TeamLiquid Interviews Violet

I managed to come into contact with KT's Violet last week! We talked for a bit, and I told him all about Team Liquid and the foreign fans. He was really impressed with our knowledge and dedication in following the proscene. After some discussion he agreed to an interview! As you can see, he's a really nice guy After reading this interview I hope you will become a fan of Violet, if you hadn't been one already. Be sure to check out the Woo Jung Ho International FanCafe initiative right here on TL!

This is the first in a series of great interviews to come, so be on the lookout for more interviews in the future!

Without further ado, here is Team Liquid's exclusive interview with Violet conducted via email:

Hi, this is LosingID8 from Team Liquid ^^

A Team Liquid interview is different from others. If you look at other community sites, their answers are standard and boring, so please write nice, long answers! ^^

Ok, here we go!

1. Please introduce yourself
Hello, my name is Woo Jung Ho and I am a 22 year old (T/N: 22 in Korean age, he is 20) progamer!

2. What did you want to be before you became a progamer?
I wanted to be one of those people who sing at a bar. It has a good atmosphere ^^ I thought that you received wages doing that, but then I found out that it’s something that people do for free to get more exposure ^^;; Another thing I wanted to be was a programmer.

3. Tell us how you became a progamer in terms of timeline & how you entered KT. Did you go through courage or were you drafted?
Yes, I passed Courage and became a semi-progamer. Via the 2007 2nd half draft I became a progamer. I have been in KT since May of 2007.

4. As a StarCraft player before you became a pro, who were your idols?
Reach, who is currently active in Airforce ACE.

5. Tell us how you became a progamer in terms of the evolution of your gameplay. What were the key realizations or improvements through practice that allowed you to reach the level necessary to join a pro team?
When I started playing I didn’t have the intent to be a progamer. It was just a hobby, but fortunately I became a semi-pro, and then I finally ended up being a progamer, which I had long admired ^^ I am the type of person who gets easily excited, so when my units die or when I lose a game I get very angry. When I first started playing it wasn’t like this, but after I became a progamer it has become more severe.. TT I haven’t been able to recover this. I am trying my best to recover. From the beginning until now I think that my skill is too inadequate~!!! TT

6. Describe your play style. Do you focus on your own strengths as Bisu does, or on the map and your opponent's weaknesses?
Although it changes depending on the situation, I am the type of player who focuses on creating havoc and a lot of small-scale battles. I am also confident in my macro ^^ I play to my strengths, and depending on the characteristics of the map I also show strategic play. I also play to the opponent’s weaknesses and I like using mindgames. I think that all progamers are similar with regard to this aspect.

7. Your level has increased dramatically in 2009, with a total record of 16-4. What caused your rapid improvement & what are your current goals?
I’m very flattered that you would say that those are very good results. I still feel as though I am too, too inadequate.. ^^;; I actually had planned for 2009 to be my last year as a progamer, so I wanted to try my hardest so that I would have no regrets. I thought that if results showed promise I would continue. Since my results have shown some promise I will continue to try harder in the future ^^ My current goal is to help my team get to the post-season of Proleague and to pass the offline preliminaries of the individual leagues.

8. You've become KT's first-line Protoss. Have your responsibilities within the team changed, or are you focused only on winning matches?
None of the hyungs (T/N: what a male calls an older male) that used to take care of me are around, and now there are a lot of players that have come after me, so I definitely feel a large responsibility. However it doesn’t feel burdensome at all. I feel that I need to be a role model for them so that they can grow up to become proper progamers, so I try not to show any bad sides of me.

9. A lot of fans say that in order to succeed in ProLeague playoffs, KT needs a powerful Protoss. Many of those fans think you are the Protoss the team needed to become more powerful. What do you think of that?
Although I don’t think I am good enough right now, I am glad that people view me like this. I really do want to become like that. Like Leta of Sparkyz, I want to be the reason why KT is considered a strong team. In order to become that I need to try harder though ^^

