg - then alt + qq so they normally leave the game b4 u can say anything... so I just let 'em say it or not.. and just game. gL

One of my friends don't gg when he plays right next to me, cause whats the point of gg'ing if the guy is right there infront of you. Still bothers me though lol

I personally think it feels really feels awkward when you're in the middle of doing something and all of a sudden he leaves, rather than saying GG.
It doesn't normally bother me, but sometimes I go "wtf just happened?" (Especially when I feel like I don't have that big of a lead)

I'm always pissed off when I get GG'ed back, however. It means they either had it prepared for when I say GG or they got it off faster than I could f10-e-s-q. And I am damn good at f10-e-s-q'ing.

If you wanna be uber bad manner, do this:
1. You are getting cheesed or you are cheesing
2. Defending cheese and crippling opponent, type to chat "gl hf"
3. succeeding cheese type "gl hf" (though much better if you use it on when defended cheese and have solid advantage)
For example, Terran bunker rushes you and you manage to defend it easily while terran lost a lot. Calmly type "gl hf" and wait some fun/angry comeback from opponent
+ Show Spoiler +Don't take it too seriously
|
i dont gg..i hate typing...it is so annoying..I only type something if someone start to bming me..other than that...typing is for ppl who don't have skype/vent/teamspeak...most ppl I play with are on Skype with me...

I wouldnt say its bad manners, like what idra does, but more like no manners.Like people who dont say hi when they enter a game or in real life. Its not a big deal to me but its weird because its such a non thing to do, like why not type gg, what does it cost you?
|
I like it because I can tell myself that I played so well that they were so frustrated playing against me. Ego boost, imo.
|
I only GG if it was *actually a good game* or if I'm playing someone I highly respect such as friends or good players.

I only gg when it was ACTUALLY a good game, win or lose. Unless it's against a friend or someone else I might know... Why lie? Sure, it's the nicer thing to do, but if you don't think it was a good game, I don't think you should be forced to say it. I love StarCraft too much to lie while playing it

well basicly it are just some words. and words mean nothing.. "I love you" only means something in a relation, after some conditions.
imo GG are just some meaningless words and in the end dont add anything negative or positive. but the fact is, its not bad to use them
|
not GGing imo is only BM if the match is any way formal i.e setup, bnet? whats the problem it's a random person you cant even see.
|
I find it hilarious. I've left games without saying gg because I was frustrated. It's no surprise some players feel the same way too.
|
i dont have a problem with my opponents not gging. I never let up until my opponent leaves to avoid any gg stayers.
Personally i always gg to avoid people getting butthurt.

In itself it's not such a big deal but I think it's kinda sad to see that most ppl have zero manner on the internet.
Anybody who played Heroes of Newerth beta or public DotA knows what I'm talking about...
|
lol only reason why starcraft you cant flame is because you'll lose flaming since of the typing
|
I sometimes don't see the point in saying GG, just because you may end up with a game that is NOT good . I mean, if you fuck something up, or just play like a tard, why should you be forced to say "GG" when infact it is not? ^^
|
bothers me when people say bg
|
|
I always say gg when i leave. On the other hand, if the opponent leaves without saying gg it doesn't bother me too much.. the victory alone satisfies me =p
|
What pisses me off more then no gg is someone saying "lol" "gg" like saying they weren't trying or something when you know damn well they were
|
when I lose in a game where I feel I played good, but lost to a better play I don't just gg, I also congratulate them on their good play. When I lose to a cheese I failed to scout, or to a mis micro, or in general just playing bad, I leave without GGing, but its never a shot at my opponent, or a rage quit, its just that I am so disappointed with my play I just wanna get out of the game fast, its immature but its how I am, I tilt easy. And if someone leaves without GGing it never bothers me, I won the game, I got my 130 points, why should I care about those 2 letters.
I guess im just saying, when I do it its because I messed up, not because I think my opponent is bad or got a lucky win or whatever, i just tilt easily, and since it doesn't bother me, I cant really see it from the other persons point of view.

Hmm.. I do that sometimes, but I don't mean it in that way. I'll say "lol gg" if they completely pwn me or something, as it can be quite funny, for example if someone was to nuke me and win the game that way, I would definitely lol.
But I can totally understand the frustration that people can feel when nothing seems to go their way, like workers glitching on the mineral patches when they split then their units not firing or getting stuck on each other (I'm sure we've all had 'that' game before), or something random like that that's out of their control. Or the game where you feel like you should have won, but they somehow come out with this massive force that perfectly counters yours out of nowhere. That's the sort of thing that might make people just press Alt+QQ without saying GG.
I always try to say it every game though.
|
To me there is only one thing that is even more stupid than blindly typing gg when the game wasnt even good.
Game begins. <him> "from?"
Just what the hell is the point? Almost everyone asks you "from?" at the beginning, yet rarely does anyone even give a shit where you're from. They just ask you, you tell them, and end of story. The problem begins when you don't reply, some people go through all sorts of trouble just to get you to tell them where you're from, only to follow your answer with 20 minutes of silence. Some actually get angry, or leave the game if you don't say anything.
I really don't get this, so I usually answer something ridiculous like "uzbekistan" or "tasmania" (sorry if you're from there!) just to see what they say.
I've gotten really good at typing "Argentina" fast so we can get it over with already.

How is it stupid? Writing ''gg'' isn't meant (at least not any longer) to say literally ''Good game''; it is a symbolical ceremony done to express our respect for our opponent. Since our sport is played through the cyberspace we cannot exhibit good sportsmanship by, for instance, shaking our opponents hand (which is the custom in many IRL sports).
|
i think it's hilarious when people act like idiots when you don't "gg" thereby losing the sliver of moral high ground they are using to justify acting like an idiot.
It's not that big of a deal.

