I honestly can't think of any other artist who writes their music sounding so straight from the soul. So many times he's written the perfect song; so many songs he's actually made me have to lay and just calm my emotions and think. Does anyone else on this website love him as much as I do? Probably not.
I haven't mentioned No-Man or Blackfield, as his best work, where he's either fully or mostly responsible for the song-writing, is with Porcupine Tree or on his own. The former two projects do have some gems, though I can't stand the singer in No-Man.

The solo on that song is truly amazing.
I saw them at Place des Arts when they came to play "The Incident", one of the best show I've seen in my entire life! Steven Wilson truly is a genius, he's a little arrogant, but amazing none the less. I am wearing a Porcupine Tree's T-Shirt right now!

I saw Porcupine Tree on this years download festival in England. The rain was poring down and it was freezing. But when Porcupine Tree went on the stage.. wow, they were just so amazing. We were freezing and wet as a motherfucker, but we didnt care. Probably one of my best concert experience for a while.
Sadly, I don't really listen to FoaBP much lately. I've been Deadwing-binging -- but, then again, I've been Deadwing-binging for about two months now. That's my excuse!
For serious, though, the last movement of Anesthetize on FoaBP is one of the most touching pieces of music I've ever heard. When I first listened to the song, the heavy second movement didn't really do much for me, but that song is geniusly wrapped-up by the last movement. The second movement, on it's own, feels almost meh, but the conceptual binding of that song is fantastic.
I already tried a lot, but never really liked PT that much. Don't know exactly why, maybe it's the melodies themselves that don't attract me, I always found them kind of bland.
Steven Wilson is pretty much the perfect songwriter. Porcupine Tree has to be my favourite band, closely followed by Tool. Seriously, when Gavin joined in..... magic was created.

I had never heard PT / Steven Wilson before, so I just picked "Trains" and let it play. Really enjoyable stuff. Distinctly English, in the way that I hear little bits of Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull. Thanks for the recommendation.
@peekay.switch -- "little" arrogant? He doesn't say much to compromise himself, but just his body-language alone in the Arriving Somewhere DVD is hilariously over-the-top conceited. I still love him, though. And Time Flies has actually motivated me in life in a couple areas, as extreme as that sounds

@tec27 -- despite it's conventionality, Trains is a surpriiiiiiiisingly good song. It's like this master musician said, "oh, so this 'Pop' music is all the rage, is it? Let me show you how it's done," nailed it, and moved on. One of my favourite songs ever. I love musicians who find the perfect balance between standard format and more experimental or niche sounds.
@rockslave -- to each their own! I wouldn't expect anyone to love Glitch/IDM/Dark Electro, and that's some of my favourite music despite their often-inaccessible sounds.

@Mrwl -- I wouldn't say, "perfect." Have you listened to some of their lyrics? Lightbulb Sun has some horrrrrrrrribly-written vocals.
@Zallatik -- When you've listened to a lot of their stuff, you end-up hearing a loooooot of Pink Floyd and King Crimson.
