So, I'm looking for a part time job. I just need money because
1) I'm broke 2) I have no work experience 3) I'm kicked out of college for the fall, so it would be nice to keep myself occupied rather than waste time.
However, asides from volunteering at a hospital during my four years at high school, I pretty much have NO experience.
I submitted to a few places that were hiring online or paper application depending on the store. However, I have heard no response and it has at least been a month now. Which probably makes me think that they are full or don't want inexperienced people like me.
I don't know what I should do. Is it more effective if I walk in by a store and do the application over there, or would it not matter if I did it online? Because by walking in, it shows that you're somewhat eager to get a job since you drove to the actual place.
Someone who had once been in my shoes, please share me your experience and what is the most effective way to get a part time job..........!

Don't know. All I know is that Engineering was not for me and I will never take anything science-related AGAIN.

Way to be stereo-typical.

What area are you trying to get a job in (i mean, Local, are you near school or back at home?) I'd say try for a restaurant job serving cuz you can make good tips. Mall jobs pay shit.

I would pretty much get one anywhere I can. I just want to get paid!!! As long as the location isn't too far. ^^
Okay, I will look into restaurants this week. Summer school being over makes me feel so free

NYSYEP wouldve been a great alternative but dont think they accept NJ residents. Work and going to a few class lectures (You recieve money for going to the classes too), by the end of summer and start of college you get payed.
edit: And well the deadline was Mid-May for sign-ups. Too late.

maybe bar work? the pay isnt too bad, and they hire young / inexperienced kids provided they have the right certificates (dunno about the us, but here you do a 6hour course for like 70 bucks and ur qualified lol)
you can work as a bartender once you get more experienced, but you might start off as a glassy just picking up empty glasses and mugs and cleaning etc
also another bonus is u can get night hours, meaning you can study at college during the day, and then work at night

try signing up for work at the library
the work is simple, not strenuous, safe environment, easy access to materials (would be more useful when you resume college).
im a library aide in san diego, and as a first job/new hire, i make 10.80 an hour (before income tax etc)

When I'm trying to find a new job I just mass apply to places. It took about 18 applications before I got my first job, and that was at a fast food restaurant. Remember, everyone out there qualifies as 'no experience' at some point, so if you dont know anyone to get a job from you simply have to apply everyone. You really cant choose where you want to work when you're first starting out, but I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and that greatly helped me get my first job.
If they dont call within 3-4 days they usually arent hiring. I have had people call me 3 months later but thats super rare and only if they have a staffing emergency (they wont tell you that though )

Supermarkets, department store? Or are you looking for something more "technical"?
|
@Cambium: Anything as long as I get paid.
I applied to a few supermarkets, grocery stores, and stores at the mall. As of now I probably applied to ~8-9 places

Then you really shouldn't have a problem getting a job. Just send out massive number of applications, I'm sure you'll be fine
|
Yeah, just mass applications everywhere as people have said. With no experience you have to take what you can get.
I'd highly recommend a labor job though. Definitely the best job I've had and it's next to impossible to make less than 10/hr if you're doing real construction work.
|
Try asking your family/friends? Not many options when you have little/no experience as I know.
|
Ok. Apply to as many places as possible. Then after about a week, if you do not hear anything, you should call back and ask to speak to the manager. It is to let them know you are interested and to get them to know you. You just call and be like, "Hi. I turned in an application about a week ago. I am wondering if you have reviewed or considered anything." Just to check up. Oh, and also turn in a resume because it looks nice and professional. Those 4 years of working at a hospital as a volunteer looks nice on a resume.
|
I would definately suggest doing anything involving manual labor and watercraft, especially since you've got an engineering background. I work in a marina, doing general "work" on rich peoples yachts. Today i took out a broken stove and replaced it with a new one. I work 8-10 hours a day, make pretty good money (not enough to make me rich, but enough to enjoy some of the finer things in life such as a dorm, uni, and druuuuugs),and the job never gets boring because i never do the same thing twice.

I can't say this with authority because I don't live in the US, but here in Aus you would definitely need more than that. In my experience, out of every 20 jobs that I applied for whenever I was looking for work, I probably heard back from 4-5 and maybe had an interview with 1.
Not saying this should discourage you, it's very doable, you just need to increase the quantity of applications. In aus we have sites like this, I'm going to assume that the US has similar things, maybe try looking on them when you have spare time in the evenings?