This discussion is like the discussion in HoN about conceding. The reason of this rage is that the winning player deserves something for his win, in BW it is the GG, in HoN / DotA it is the free kills and dominating with your expensive items.

About the manners, typing gg just proves you have good manners, so not typing gg makes you not-prove-you-got-good-manner =D. Not that it's something offensive in it. I Personally always leave with gg (except in small occasions, like once in a month, where for example: some guy in cw 2 proxy gates me 3 times in a row and I lose 1-2 :@!!! ;D),

People who stay despite obviously having lost already deserve the "offensive gg"

im sort of neutral but afterwards if they asked for a re i say no(i care but at the same time i dont really care, does that even make any sense?:s), if they cant take the time to say gg then why would i waste my time giving them a re, most people who say its not a big deal are the average casual gamers.. gg is the equivalent of a handshake in a sport, not gging is disrespectful to your opponent
|
I usually just expect that they just forgot to gg. I do that sometimes; reverse the order of F10-e and enter-gg lol.
I do find it funny how many people take more pleasure in the other person not saying gg. If you've got a tendency to do that, then hope to dear god you yourself gg every game. Missing one would just make the loss that much more shameful.

I gg most of the time except for when zergs ling rush meh i just "alt+F4 smash keyboard out of window"

keep in mind people who aren't sc veterans probably don't even know about it

The only thing that bugs me is when someone GGs and then floats his shit all over the map for me to hunt down...
|
I only say gg if it was actually a good game. If you got a noob ally in 2v2, or your opponent abused a blatant imbalance in the game, then I'd have to say saying gg would be ridiculous.
Edit: And no I don't consider it bad mannered. What is bad mannered however is cockily saying GG at the beginning of the game.

|
i get kinda surprised when i get a little lag spike and see ".... has left the game!" before " .... : gg" but i don't mind it. i used to rage a bit at how op the other race would be, until people did it to me, and give me so much satisfaction. now i just gg and leave so they don't get any enjoyment out of it.
|
When I don't gg I feel like an even bigger loser.
|
sometimes when i get pissed off i just leave and don't type gg. but usually i do. it's bm if you don't.
|
I get highly offended when someone quits without typing GG
|
I don't say gg most of the time, but I really fucking hate it when someone beats me and says 'gg' before I say a thing. Asshats.
|
This doesn't bother me, I can understand why somebody would get mad and leave in a fury, I get mad all the time when I lose games.
What DOES bother me is if somebody doesn't say "gl hf" or something at the beginning. Would it kill you to be polite and say hi?
|
Yeah, playing games on US servers long enough will get even the most courteous player to not gg every now and then. With all the random flaming and lack of other players doing this type of thing, you get to the point where you just leave after some guy 4pools you and says 'gg' before you even think to.
Also, to be fair, I don't feel comfortable wishing my opponent good luck before a game. I really can't say I want luck to be involved at all, let alone against me. The 'gl hf' thing should really be reserved for fun inhouse FFAs and all that jazz, anyway.

omg that annoys the hell outta me.

One of the very few, 1 or 2, games where I didn't GG was when I, as Terran, lost to a 5-time gas steal followed by quick goons.
I then spent four hours playing against my n00b sister with specific instructions to gas steal against me to practice recovering :p
I also recall one where I lost to a 4pool by somebody with a 1750 rating on iCCup who switched to zerg at the last second in a game he created called "1v1 Desti D- come" but that's another subject
|
I don't say gg if it's really not a "gg"
mostly losing to 4pool...

mostly losing to 4pool... agreed. or if I get BM'd, especially scouts or mind controlled workers, there's gonna be no "gg".
|
i usually gg after losing a game, unless im really pissed off
as for my opponents; if they dont gg, it doesnt bother me, but if they say something like "i lost to trash" or something else condescending before leaving, i get a little ticked.

its like at the end of a soccer/football match when you dont shake the opponents hands at the end.

But you don't shake hands with a random group of people in the park you happen to play soccer with on any given day... do you? o.O;;
I guess I don't really know since I don't play soccer, but I certainly don't shake the hands of the people who happen to be at the basketball court at my local park... We just sort've play and move on.

My games always tend to end in people either whining or talking trash be it on my side or theirs... But then again, people in my neighborhood are pretty rude in general so I guess you could just chalk it up to that...

ya... after I win, you'd be hard pressed to find me complaining. I appreciate the gg, or the occasional compliment. But I'm more than happy each time my opponent leaves I'm not terribly bothered.
I always GG, and usually say something nice unless I totally got raped... or I got totally cheesed. I always feel some moral victory when you calmly GG and politely exit to the most heinous cheese you've ever witnessed.
|
|
i only GG when i feel that i just played a good game, if not i just leave.
|
I usually GG after games, but sometimes i rage quit because of cheese or stupid things. This includes when a zerg is 4 pooling me and i scout him before 2 minute mark.
|
I always GG, though it doesn't bother me if someone leaves without doing so. The most BM thing I ever do is if some cheeses me or offensive GGs me I'll make them eliminate me, though I won't go and hide pylons.

I never have the chance to say GG lately. I only GG when i play decently and lose, then i will GG. But if i play like shit and have 1-2k minerals saved up, and lose to another horrible player like me, it seems needless to call GoodGame, a game that was bad. What i do say is "well played" and leave, when my opponent plays good and i play like shit.
Seems like GoodGame has been overused to the point that nobody stops to read the natural meaning of these two words...

the question of gg differs from the question of a pro game... a game doesnt have do be good to be called gg, i mean even if i get 4pooled or anything and die after 3 minutes into i still type out with a gg
