It's pretty ludicrous how people at D (!) level are so content on snatching points to the point they'll unpause me 3 times in a row.
Basically I was playing a ZvP Destination and opening with a 3 hatch spire -> lurker build and got to 5 bases relatively easy.. at this point the phone rings, I pause and answer it, 3 seconds later he's unpaused and A-moved his dragoon/templar army in lurkers.. I pause, and he does it again... this time I don't notice until like 30 seconds later where my army's wiped out and he's on his to my 4th gas.. I pause once again (lol) and suprise.. he unpauses.
I continue playing but not with any confidence, with my resources now at 2k/2k.. and eventually I lose =(
I don't know what I'm expecting with this blog, I'm just kinda surprised that people go so far as to move up a rank (this win brought him to C-), be it hacking (hacking on iCCup lol wtf) or just simply unpausing.

pausing sucks, did you at least write what was going on?

Well, if you don't tell him why you need to pause he'll be like wtf. It really really sucks that unpausing isnt against the rules
Next time tell the person on the phone to wait a sec, set up a good defense, and then pause. when he runs his army in you can be like, LOL UNPAUSING JERK!

Read the post above yours? I did say I was on the phone.
'Think about others, too.' this contradicts your entire way of dealing with pauses, so wtf?
I mean fuck I'd understand if I was on the phone for like 2+ minutes, but most of the time people will just say 'Can I call you back?' then return to the game 20 seconds later.. that's common sense to me t.t

You forgot to type "ppp" to request a pause.
This is probably the most grievous error you made in this match, and is probably the reason why your opponent unpaused on you.
You should be glad nothing else happened. If he had reported you, you would've gotten a forfeit loss, received a warning, and possibly had your entire city banned by ICCUP.

hhhhmmmm a lot of opinions regarding unpausing...
I myself hate to pause the game but what if the phone call is really important? well, good thing there are other people here in the house that can answer it for me.
But, in any case there are still other players that are mannered that they would be for about 10 minutes. (which is very bad for my part, since I'm making him wait for me)

pausing the game really get into my nerves, out of 10 games theres like 3 games with stupid pause and wasted my time waiting for them.If they pause for like 5 secs,i dont complain at all but if its for few mins i will unpause without notice and 1a2a3a him making sure he will remember the consequences of pausing

I never pause the game when im playing, if someones calling, then I'll just call them back, but I understand why people want to pause, allthough its slightly annoying when this happens.
You make a game, someone joins, they dont pick a race or say anything as an indication of wanting to play, then leave because you're just sitting there waiting. Some times I've just started the game, only to see them leave later couse they werent ready. If you're not ready dont join ffs, or at least say SOMETHING.
And sometimes they pause like 4 seconds after the game has started. Whats up with that, come the fuck on. If the guy who paused justifies himself BEFORE pausing I'll give him 2-3 mins max. If he doesn't, too bad for him, time is money.
|
I've never really understood why people need to pause -_- If it's really important then why don't you just leave the game instead of pausing? With that said, I've usually waited up to 5 mins. Last week a korean dude paused for at least 5 mins without saying anything, so I unpaused and killed him(Although I had a huge advantage before that anyways). To make matters worse, he disced after I unpaused and I never got any points cuz the manual report shit is bugged t.t
|
Other than a phone ringing, what would make someone pause a game? I'd just let that shit go to the answering machine.
|
if they dont say a thing i give them 30 second to about 1 min. Even a "wait" is okay and than ill wait 2-3 mins. If they give a good reason about 5 mins. After that unpause. Im understanding unless you just pause without saying anything. Like "phone" or "door" is so hard to type.
I once had a game guy paused. I said ? and nothing. 30 seconds later i unpause and he immediatetly pauses again. wtf? and than i unpaused it and 30 seconds later get cursed at in broken english.

