So this is a fake article that circulated in 2005 and got picked up by the british press. You can read about it's history here:

So I've borrowed a ruleset... and I would like to ask you who would win.
* Fight takes place between 1 full-grown, male African lion and 40 midgets
* The midgets are unarmed (no guns, baseball bats, tasers, etc.)
* The fight takes place in a closed arena (a racquetball court for example)
* Fight is over when either a) the lion is dead, or b) all 40 midgets are dead or unable to fight back (severely wounded)
* Lion is highly agitated, midgets know there's no way out until the lion is dead (they have to fight)
* The midgets are not specially trained to fight (not like the Cambodian fighting ones in the article) but are in average physical and mental health
* The midgets are given 5 minutes before the fight to prepare/strategize

Easily midgets, but only if they realize that some of them will have to sacrifice themselves so the others can go for more vulnerable regions on the lion.

I would play an rts that incorporated this and other bizarre scenarios. I would play it with a huge grin on my face. Oh yes.

Lion has agility and strength. Midgets are stubby and clumsy - have to give it to the lion easy.

Lions usually hunt in packs. They do have a lot of strength, but they aren't the fastest big cat.
Midgets would be easy to pray on without anything to defend themselves.
Forty? I don't know. Lionesses are usually more aggressive than the males and they do the hunting.
A lion would be able to paw them away pretty easily.
It would be hard to corner the lion but if they were able to do that and Lion loses its will because there are so many then yeah I could see the midgets possibly winning.
If not and there's no coordination in circling the lion they be fucked.

Depends. With good strategy the midgets would win easily. If it were dark and they got suddenly attacked the lion could win easily. Chaos vs organization. Its like romans vs barbarians. If u make 4 lines of 10 midgets and move in a huge deathball theres no way a single lion can kill them all. If they all run around in chaos they die 1 by 1

guess the outcome of the fight will depend on this then. will the team be able to find some members who would be willing to sacrifice themselves? if not, they would probably fail from lack of coordination and teamwork. if they could find some willing to sac themselves.... well to me, that's pretty improbable....
maybe the group will succumb to groupthink and decide to beat up four of the wekest midgets and throw them out as bait for the lion while they set uo and form a ring around the lion to execute their attack.

5 minutes? The midgets are so fucked. 40 random people would be hard pressed to form ranks properly in 5 minutes, let alone organizationally equip themselves to fight anything that can easily kill them in seconds.

Midgets would have to be fearless to win. Unfortunately people usually dont fight for the sake of others.

That aside, lion wins. What can midgets do? Kick, punch, yea sure, they are midgets and the average midget leg is 60cm long and the average midget arm is something like 50cm long, which is kind of dangerously close to the lion, and forget biting since they'd have to be at point blank range to do so and the lion would just knock them out with 1 hit.
Also, lions are used to fighting off hyenas after catching a meal, and by hyenas I mean 4-5 of them surround 1 lion. If you substitute 1 hyena for 10 midgets, well then not only are lions used to it but they'll handle it easily.

This is a close fight,
On one hand, 40 midgets is a huge number and the lion will be surrounded completely.
On the other hand, like a big mass roach ball in sc2, most midgets won't have the range to hit the lion and will clump. They also won't be able to hit at the same time, most will have to be idle.
SO i dunno...

40 midgest acting selflessly with one mind like zealots in a deathball could do it, but not 40 individuals trying to protect themselves.

Obviously midgets. Just surround and have them all stand on top of the lion, eventually they'll be too heavy, then proceed to choke to death

Ok, so mr. Lion decides to cleave some midgets, imagine 5 midgets or so dieing by a few rapid claw movements/bites by the lion. There's 35 trained midgets there who knows the lion dying is the only way to survive, notice the word trained.
Since they also know there's no way out except if they kill the lion there's more than enough surface area to attack the lion on without the lion being able to defend all places at once.
I cannot imagine 40 midgets losing to 1 lion. Maybe 2-3 lions or less midgets to make it more interesting.