God, I almost died from laughing there, the imagination is just too funny (Borat somehow comes to mind). As a college side-job, I sometimes work at a production facility where fibreglass strings are produced. There are some Russians, Ukrainians and Kazakhs too and I found them to be such nice, hard-working and honest people. Also, they make me lol all the time because they play tricks on each other non-stop during work!

Ask friends and family. Apply and follow up on your apps - call them and ask if they've considered you after a few weeks. Let them know you want it and are willing to work hard for it.
At the interview throw everything you've ever done that may help you onto the table: earlier experiences, community organizing, sports coaching - anything that'll show you are a socially functional human being, who can make rational decisions. Also make sure YOU get the information you want: at the few job interviews I've been to asking into stuff like salary, hours, rights etc. will show you care and has usually helped me get jobs.
Don't be picky: apply everywhere if you're desperate, 100 places or more ideally. Not just the places that are actively looking for people, everything goes.
If you get job, work hard, don't lie (just don't) and be active. Join in if there's any social life going on and prove yourself to be a valuable employee.
GL with it.

Do this. And work full time. You're not in school. You need money. Working ft in a shitty job will make your ass get shit together for when you go back (speaking from experience)

Mass applying to any place that is hiring will not get you far. Just think how many other people are doing the same. The best and easiest way to get a job is through friends ask them if they are hiring where they work. And from there interview and then hopefully job. I've gotten all my jobs like this.
If you have no friends then you're screwed. :p

Wow I'm in the exact same situation as you lol

check out craigslist. also random places (especially medical centers) are looking for people to do data entry/filing. The work sucks, but my friend made 4k from working 40 hours a week for the entire summer.

You're not getting a job if you don't even try. Only experienced people can get a job by filling an application paper. You must go to the place you want to work in and ask for an appointment. ... if you wan't to work you need search for a job actively ;P

Just participate in some medical trials. In WA, we got this place called Charles River Labs where they pay you like $1,500 for a seven day trial. You take pills to see if they have any side affects before they're released to the public (they test them on lab animals before they can test it on humans). They once offered a trial that payed $7,500 for a 21-day trial. My co-worker did it all the time when he was between jobs. I did it once, but I got booted because I had the sniffles and had an elevated white blood cell count ... but they gave me $125 just for showing up!

My first job is ar McDonald's.

O shit. I want to do that!

look for something called "new generation" work. You just stand there and talk to people about a raffle then they fill out questionnaires at events around your area. It isnt a scam nor is it a telemarketing scheme lol. I get 10/hr to do it and its fucking EASY.
|
i've also applied to so many places this summer and no calls back yet. it's been about 2 weeks? blah, i'm probably gonna be looking into restaurants as well

A customer came into my work the other day and was telling me all about it and to sign up or something. Seems like some kind of Amway pseudo pyramid scheme thing.

My dad always said there is the rule of 3s when job hunting, for every 9 places you apply, 3 will call you back, and 1 will interview and hire you.
I wouldn't suggest a supermarket or a fast food place as the work is really tiring and annoying (customers and even bosses are dumb shits at this level of job). If you can, get a job as a waiter or maybe a telemarketer/sales where if you apply yourself you can actually make more money.
There are guide/tips for waiters to make more tips, same kind of sales techniques as anything really- selling yourself to the customer is what brings in the dough (no I don't mean prostitution).

pizzasss delicious. id work near some pizza

You had a lot more experience than me when I went to find a job. I had no volunteer or work experience. You have 4 years of hospital volunteer work. That should be fine, no? You're going to have to look at very entry-level stuff, like grocery stores or a fast food place.

most regular store like clothing store wouldn't give sh*t whether or not you applied on the web, on the spot, or on the streets (since they'll all forward them to the same spots to be reviewed anyways)
that being said, summer time is a good time to look for tutoring jobs if you have any subject you are confident in... also if you are over 18 you can get paid jobs in hospitals and your experience would help you out!

plus most ppl who do the trials r the ppl who do the other trails as well so the people who set it up know this and have already prepared for it.
but if you decide to do this and you don't feel like they know what they are doing, you can always just leave.
