Kinetic watches. Seiko. Do they work?

So I've been looking around for some watches. Mostly just for fun, because I love good looking watches. The Seiko kinetic watches seems really cool, but do they actually work? I mean, it sounds good on paper "infinite working power" etc. but some places I've read they die out after 2 years. Does anyone have any experience with this?

My dad bought a Seiko watch about 10-12 years ago, and it still works. Really good they are.

Was it a kinetic one?

I think so, if by kinetic you mean those watches that you have to shake every few hours.

I used to have a Kinetic Watch. It's really fun (imo) to shake it in front of others and catch attention.

But while I was shaking it one time, it dropped on the ground and broke.

I was deciding between a Seiko Kinetic or a Citizen Eco Drive, they are both "immortal" watches. I bought one of the Eco Drives because they all just look so awesome. They seem to also charge off any light source, not just the sun. I have had mine for three years now, no issues. I've read the Seiko Kinetic will stop if left untouched, it does take quite a while though, couple of days I think. I just didn't like the designs and they seemed to be more expensive, more moving parts I think.

The good kinetic watches aren't supposed to be shaken (although some people do that anyways, but it can damage them). You're supposed to be able to turn the crown to wind the spring manually. And you only have to do that if you haven't worn the watch for 48h or so. Otherwise it winds itself automatically with the small daily hand movements you do (that's the whole point of an automatic watch...).
And yes they are quite reliable, but a watche's marksmanship scales with it's price, so try looking into what you want to buy before making the purchase.

Also, why are you talking about Seiko watches specifically?

Mine has something like that but i never have to shake it, just powered by normal motion.

Because thats the ones I've been checking out. For intance I think this one looks really cool.

Also, you say they can be damaged when shaken? Are they more fragile than normal battery driven watches? Because I wear my watches all the time. For intance I play ALOT of table football where a lot a shaken is going on with my hands and fast wrist movements. Would this dmg these kinetic watches?

That is true. But for people like us that stays indoor playing starcraft and browsing teamliquid most of the time, the watch will need an extra boost. =)

No they aren't more fragile than battery driven watches, but if you violently shook your battery driven watch every day, it would get worn out way faster too.
This isn't an issue anyways, since most automatic watches have a manual spring winding mechanism.

However, if I wore an expensive watch i'd probably take it off anyways before playing babyfoot, pingpong, squash etc... I know that as a kid I broke all of my watches (I wore swatches mostly, so it's isn't much of a reference...) while doing sports. That's why I stopped wearing watches alltogether until recently.

Yes those do work.
And here a little medical history lesson for those who are interested.
For a long time only the very expensive watches had mechanism like you described.
So if you had a rich person coming into your office and you suspect him of having an early form of Parkinson's Disease, you could ask him if his watch worked normally in the last month or so.
That is because one of the more common symptoms of early Parkinson's Disease is that you don't move your arms while walking.

Uh... that's not really true anymore. Sure, if you get a crappy Swiss or American company the price may matter, but if you go Casio/Seiko/Citizen/etc. they'll all be excellent.

Wasn't there a small clip on 'How it's made', where they showed the process of making a Seiko watch. It was really awesome, and meticulous.

I have a citizen one and it has worked perfectly for 5 years now.

It's a bit annoying adjusting the time after not using it for a day or so sometimes.

Yeah, Japanese make damn good watches.

"Swiss made" means nothing anymore.

my dad has one of the kinetics it's nifty. although, as some people already mentioned, it's supposed to be powered by regular movement not ferocious spinning.

A $20 Casio will run better than a $100 Timex.
