the first headline i see under general is always "man decapitates wife" or "guy decapitates bus mate" or "father beats child and murders over xbox" "guy decapitated by rollercoaster" "shooter kills 2 and wounds 7" "nun torn to shred by jaguars" "man commits suicide with ps3 controller" "woman throws acid in husband's eyes" then to the milder "man sues company for doing something heinous" "company sues man for doing something heinous" "monastery sues local zoo" blah blah blah whatever piece of useless news information that we're supposed to acknowledge and give our 2 cents on and then never think about ever again

do we even need to know?

It would be cool if interesting news articles could be posted in a different section. I don't watch/read news much, so tidbits on TL are nice. But I agree they are unwelcome in the general forum.

I think if people limited it to very serious news (the kinda stuff heard/seen around the world) or things that would actually generate discussion, then it would be okay, even if there was still a fair bit of news being posted. But yeah it gets annoying seeing over and over again "Man eats children" followed by 300 posts of "Wow what is the world coming to" with no real discussion.

They provide no grounds for decent arguments, productive conversations, or anything to build on. Its always, "wow that's fucked up," rhetorics and sometimes it gets derailed to national/religious/e-penis conflicts. Fuck em'.

I'm with micronesia on this one. If the news is important or will stimulate discussion, then it is okay. But i'm getting sick of all these depressing stories being posted followed by hundreds of "fuck that guy" posts, one "this guy is my hero" post, and the rest being "ban that fag".

I think any news story for which all the typical responses can be predicted should not be posted. News stories should be posted only in hope of creating a meaningful discussion.