Yeah I think that's generally true. Most frustrating game ever , a ZvP, I said something like pp cause I had to take a piss (I drink a lot of water^^) he just unpauses right away, he attacks me with zealots I defend with mutas -> kill his main and his natural with muta hydra while he keeps spamming korean stuff which I can't read but it surely wasnt very friendly, he only has his hidden expansion (defended by cannons and too many HT to break with just hydras) left so I'm waiting for him to gg so I can finally take a fucking piss.
But I suck so bad that eventually after he killed ashit ton of drones with HT drop and a base with DT drop I still somehow miraculously manage to lose that game, while he keeps insulting me and calling me a chobo - turns out the guy was A- the season before(my ZvP is D+ and it was a D lvl game)... arg
hm OK I kinda drifted away from the topic. There can always be something annoying which you didnt expect when you play sc so I always wait as long as the guy says something. If he doesn't I'll do it like chill does and unpause after a while
|
I got so many free points thanks people like yourself. And for that I'm very grateful
|
This happened to me in a ZvT. Luckily my opponent was an idiot and I had time to make lurkers just in time to defend my natural. I proceeded to turn around and pressure, and won the game.
Then I hit him with a healthy amount of BM ("You unpause all your games to get to C-?") and built hatcheries under his floating command center. Then I infested it.
|
Stop lurkers work well with people that unpause.
|
some people just do it for fun.
I played against a korean who disc hacks against non koreans.
|
I cant imagine how could someone be enough of a piece of shit to unpause right away if the other player explained himself, not like 0.5-1 min makes any difference. Thankfully it happened only once or twice to me on Iccup.
|
I usually (whenever i actually play ) tell my opponent that it will only take 1 min.. or 2 mins max when i know it might take longer.
If my opponent pauses without saying anything I'll say '?', if there's no response I unpause. If he's gone on the phone I'll wait 3 mins or so and then ask whats up. I don't think I need to be waiting more than 3 minutes : o
Whenever my mom calls and I'm in the middle of a game I tell her I'm playing starcraft and I'll call her back later after my game's done. That's how it should be done!
|
yeah I unpause it instantly unless its someone I know. I play sc for fun not to sit around and wait for someone else's life. Turn off your phone and sc if it's a issue.
|
I think it's pretty cruel to pause the game in a normal iccup game. I usually don't answer phone when I play, but if I really have to go afk I'll just quit instead of disrupting the game. I believe that is the right thing to do. It's way more bad mannered making your opponent wait for you than to unpause when someone paused. It's a different situation in clanwars though, but as people just use iccup for practising and don't feel like wasting time on someone just because he wants to phone I don't really see any problem...

I also agree with what was said that you shouldn't answer the phone while playing iccup. If you have caller ID and it's important then just quit the game; alternately if you expect an important call then don't play iccup so the issue doesn't come up.

I just pause. If get unpaused dont really care, is fun to play anyway, if there is no hope i just leave, i dont get mad, i can lose some points and doesnt really matters.
And sometimes i unpause, sometimes i dont. This is one of the things why i preffer to play with friends.

Not really.

When you pause, it interrupts game flow a lot. Also, they don't know when you will come back. My rule of thumb is to give them 20 seconds and if they haven't cleared up what they need to by then I will require a good explanation that I agree with, otherwise I unpause.

I always unpause when somebody pauses. I don't start a game to sit around and if they lose because of it so what. I have lost games because I had to go afk and the guy wouldn't pause it's not the end of the world. If something is more important than the game and somebody does not want to wait then just deal with it.
|
If the other player give me the reason for pausing and how long i'm expecting to wait then I'll wait (to a certain limit).. but if they pause out of no where and don't give me explanation then i unpause.

I can see the caller ID on my phone from where I sit (and I put my cell just above my keyboard), so I can quickly decide whether I want to take the call or not while I'm playing.
Pausing sucks, it disrupts the game flow. I don't usually unpause instantly, but I understand people who do it in ladder games. It's slightly different when it's a tournament game I guess.
|
Sometimes it helps when there's a pause, you can sit back and have a think about how the game is going and what you should be doing.
For a ladder game, if they give a reason I'll just do something on my laptop while waiting. No reason = unpause.
|
I always decide to give the person time, but really if you're a stranger, you don't deserve it. I'm doing you a huge favour by letting you waste my time. That's the type of thing I should only do for casual games with friends. No one wants to wait for you to go to the bathroom, or take a call, or jerk off, or whatever the hell else you might be doing. It's not that hard to set apart 15 minutes of your life. Let someone else answer the phone or let it go to the answering machine.

