Hip Hip Hooray for Finland for taking the gold medal in ice-hockey last evening and thus claiming the World Championship this year, after sixteen years of silence and disappointments. Some people seem to forget this mentioned time gap between the ‘spectacular’ moments in Finnish sports history. Or is it, rather, exactly this mentioned gap that gives the means and reasons for people to fall down into mass stupidity and arrogance?

Personally I have never been a serious hockey fan and most likely never will be, but it still does not make me unable to be joyful for others who themselves gain happiness when a favourite team of theirs wins an important sports event. But this time I can not really be happy, on the contrary I am very disappointed on some individuals.

This video tells more than thousand words can:
http://www.iltalehti.fi/nettitv/?30918431
“Butt naked Finns swimming in a fountain pool in the middle of the second biggest city of the country” …. ‘nuff said?

And how I wish there would be only couple of these individuals acting like retarded asses but no, the truth is that there were hundreds or if not thousands of these idiots gathering up their forces into an ugly mass of plain fucktardness.

Let me give you some points: it was already mentioned that Finland won the gold medal for the first time in sixteen years. Sure, it is a great day for the history of hockey in the country, but why can not Finns just be happy about it without rubbing it to the faces of Swedes. Did you forget that since -95, our previous championship, Sweden took the gold for two times, and also beat Finland with even more embarrassing way opposed to how they lost to Finland this year – namely, the time when Finland lost from ‘guaranteed’ 5-1 situation? Swedes have eight championships in total, opposed to Finland’s two … which the last one they got just yesterday.

In this perspective I must ask: exactly how stupid can you be, for being one of the people who jumped into a car (most likely drunk) and drove down to Sweden’s side of the border and started making a ruckus? Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people who gather en masse to your cars and drive to the losing team’s country and start beating them up, driving them over with cars, and even burning their flags?! Seriously, for crying out loud! Who the hell burns the country-flag of an opposing sports team … inside their own country?!

News reference to what previously was mentioned (in Finnish):
http://www.iltalehti.fi/mmlatka2011/2011051613724170_jm.shtml

There is one more thing that I would like to point out, which is rather ironic in some sense. After 1995, Finland and Sweden have fought for the gold only once before now (-98), but have been in the top three for five times. Funnily enough, every time Finland loses to Sweden, they still go to the same city to pick a fight where they went this time as they won. Is this a question of hillbilly tradition or just plain idiocy – on another thought, is there a difference? In my eyes, and many others, Finns are just bad winners and sore losers. How about you guys start acting in according to good taste of the Swedish media, as they are not afraid of making fun of themselves:

http://www.iltalehti.fi/mmlatka2011/2011051613723795_jm.shtml
(Explanation: The Finnish team is called the ’lions’ in according to their insignias, where as the Swedes have three crowns in their hockey shirts. A lion eating crowns – should make sense…)

I think the problem with sports afficionados is that they sometimes demonize the enemy to make themselves feel a bit better of the situation they have been in. Like you said, 16 years is definitely a long time. However, when people start forgetting the nature that is Hockey, as a sport it honors something called, "sportsmanship."

I feel it's been forgotten, and it's quite sad to see people go to such extremes to show support for their national team, and then representing them in a bad way. I am at a state of dismay whenever some Vancouver fan completely makes a fool of the whole city and the team in general when they do something completely unecessary to show "support."

As far as I gathered Sweden and Finland have a rivalry in almost anything that pits them against each other. The Swedish world jr team always tries to get under Canada's skin and usually ends up losing. It is something for everyone to unite against a common "evil".

Enjoy the happiness in your country.

Man, some people just cross the line way too often. :/

Finland definitely deserved the gold this time though! Very well played.

One thing to note is Swedes bashed Finland's team before the finals which has just fueled the bm from finlands side. But i agree that some of us went a little bit too far. gg wp!

That's simply how finnish people are. Hockey seems to be really important to us for what ever reason, and people get kind of crazy from a win like that. I myself don't care at all, because it really won't help Finland in any way or form, it doesn't matter to me that the guys who win happen to be in the borders of Finland and speak the same language as me. Yes, they might have the same roots as me, but they are still complete strangers to me.

I don't think Finnish people are bad losers, (except for the real fans) it's so rare for them to achieve a win like this that they go nuts. Yes, it would be expected to behave better, but it seems like the finnish culture isn't exactly what you thought it was. People still like to make jokes about Swedish and Russia because of the past.

So because of this, I think the people are somewhat intelligent, but they see the win as a given right for them to go wild and do anything they want after a win like that to celebrate. Perhaps things will change in the future, I don't know.

