No it´s not. Trust me I´ve lived here all my life. But norwegian is easiest, you just need to get drunk enough...
Ok. This isn´t cool, but there was this one finnish guy who was pretty good in learning different languages some hundred years ago. He went to different african tribes and learned each ones language in couple of weeks, I guess he learned tens of different languages, which is a lot

Exactly. Korean male speaks fluent English in real life. Where's my youtube video?
The point was more that she was on TV and spoke it, and that she has become a celebrity because of it. And you speaking english as korean is much different. Everybody speaks English, english is easy. But if you dont think this is cool, then go learn Finnish.

I don't think it's cool at all. And learning English isn't as easy as you think. People only learn English because the United States is currently the most powerful and richest country.

No the reason is history and that english has speakers spread wide so learning english is most convenient for you´ll find an english speaker anywhere. And this fact makes nations support teaching english in schools and so it becomes a requirement.
There is also one thing. People say they can speak fluent/perfect english but the fact is they almost never do, it´s just the requisites seem lower for this particular language... Don´t know if I explained it clearly enough but hey I´m not a native speaker...
I kinda understand what's up, I would also be very impressed to see someone from other country speaking perfect portuguese - I've seen many attempts and they were all very bad... I applaud them when they can speak maybe a couple of words, but most people really know nothing.
It's also pretty funny when artists try to speak portuguese. I remember a Pearl Jam concert when the production of the gig gave Eddie Vedder (who was fucking drunk) a handout with some words in portuguese. He tried speaking them and I swear to god not a single person in the crowd understood ANYTHING at all. Just speaking in english woulda have been ten thousand times more effective in that situation.
One way or the other, speaking a hard language is not something bizarre or interesting enough to be a TV show material, in my opinion. Koreans just deal with foreigners who embrace their culture in a funny way I guess.

Well truthfully, it did start with the English Empire, but since it pretty much disappeared during the 20th century, America has since picked up the mantle. You are lying to yourself if you think America's wealth and power doesn't have anything to do with the fact that most people around the world know at least a little English.

basically every european country has up to few hundred people studying korean yearly, some of them become translators, some dont. This is nothing to be excited about, its borderline boring
Most of the people in this thread and on TL are multilingual but I still get pleasantly surprised when another person displays complete fluency in another language in grammar, accent, etc.

Err, not really. The grammar is pretty simple and there's no genders like in French or German (and many others). The pronounciation is just odd sometimes.
From what I've heard, Icelandic is very difficult. There was a show about a savant in English and he was challenged to learn Icelandic in 2 weeks and his coach spent a while talking about how difficult it is.
