In keeping with my resolution to do something I'm not good at every year (so I don't feel like a hypocrite when I tell my students to do whatever _they're_ not good at) I've started following the fitness thread, working out and lifting weights and eating like an amateur bodybuilder.

The food is absolutely disgusting but it lends me an air of moral superiority when I tell my students to shut up and memorise their spelling list. Not to mention the curl of my lips from the taste of the low fat milk (I abhore milk) I force myself to drink has a menacing effect on children below the age of 12.

The tinned tuna is the worst, though. Since protein builds muscle and tinned tuna is a cheap source of protein, I have to eat at least 3 tins a week. It's dry (ironic, since it's packed in water), tasteless (ironic, since it's preserved with salt) and really feels like I'm eating soggy cardboard.

I think tuna, knowing that they are the living, swimming equivalent of a protein shake, have cunningly evolved to taste like shit when cooked and canned. But it seems quite vindictive to inflict suffering on the guy who _didn't_ kill them _after_ they're dead.

The only kind of tuna I love is maguro sashimi/sushi, but it's so devilishly expensive. I can't wait to cover enough moral high ground so I can go back to being a geek. But until then...

here's what you do...

toast some bread, prepare the tuna (ie. with mayo/salt/pepper). spread the tuna over the bread and top with cheddar cheese, stick it in an 350 oven, and bake until it looks ready. There you go, tasty tuna.

Tuna salad is a Godsend, despite it giving you tuna breath for the next eighteen hours. Relish, cucumber, and mayonaisse should do it, though it shouldn't really fit in as a staple of a healthy diet.

OH YEAH, what you can do is something called a tuna melt. Cheese, butter, and frying = gold. Put it all in a buttered toasted bread sandwich, and you will feel in heaven, while your arteries are probably headed there as well.

I appreciate the suggestions, but the whole idea is to eat healthy and build character, which means no mayo and no butter.

I did try tuna with melted cheese minus the mayo. Not my cup of tea.

oh and also, if your one of these really skinny guys who almost never puts on fat then you really dont have to worry about eating too cleanly when your lifting, just make sure you get enough calories and protein

Oh, do tell me how I used it wrongly. The tuna is packed in water and salt but when I put it in my mouth it is dry and tasteless. Is that ironic or is it just surprising?

Wow I think tuna's absolutely delicious. Sometimes I eat it straight out of the can.

Fun and healthy tuna recipe:

One can of tuna, drain the water
Some chopped celery
Salt
Pepper
Cinnamon
Few teaspoons sesame oil.

Combine everything, and serve it on toasted bread. It's delicious!

Wow tuna is wonderful I love eating it

Irony is meant to be related to something dark for example, so and so got shot, how ironic he was extreamly anti guns or like so and so caught swine flu and is really sick, how ironic he told everyone that swine flu was harmless

saying that tuna is dry even though its in water isnt ironic, its weird or strange

btw man ontopic if you mix in salt, pepper and mayo and have it on crackers or in bread its really nice

Ah, no, irony can be related to something dark, but it doesn't have to be. Irony is basically when the opposite of your expectations happen, so that can be something dark or funny or anything, really. Like the Minister for Education says that the country's schools are top notch but sends his kids overseas to study.

If Malcolm Turnbull was forced to resign over his handling of the fake email incident, I would find that very ironic too.

I'm really not sure if I'm allowed to take mayo with ti but I guess a little wouldn't hurt since I'm quite skinny anyway. Thanks for the tip!

I don't really like tuna by itself but I love tuna salad. Since you can't eat mayo since you're trying to eat healthy, maybe try just adding relish/cucumber/peppers etc? That would probably make it better.

I open tuna, strain the fuck out of the water with the lid by squezing it for a few minutes a few times over the sink.
Then I get about a tsp of mayo, 1-2 tblsp of mustard, tsp of tabasco sauce, and a bit of pepper. Mix it all up and put it on toasted bread or put it on regular bread with cheese and melt that shit.

so bomb

and the best part is I don't even dirty a dish, just a butter knife.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

What BreaK and daz said are some of the things you can do to make it less disguisting. Hopefully you know that chicken is another good source of protein, as well as sardines. Protein shakes are good as well, but again, it might disgust you.

