Hi, TL-Netters in NY.
I was accepted to NYU this fall, and I'll be majoring in Journalism.
In 2 weeks I'll be moving from SoCal to Manhattan pretty much.

I been to New York for 2-3 days for a generic tour of the campus and the famous places (Statue of liberty, NYSE, Etc)

I just would like some info/feedback of NY Lifestyle.
-What I should expect in general.
-A popular/good/cheap place to buy clothes (since I'll buy most of my clothes there).
-Restaurants/food places I should not miss out on.
-Any other info that'll make my transition from Socal to NY smoother

Thanks again!

Has anyone in the journo business asked you the question yet?

"Oh you're gonna major in journalism."

"WHY?"

well, I've lived in NYC manhattan for four years during college (Columbia), so I'll do the best I can.

-What I should expect in general.
People might say the NYC lifestyle can get too fast and hectic. Although this is not entirely true, it is a bit faster paced than the typical "laid back" west coast lifestyle. I've learned that New Yorkers don't waste time--they are quick and to the point in what they say, and what they do. You might think they are abrasive at first, but you'll have to get used to it. Also, you'll have to get a thicker skin to survive in the city. New York can be the greatest city to live in, and the loneliest if you don't make friends/connections. Being a loner in such a huge city like New York can suck major balls. If you're not used to living in a dense, urban area, the sheer magnitude of Manhattan can overwhelm you if you're not prepared. If you stare down any major street in Manhattan, you'll seer rows and rows of tall buildings that seem to go on forever.

-A popular/good/cheap place to buy clothes (since I'll buy most of my clothes there).
H&M is a popular retail chain in New York. Style is similar to Gap, but has an edgier/hipster flavor. The prices can be reasonable during sales. There is also a store called Uniqlo, a japanese retailer. I personally like their designs because they are clean, chic, and aren't too dark and edgy for an urban oriented clothing store.

-Restaurants/food places I should not miss out on.
My favorite part ^^;; If you're into pastrami/corned beef sandwiches, check out Katz's Deli and 2nd Ave Deli. Both are very good. If you want to be a tourist, you can go to Carnegie Deli instead. Also, check out the 53rd and 6th Halal chicken and rice food cart. THE best in the city, hands down. You'll find it near the museum of modern art. And don't miss out on Chinatown. You'll be surprised how cheap and good the food is down there. Joe's Shanghai restaurant is a popular chinatown destination, famous for their soup dumplings. As for desert, I can only think of two places right now: Magnolia Bakery (Lazy Sunday cupcakes?) and serendipity ice cream.

-Any other info that'll make my transition from Socal to NY smoother
Hmm... weather-wise, be prepared for the COLD winters. The cold season usually goes from late november/early december to middle of march. The worst is probably around January or February. I can't think of anything else right now. I'm too tired.

Hmm Katz is pretty touristy as well lol

If you like Chinese go to Flushing. Flushing > CHinatown in my op. Golden Mall's one of my fav's. Plenty of great sit down and eat restaurants up and down the side streets of Flushing though.

For fun carnival-like fare, like corn dogs, hot dogs, cotton candy, etc you can go to Coney Island. Cool little aquarium there too.

Agreed. Flushing beats out Chinatown in terms of ... well everything. Chinatown is WAY too commercialized now. Food is crappier and more expensive since it's more aimed towards Westerners. Same thing for just about everything else. Meals in flushing cost about five bucks for something that is yummy and will fill you for the day. Five bucks gets you something like a shrimp roll in chinatown -.-.

A cheap place to get your cloth is daffy's. Professional & casual attire was easily found and it's pretty good.

As for what you should expect. People in NYC are better than people in other places in the US. =D

go to flushing
go the joe's shanghai in flushing

flushing joe's shanghai > chinatown joe's shanghai >>> manhattan joe's shanghai >>>>>> anything else

as long as you order the soup dumplings.

There's another soup dumpling joint in Flushing that's REALLY GOOD, almost on par with Flushing Joe's Shanghai, but I forgot the name.

BTW, flushing is in queens. Be ready for a long commute by subway if you're going to Queens. Also, if you like korean food, there is a k-town in manhattan. It's just one block of restaurants somewhere around 7th ave and 32nd/34th street. But the real K-town is in.... Flushing.

Express is kinda cheap when they have sales/you have coupons. It's pretty mainstream and I guess generic, but I still like their stuff a lot.