10. Are you aware of your nonkorean fanbase? You are popular with both hardcore fans & casual fans for your intelligent, exciting game style as a strong new Protoss. Non-korean fans watch you play live through internet streams every time you have a match. What would you like to say to your fans outside of Korea?
What is a casual fan? It’s a new word to me -.-;; This is the first time I was aware of the foreign fans, so I am very very happy. In the future I will do my best to repay everyone by showing even better and more fun games, so please keep cheering not only me on, but my other KT teammates and all the other Starcraft progamers ^^

11. Some nonkorean fans have chosen you as the Protoss most likely to lead the next generation of Protoss kings after the Taek-Bang era ends. As a fan it's much more exciting to try to look into the future, but as a player do you ever think about things like that?
I’m a bit embarrassed. Although I have heard this before, I am definitely not as good as Bisu or Stork, so I haven’t thought about the next generation of protosses. However I do think that Bisu and Stork have created an era of protoss, so in the future I want to create a new era of protoss dominance that is my own.

12. How did you prepare for your series against Luxury in the current GomTV league? How does training change when you're against a teammate? Did the series go as you expected?
Because I have a lot of Proleague appearances, honestly I was not able to practice for the GOMTV league. It seems as though Luxury-hyung was practicing… --++ When teammates play each other there are a lot of difficulties in practicing. A while ago when I played against Reach-hyung we didn’t practice with each other, either. In terms of the game, it went as I had predicted. Although I lost the 2nd game, I think it was because due to the lack of practice I didn’t make the correct decisions.

13. Please give your thoughts on your series against CJ's Effort in the current GomTV league. How close to your expectations were the matches?
Unfortunately as I write the responses to this interview, the results of the game have already come out .. TT I really wasn’t able to prepare enough. Because I had a proleague match I was only able to practice a little bit the day of the match. I didn’t have any confidence and I think I wasn't mentally prepared. My gameplay wasn’t very good so I am sorry to all the fans.

14. Who are you close to in the progaming world?
At the moment I am not close with any progamers from other teams. I plan to make friends in the future.

15. Do you have any frequent practice partners from other teams, or outside of the progaming teams?
Nope, I usually just practice with my teammates. I don’t really practice with any others.

16. Who's the best player in the world right now in terms of current gameplay?
Of course it’s "Bisu" Kim Taek Yong!

17. Ever heard of or played with IdrA or any other nonkorean players?
I recognize the ID, and I saw him playing in the GOMTV league. The other foreigner IDs I know are Draco, Nal_Testie? Is that right… and suncow.

18. What's your ICCup account?
It’s unfortunate, but I can’t tell you because it’s a secret ^^; My highest rank was A+ though.

I actually know of the site Team Liquid and I come and visit every once in a while. ^^ I wish you guys continued success! Team Liquid Fighting!

Thank you!

PS: I sent Violet an email with the link to this thread so feel free to leave a kind comment for him!

Ahahaha 'suncow'

Cute.

This guy is so genuine. Surprised that he admits he was planning to quit this year if he didn't show results. I'm glad that he's doing better now, though. His games are so fun :x

For some reason when most progamers are being humble it seems like affected behavior that's done just due to expectations. Violet's humility sounds very honest though; I like that.

LOL

He mentioned Reach in another interview and I commented there ._.

but yeah there's a bit of Reach-influence in his play. Nice maelstroming and storms and such; also macro/harass ability. It's to be expected.

16. Who's the best player in the world right now in terms of current gameplay?
Of course it’s "Bisu" Kim Taek Yong!

From this and the other interview that was recently translated, it is clear that Violet has a strong Protoss bias.
What is a casual fan? It’s a new word to me.

The man has a point. "Casual fanatic" is something of a contradiction in terms.

Nice interview. Violet is a good subject.

Violet seems like such a cool unique guy, nice too n_n I like him.

He looks up to Reach too so you know he's smart.

EDIT: On the off-chance that Violet does see this and have it translated to him or something... I think Bisu is the best too, but your game were you beat Bisu is one of the best this year definitely, congrats!

Awesome interview by Violet. I really love his play and style, and the fact that he tries to play a straight up game no matter who he faces, watching that game vs Bisu on Medusa and him dismantling Bisu straight up made me a fan, and I have been following his games ever since. He seems like a humble and really nice guy, his humility also shows in his other interviews. This guy's hype is the real deal, like Effort, just showing solid straight up play, unlike other tosses like Horang2 which all in alot.