I only pause for the door, I usually ignore the phone. I'm a pretty lenient person when it comes to pausing. If they give me any reason at all and aren't an asshole I'll usually wait. But if they pause without explanation and don't answer me, then I just get pissed off and unpause.
|

I don't see how it can disturb the flow of the game, I've had many people make this excuse to me but I've never had a problem with it. If anything it helps you take stock of your position.

to the pausing and unpausing stuff, i think it says in the iccup rules somewhere that nobody is obligated to wait. therefore nothing can be done for those who can't wait like 20 seconds

I'd say, some people are dickheads, while others are friendly. I can see how a progamer has a busy life when training, but you playing SC in your free time doesn't count as busy. The pause in the game is also a good time to take a second to think how the game progressed, what you did wrong and right and what you want to do next. That being said, without a reason given I just unpause myself, and otherwise I just wait as long as I think it is appropriate to wait. It doesn't take more than 30 seconds to tell a person you'll call them back within 15 minutes, so I'd roughly unpause at that time.
|
I should unpause more often, get some easy wins. Usually the thought doesn't even occur to me, I just kinda go "where the fuck did he go? hurry uuuuup "
|
depends on the game situation, if I'm way way ahead and I'm going to win either way, I usually just unpause because it's a waste of everyone's time, but if it's fairly even then I'll give them a few minutes. If the doorbell rings or something, you gotta go answer it, but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. If they're gone for 4-5 minutes then it must've been Grandma Millie coming for a visit so I just go
|
I wait about 2 minutes at which point I unpause, if you're gonna make a long call quit the game.
The argument you use in the OP works both ways, is moving up a rank and winning a game really so important that you're gonna make some guy you don't even know 3 minutes on you?

But I suck so bad that eventually after he killed ashit ton of drones with HT drop and a base with DT drop I still somehow miraculously manage to lose that game, while he keeps insulting me and calling me a chobo - turns out the guy was A- the season before(my ZvP is D+ and it was a D lvl game)... arg hm OK I kinda drifted away from the topic. There can always be something annoying which you didnt expect when you play sc so I always wait as long as the guy says something. If he doesn't I'll do it like chill does and unpause after a while
Your fault. How are you unable to wait a few minutes to take a piss? There's no rule against pausing and if you pause the game and it gets unpaused, you just have to deal with it. If it's an emergency, just leave the game.

I let people pause if they tell me its parents or a spouse, but anything else and I'll unpause. Even that is a courtesy. If somebody's willing to let you pause, go for it. But don't bitch when someone else doesn't want you wasting their time.
And you would seriously sit on the phone for 30+ seconds? Just say "I'm in the restroom I'll call you back in like 5 minutes" and call them when the game is done.

you shouldn't start the game if you're ever going to need to pause. If it's so important that it can't wait, then who cares about the game?

I was having a nice chat with this random bloke on iccup. I paused the game so I can go take a piss and grab another bottle of beer haha

This.
A few times i have been playing and got called by someone or whatever and i dont pause, just leave the game, is not the other guys fault that you have to do something.
Still, i like to be GM so i never unpause, unless the guy makes me wait like 15 minutes, then fuck him, time to win xD.

I don't know what I'm expecting with this blog, I'm just kinda surprised that people go so far as to move up a rank (this win brought him to C-), be it hacking (hacking on iCCup lol wtf) or just simply unpausing. It's pretty irritating when people pause, especially if they don't say what's going on. I'm there to play, not to watch a paused screen. Take care of your business in between games. Mute your phone. I don't unpause right away, but I'll countdown from 5 to 0 really quickly and then unpause. If you can't play all the way through, don't bother starting the game. Think about others, too. Look dude, we all have those moments where SC has to wait.
Have some fricking sympathy. Just wait, you'll be in that exact situation at one point sooner or later and there'll be nothing you can do about it except pause the game.
You'll see.

Woah some of you guys are really stingy about pausing. Generally I wait ~3 minutes no matter what, although it helps a lot if he explains what he needs to do. Sometimes I have to pause if I have to answer an important phone call or use the restroom unexpectedly, so I like to return the favor.

Does it really hurt to wait a couple minutes? So obsessed about SC that you can't be KIND and POLITE enough to wait that time?

