Another event, another post! Switching up my gear a little this time, though.

- Nikon D3S -- my main body. Newly last-gen according to Nikon, as they've finally pulled it out of their current lineup in favor of the new D4.
- Nikon D3 -- my backup body. Slowly learning how to deal with the differences in image quality between bodies at ISO6400 or higher, but still a reliable shooter anyway.
- Nikon 300mm f/2.8 -- still my favorite lens. Lots of reach, and great for getting full body shots from across the hall, or head & shoulders shots from the front row. Handheld, of course. Skip the monopods; the mobility is worth the extra fatigue.
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 -- bread and butter photojournalist lens. Not much more needs to be said.
- Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 -- another must-have for low light.
- Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 -- wide angle typically isn't my thing, but I got a couple good shots with it so why not borrow it again.
- Nikon SB-800 -- just in case ISO102400 doesn't cut it.
- Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 -- substituting this lens in this time around. Decent in low light, one of the smoothest manual focus lenses I've gotten to use, and with a 1:2 max magnification ratio, it counts as a macro lens (for food photos, of course!)
- Nikon 24mm f/1.4 -- renting this one for both MLG Columbus and IPL4 from LensRentals.com (Rented stuff from them for years now. Always reliable!) so I can see if it's worth sinking some money on. Might also rent a Zeiss 25mm f/2.0 some time just to see if the difference in image quality is worth losing autofocus over.
- New laptop -- HP Envy 15 (late 2011 model) with a 1080p screen, quad core i7, and onboard AMD 7690 graphics. Could not stand dealing with Intel graphics anymore on my last laptop. USB 3.0 is a bonus.
- The usual miscellanea -- 4x EN-EL4a's, 6x 16GB CF cards, new Kingston USB 3.0 card reader

Do you find the manual zoom on the Zeiss a hindrance? Why choose that lens over a 50mm 1.4 af-s? Are sony zeiss lenses that much better in terms of sharpness?

No -- the subjects aren't moving anyway, so MF isn't a big deal.
That and I plan on never taking my strobe out of my backpack. It's literally just in case I need it, and nothing more.