One of the things that I like about Violet is he values his team performance over his individual performance. His #1 priority is to get KT into the playoffs and he's sacrificing individual league (even if it's just GOM) practice time to ensure that he's in top form for his team in the Proleague. Definitely a cool, down to earth guy.

Very nice guy. As usual, Korean Progamers are so humble I feel like a complete dirty bastard after reading. how can these guys be so... nice... to everybody?

Any P that admires Reach has my support. (fanboy mode: on) Reach started a new era for Protoss bringing in insane macro as well as unusual mechanics (back then) such as Maelstrom, sudden Carrier rush and multi reaver drops. That's why so many people believe that even though he wasn't the best player ever (maybe the best at his prime), his games were simply amazing to watch. (fanboy mode: off)

Yay!!! Great interview. With every single intervie with Violet I am beoming bigger and bigger fan of him.

I really like how he is geniune in his interviews and really speaks his mind. His interviews are never boring. I'm really glad that after hard time in KT he is doing so well lately.

All the best to you Violet! You are one of my favourite progamers!

Good interview.
I remember soemwhere saying that Violet was to be the next Neo-Reach, being trained by him when they were both in KTF
Same being said for tempest, who, I believe, was said to be trained by Nal_rA.

Either or - i'm glad that he's deciding to stick w/ pro-gaming a bit more and try harder for the fans and himself. I think in the end he'll be more satisfied w/ himself for doing so - regardless of the results. Afterall, its all about the love of the game and trying ur best to compete for recogniztion - all that matters is that you try and you will get respect for it.

I am shocked that he didn't have much time to practice for his GOMtv series against Effort, considering he was getting so close to the finals, being in the RO8 against Effort. He did so well against team-mate luxury in RO16, you would think KT management would have given him more time to prepare for individual league - but maybe management more concerned w/ proleague since it's team-based (evil companies)

but ya - Good luck Woo jung Ho!!
He's definately carrying the torch and representing as a strong/fierce Protoss for KT.

Suncow was a Polish Zerg who came to Korea around the time of Draco to try to become pro (straight up from Courage though, not from a license which is how Draco became pro). Unlucky for him, his personality was of a abrasive, rash person (read up Rek's stories for more info) and he never got far. IIRC, he is now a tennis teacher in Egypt (?).

obviously he's aware that there are foreign fans. he can tell just by all the non koreans that show up to watch proleague matches in the studios. he's also likely aware that the huge superstars (boxer, nada, savior etc) have nonkorean fans, but i doubt that he realized that he actually has fans.

The guy is so self depricating that he probably didn't consider foreign fans would like him over, say, the more powerful and better exposed players. Teamliquid's got a great Database though. :D

Great interview! If you're reading this Violet, know that the foreigner community supports you 100%! You're one of the few Protoss players that I like watching . Don't give up! Although you're only 54 in the Kespa ranking, I'm sure you can break into the top 25 at the very least!

Good luck!

Was this interview in English, or translated? He has really good english if it wasn't translated hah.

Him mentioning suncow really made me laugh, haven't heard that guy's name in so long, and then out of the blue Violet mentions him.

Yeah Violet is a really cool guy, he seems kind of melancholy though.

I really like Violet's personality. Just like Shizuru said,
how can u not like this guy?

I think everyone has known of Violet before this. Here's wishing him the best of luck in improving his game and whatever else he may pursue.

I could be wrong, but it seems like Violet needs to find a way to practice more versus matchups against his teammates. Maybe try asking other people what they do.

Violet was a player I didn't have much knowledge of. With his recent play however, I have been thoroughly impressed. I can definitely see some influence from Reach in his play style. In today's Protoss environment of macro mass and then steam roll, I find that highly offensive kind of play refreshing.

You are going to be one to watch, Violet. I wish you good luck!

Also, thank you for posting the interview.

Effort got trashed by Iron. Not a big deal, really. All good players have bad series, against good and bad players alike. There's no denying Violet's amazing gameplay (he may be inconsistent given his admitted temperament, though) and he's easily the most sincere and heartwarming progamer around, given his awesome underdog story.
Remember Violet.

anyone recommend any games from violet?

Would like to see some bisu like pvz.