Lol though I've never heard someone expressing their disgust for tuna and low fat milk the way you did. I do some body building and yeah I don't like tuna that much but it's something you get used to.

try all different brands some are really dry/tasteless like you described and others are more "wet" and easier to eat. just find a brand that you like.

Why not eat fresh fish. I don't think canned tuna is nearly as good health wise. There's also a lot of mercury in canned tuna.

I hate canned tuna, I opt for canned salmon, a little bit more fat in it, but well worth not vomiting every time I eat.

Although admittedly, these days I am eating so bland due to my cutting diet that I don't even care what I eat or what it tastes like anymore.

I would rather eat fresh fish, the trouble is that tuna is just so much easier to prepare. No cooking involved. I also love salmon, but tuna is really cheap. Maybe I'll look a little harder in the supermarket and see if I can find a good compromise.

The tuna I'm eating now is the second cheapest I can find. It's actually not bad compared to the cheapest. When I was eating the cheapest tuna, even my cat wouldn't eat it. Now when I open a tin the cat tries to grab a nibble.

And yeah, I always go for the low fat, low salt tins.

You can always try canned chicken. Somewhat close nutrition wise, but it's a lot more moist and it tastes...well, exactly like chicken. Depending where you are, it may even cost roughly the same amount.

Here when a girl is ugly you call her a tuna ( well a "thon" in French ) and it is highly offensive. Kinda off topic but i think it is funny lol.

Btw i like roasted tuna. It tastes very differently than fishes. More like beef.

Also tinned tuna isn't that bad imo.

I don't understand why you can't have mayonnaise? maybe if you're overweight, but if not then get as many calories as you possibly can when working out ... i don't like tuna or smoked salmon or stuff like that without mayo and pepper, try lemon juice and creme fraiche as well.

Mix the canned tuna with come sliced grapes, mayo, and some chopped celery and eat it as a salad, on a sandwich, or on crackers. My mom does that and it tastes pretty good and it fairly easy to prepare if you have the needed items.

if i can derail this back to grammar nazi-ism, i think it's dangerous to define irony as being opposite of your expectation instead of a universal expectation, as many instances are just coincidence or improbable

for example, the alanis morrisette song is the worst offender, and a line like "it's like rain on your wedding day" has no inherent irony, as being a wedding day does not disqualify a day from raining, it's just coincidental that it chose your wedding day as a day to rain

Sure, since irony is meant as a literary device to communicate meaning, the meaning it communicates must be understandable to a wider audience than just yourself.

In the example you gave, a wedding day without rain would not really be your expectation, it would be more of your wish or hope. An expectation must be based on a reason, and as you pointed out, there is nor reason to expect a dry wedding day. Unless you are a witchdoctor who has convinced everyone of your power to control the weather.

I've been where you are before and I'd suggest eating more animal fat. As long as you're avoiding processed foods, bad carbs, and refined sugar, you'll be very healthy.

Here's a couple links and there's a ton more info on both of these sites:

I think Tuna is delicious.

I have it with Ritz sometimes, but that stuff is almost purely processed crap.

If you can't think of any better sources of protein, try peanut butter. Remember that saturated fat is good for Testosterone levels. I just have a spoon of this while drinking milk. Yum.

Canned fish breath in general is awful, I avoid at all costs

Why put mayo ... it's just bad. If you're going with tuna just salt and pepper with lettuce and tomato on bread.

Or just go with chicken in bulk.

you shouldn't be eating so much tuna cos of the mercury. Just find a cheap source of protein supplements. For singapore, nutritionpark.com is pretty good.

Balsamic vinegar gives tuna a nice flavor, if you don't want to prepare sandwiches or salad with tuna.

Not a big fan of canned tuna. However, fresh = great raw, and frozen tuna steaks = nice marinated on the grill (soy sauce, orange juice, lemon juice, lots of ginger, splash of olive oil so it won't stick... 30-60 minutes in a zip lock bag). Throw on a few veggies and you'll much happier + eating healthy.