That pic is pretty ironic I think, because the teary eyed swede that made it is showing himself as a sore loser while critisizing us for it.

The friendly 'war' in sports (and anything else for that matter) between Fin and Swe is of course granted. Name-calling, rubbing wins against the opposing team's face in some degree is just how the game works in any sports (football hooligans, anyone?). But these kind of flag burnings and beating up innocent Swedes in the name of a sports game is just completely on a different level.

Some players in Starcraft are also very 'arrogant' or at least very confident on themselves, based on their personal achievements, which then again give them the capability of mocking the opposing player (referring here to the mentioned bashing of Finland from the Sweden's side). However, I don't see any Naniwa fans stabbing ThorzaIn fans to the face through the interwebz (burning the swedish flag in this case wouldn't make any sense :D) It all comes down to the already mentioned sportmanship, which obviously some people are lacking horribly.

We are just passionate about hockey. I had the time of my life in the city after we won Sweden, it was fucking awesome. I was 5 years old when Finland won it's first gold so I really don't remember it. That's why I most likely will never forget last night. The whole city was like a big family, it didn't matter if you didn't know people, you could just go and celebrate with totally random people and it was still amazing and so fun.

I don't really understand why you think it's bad that there were some "Butt naked Finns swimming in a fountain pool in the middle of the second biggest city of the country". I was there and I thought it was hilarious. Even I went to the fountain pool for a quick swim (though not butt naked). The atmosphere was amazing, everyone was just so happy.

But I agree, that's horrible that some people actually went to Sweden to start a fight. Then again, here in Tampere there were no fights at all during the whole night according to the police. And there was atleast 10 000 people there. Some people just are dumb as hell, nothing we can do about it.

And one more thing. I know Sweden has won 8 championships and Finland only 2. That doesn't mean we can't rub it in their face a bit after all the smacktalk from them before the finals. Mats Sundin even said 'There is no chance that Sweden can lose the finals'. But yeah, guess what, we won and it feels great.

This thread isn't about Esa Tikkanen and I am greatly disappointed.

I think most fans are cool peoples though. The Finns and Swedes have a pretty bitter rivalry!

I just don't understand what makes a Finn to take off his clothes and go swimming in a fountain O_o
But then again, I've done more stupid stuff than that as well, while being completely drunk, so I don't really mind it that much ... if it'll give you the kicks then go ahead.

Rather, I was trying to make a point from less to worse - naked people in the fountain, into burnings of country flags and beating up Swedes.

edit: I think I already said that there's nothing wrong with rubbing the mockery of the Swedes back to their faces. The problem only occurs when the face-rubbing goes into completely unnecessary levels.

No, they were swimming in a fountain in the 2nd biggest city of Finland.
They did, however, drive down to Sweden's side and beat up people, drove them over with cars, and burned Swedish flags... in their damn country.

I think these rivalries are cool as long as it's meant as fun rather than dead serious.

I still remember a game between Sweeden and Finland where the Sweedish fans were cheering when a Finnish player stayed down after a particularly harsh body-check. It's all part of the fun. Of course trying to get non-fans involved is obnoxious. I guess some people just take it too seriously.

I've never understood why the competitors nationality is somehow a big deal.
Finns are unbearable in this regard. I can't watch any national competitions with them.
I guess it's good for your self-esteem when some other person who might or might not have spent most of their life in more or less the same geographical area wins something that they have worked their ass off for instead of some other human being.
And when I ask anyone why it's such a big deal no one ever gives me a real answer.
I have no idea where it comes from or what it is.

I'm an antifan of the finnish national team because they all but one have left me with the impression of a complete tool and a dumbass. I also have problems with where the sport has been going for the past 30 or so years.

I have been a hockey fan for my whole small life, and have watched pretty much all of Finlands major tournament games for +10 years now. Yet this win didn't really move me to such extent as it did many people. I feel that most people are just using it as an excuse to act like morons, they neither understand the actual sport nor does it mean much to them.

Makes me feel sick seeing people attention whoring to that extent over the excuse of other peoples success. Fair enough for the people that actually won the championship but it's no excuse for the whole country to go nuts.

good taste of the Swedish media

Not sure if serious at that though.

Why do people care about the world cup in hockey anyway? Only thing that matters is the olympics. The world cup is played every year afaik, and every year the best players turn it down and don't show. So the national teams are just second rate players fighting to be "best in the world"

But yes, Fin and Swe have a pretty sick rivavlry. I remember after the 5-1 to 5-6 loss for Finland, my finish teacher didn´t show up for school for like three days and refused to talk about it afterwards.