Violet vs Hogil is probably his best pvz. Hour long pvz involving lots of dark archon usage. His gom series vs Luxury was also pretty good.

http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/games/12303_HoGiL_vs_Violet

His games vs Bisu and Guemchi were both excellent as well, he lost the one vs Guemchi but it was very close. He is on a small losing streak recently, but that's because he's been playing Effort, JD, etc. I think his pvt is still relatively untested.

From this and the other interview that was recently translated, it is clear that Violet has a strong Protoss bias.

(Errol1001 - this isn't to bitch at you, it's to provide my own insight into those who are whining about generic answers.)

I can't believe (some) people are calling these answers 'generic.' What a lot of you don't seem to fathom is that dishing the dirt on other gamers or providing information that isn't meant to be thrown around in interviews could land Jungho back on the B-team or worse. It's just not done and it's unreasonable to demand answers that might negatively impact upon the gamer's image.

Outside of selection evenings for MSL and OSL SC is pretty mannered (with the exception of certain rivalries.) It's not like FPS or other genres where tempers fray and people really express their anger/sadness to a more exaggerated degree (although I know a fair few SC players have cried recently and in the past of course.)

Also the gamers live scheduled and often hectic lives (dinner time with eSTRO is hectic enough!) which mean that even getting these kinds of interviews is pretty difficult - especially if you are not on site. If it was *easy* then TL would constantly provide home-grown interviews, but they are a pain to organize and take time and dedication to translate.

It's not fair to complain about things being 'generic.' (this annoyed me in my ProGamer Connection thread as well.) When you have no idea of the constraints of Korean society or those placed upon the gamers themselves to promote a positive image.

Also consider that more complicated questions mean more stress for those translating them and more possibilities of the true intentions behind both question and answer being miscommunicated (although we do have an exceptional team of people working on them of course.) Konadora and crew provide such a rapid pace of translations and we should all be very grateful (as I know the majority of people who reply to these kinds of threads are.) for all the time and effort they spend (without any kind of wage.) doing this for everyone.

I got cucumbers and Girl's Generation from Canata and LosingID8 not only managed to arrange, but also translated and worked hard upon this interview which really *does* demonstrate Jungho's IRL personality (having met him a year ago and continued to follow his career/attend his matches I speak from experience.)

Even fomos' team of Mani/Mr.Kang/Ms. Lee are all working hard to change up their interview questions and provide much more varied content which can be seen in the more recent translations by Konadora, Mrhoon and Smix.

Why don't you stop complaining unless you are willing to go to such lengths to contribute things as awesome for TL yourselves.

The interview and answers are pretty darn good if you consider that it was an email interview. I.e. no probing follow-up questions. Live and/or telephone interviews by experienced interviewers (people that don't get starstruck/intimidated) are really the best but I think it's an unreasonable expectation for a foreign fansite of E-Sports. Maybe one day we'll have the ability and access to pull off a live, in-depth interview, but this interview is pretty good in the meantime.

This interview is better than the usual ones.. but it's still to conservative imo.

We need more questions like:

'What does your girl need to have: good boobs/good ass?'

'Do you believe in God?'

'Is there a progamer that you think is overrated?'

'Do you have brothers or sisters?'

'Whats better, summer or winter?'

something to get a feel of the guy.

4 and 5 might be pretty interesting actually, but seriously 1-3 are totally not acceptable for a gamer interview. One is completely irrelevant to anything and way too personal to ask someone who is basically a complete stranger (unless you're talking about Susie and Sea or me and FBH etc.) Three is one of the questions you wouldn't ask because the gamer would *have* to give you a diplomatic answer that basically said *nothing* about a specific name (of a gamer) because otherwise he could get into a lot of trouble with his managers/coaches and could potentially harm the relationship between the two teams. It's just not done here.

Be realistic. You cannot treat a Korean progamer as you would a foreign scene one - they're in totally different situations and are governed by a very different series of rules when it comes to conduct - the closest we get to events where trash is talked and it's all pretty casual and humour based are MSL/OSL selection night and the Rival Battle Breaks - things like that are *very* rare.

Personally, I don't 'believe' in 'strangers' anymore.