U guys still have phones with wires ? Or cant play with head tilted to left/right shoulder with cellphone between ?
I always leave the game if opponent pauses on the first minutes. I also never unpaused any game, eventho it pisses me off that ppl cant speak on phone / play the sametime...

It's not about personality. If you do a simple cost/benefit analyst it's easy to see why people unpause. It's a ranked server and the guy pauses. If I wait, what do I get? Nothing, besides a few minutes of wasted time. What are the punishments for unpausing? Nothing, it's not against the rules. If I unpause, what do I get? An strategic advantage because I can do something while he is off taking his phone call or whatever and a mental advantage because he gets mad that he has to continue playing the game instead of doing whatever it is. If it's important, then he can just leave the game, there's nothing in it for me to wait and it can be advantageous to unpause.
That being said, I normally wait a minute or so, the only time I've unpaused immediately was in a game where I was about a minute away from winning and the guy pauses on me and didn't even give an explanation, then cursed me out before trying to pause again.

Divinek pretty much summed up what I wanted to say. It's at the opponent's discretion that you are able to pause. There is no right to pause though many people will have the time and courtesy to pause for 30 seconds to a few minutes. You make a judgement call. If those ladder points are so important, then keep playing. Otherwise accept that you might lose the game.

I'll wait a couple minutes if he says "just a sec", but I've waited 5 minutes before, asked what is up, and received no answers. After that I just left myself. I don't care about points enough to wait for someone to talk on the phone.

Personally I will give a short countdown (like 3 seconds) before unpausing if there is no reason.
If there is a reason i will wait 2-3 mins max before unpausing, or leaving the game myself if i feel i am behind.
If i need to pause during a game I will just gg and leave, unless i'm so far ahead that i just let the game go unpaused and hope I can still win when coming back.
I would have no issue against anyone that unpauses against me if I should ever pause the game. It's not their obligation to wait for me.
If sc is more important than what's on the phone than you shouldn't answer the phone in the first place. If the phone is more important than it shouldn't be such a big deal to leave the game. 2 very simple choices. They shouldn't be obliged to wait staring at a paused game when both of you could just move on at very little cost to either side.
edit: I give them some leeway out of courtesy, but I am fully aware that it is only that, I am not obliged even out of courtesy to do it.

Leaving/unpausing the game loses you much more time than waiting 30 sec. You have to search a new game which can take several minutes and you remove all meaning from the current game by not playing it to its end. And leavers are much worse that people who pause for a few seconds.
|
Btw imho, mods could make intresthing poll about this...

I think that disconnecting is worse than leavers. Not only do you have to remake a game or whatever, you have to wait the 45 seconds which is actually game seconds, so it's closer to a minute if I'm not wrong. And I'm not sure if this is hacks or not, but sometimes you can't disconnect them so you have to force close starcraft and reopen it, which is a bit annoying.

It really depends on the player you are facing. Once you start a game, it's your responsibility to finish it without interruptions. I'm a nice guy though, so I let people pause for up to a minute or so as long as they give a good reason (to close downloads or whatever).

I've never paused. I'm paused on once maybe every 30 games and I have only unpaused once because the guy was taking more than 7 minutes, I started counting. yeah...

god I hate people who unpause instantly/semi instantly I'll wait 5 minutes if they dont give a reason, 10 or so if they ask if I can wait.
I seriously think being unwilling to wait at least a couple minutes is a huge character flaw and I would have problems being friends with anyone who does that.

i wait 20 seconds so if what they're doing requires them to leave the room they have no idea whats going on, then i unpause.

its a risk you have to take. the other person is not bound to stay paused, and its more an ethical thing than abiding by any rules.
unfortunately, some people are bm
|
Eh usually unless i'm playing with a friend i will unpause after a few seconds just because its extremely annoying. Don't answer the phone during a game imo.
|
I generally do what do what others in this thread have stated, I will wait a couple minutes if a reason was given, but I won't wait long if it's simply a pause with no explanation; maybe twenty seconds. At the same time, I would like to un-pause after twenty or thirty seconds. I have no problem if you want to pick up the phone, see who it is and call them back, for that should take no longer then a half-minute. However if you begin to have a conversation, even a short one, I would un-pause. Unfortunately there is no way to know this, so I would un-pause after thirty seconds. I don't do this however because it has happened before where my opponent will disconnect if I un-pause on him.