I find it very stupid that you have to spend a bunch of time with people before you can start acting like yourself.
Manners and polite behavior is so last millenium.

Ask whatever you want, do whatever you want.

I'd start the interview with:
"You may chose to pass a question, but then we'll all think you're a pussy."

soooo "elvis or MJ?"

I realize not everyone thinks like me, so if you(whoever makes the interviews) have to take one thing from what I posted in this thread:

This would work fine in America or probably any other country, but here in Asia manners/polite behaviour and social hierachy (especially related to age and family) are still really prevalent.

I didn't understand it myself at first, but someone explained to me that making friends here depends upon connections and also the concept of 'friends' here is pretty different to the casual way in which you can become someone's friend elsewhere - alot of friendships stem from childhood and continue on until old age - even if it's not as widespread with younger people here the idea of asking 'friend level' questions in a professional interview is still pretty much out of the question.

Hence asking whatever we like just isn't possible. Especially not in a professional gaming enviroment - I think some more random questions would be fine, but anything too intense/asking people to dish the dirt just wouldn't pass the coaches/managers to be allowed to be published on or offline and if it wasn't pre-approved and got published anyway would land both the gamer and interviewer in trouble and compromise future interviews/contact with the team for things like merchandise sales etc - does anyone really want that just for the chance to hear if a gamer likes boobs or ass more? -_-;;;;;

If you want anymore interviews with any more progamers, asking if they like boobs or ass more will NOT get them for you. Proteams DO know of TL, they DO read our posts and they DO keep tabs on what's going on.

If because of a stupid interview a progamer got reprimanded, punished or (I know this is extreme but) taken off the roster, what good would that do for us in the future? It's not something I'd want to risk just for a few shits and giggles from the foreign community.

-> Get their opinions on things that you can _actually_ have different opinions about.

edit: I just realized this is my 2222 post.

If because of a stupid interview a progamer got reprimanded, punished or (I know this is extreme but) taken off the roster, what good would that do for us in the future? It's not something I'd want to risk just for a few shits and giggles from the foreign community.

Respect other cultures, son. Stop being ignorant.

Wow, you make it look like I KNOW the asian culture, but decide to act like I don't.

Still, I think the interviews could be much more interesting without any bad consequences.

Honestly, if I collected all the interviews, deleted the titles and made TL members read them and identify the player who was interviewed, I'd guess we'd have a pretty lame identification rate; they all say the same shit coz you ask questions that can't be answered in any other way.

thanks for the interview!

2. What did you want to be before you became a progamer?
I wanted to be one of those people who sing at a bar. It has a good atmosphere ^^ I thought that you received wages doing that, but then I found out that it’s something that people do for free to get more exposure ^^;; Another thing I wanted to be was a programmer.

hahaha i thought this was funny :D

This kind of thing has come up in dozens of threads. Our western culture is a lot more open, taboo and risky vs the asian one. While yes, their interviews are boring, the best way to find more variation would be to ask things like.. who's your favorite singer, what was your dream as a child, what do you like to do when not playing SC, etc. Even then, even if they enjoy hookers and booze, they would NEVER admit to that. This is a very very conservative culture. Everything they do is usually going to be away from the public eye. =/ Just be mindful when trying to inject your views on a culture you don't know anything about. Not everyone thinks like you do.

No, it's not a cultural thing.

It's the gamer/pro divide.

You think they are gamers and kids. Yes, but they are also professionals.

Are you going to ask lawyers if they like boobs or ass, about their religion, or to diss other lawyers in the after-court interview?

Even in America, pro athletes are reluctant to answer such questions.

People need to remember that these kids are professionals. Yes they are kids, but they are people who are paid to do what they do, they have bosses and parent companies with public images, just like any other professional, and thus they need to control what they say in any setting.

I missed this the first time, but I want to...

Bump, partly because it's a great interview (with TL!!) with an awesome player that shows the candidness of Violet, and also partly because of the current circumstances involving Violet (If you haven't already, check the Messages for Violet and the Going Violet for Violet threads), and I wanted everyone to appreciate what an awesome person he is.

Edit: I was hyperlinked into this interview through the power rank thread, but how do you navigate into the "Forum index > articles" section? I've been trying for some time now and i can't figure it out.
