My first year, I've slacked of ridiculous amounts and im definitely failing one of my exams, fortunately i should smash the rest (easily) I just have no particular interest in biol and I have literally no chance of passing at this stage... I guess I'll just do it again over the summer as luckily its not a pre-req to any of the subjects im doing in 2nd semester this year...

So yeah, just to make me feel better, everyone who's ever failed a uni subject please post here so i don't feel like such a failure at life . Subjects/stories welcome =]

Um.. I'm not sure how it works in Australia, but for American Universities, it's really not a big deal. The cons are you waste one class/time spent on it and it shows on your transcript. However, once you retake it the second grade "replaces" the previous grade GPA wise. Graduate schools won't really look too much into it.

The class I failed in was physics my first year. The class had a really great professor and the students were really bright. Unfortunately(or maybe fortunately) for me, I found my love for starcraft the semester before that. I discovered iccup, met some friends that kept me up, and my attendance plummeted. I think I missed about 2 months worth of class, out of a total of 4 months. Anyways, had to retake the class the following semester, realized I didn't want to major in physics, and got a B+ in it. I'm kind of sad it wasn't an A but oh well, done with that road. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's an experience nevertheless. You should be fine once you just put some effort into it. To a bio-filled summer.

That sir is fucking awesome.I was pissed when I didn't get a B in Bio 114 even though I was like 1-2 percentage points away. I hate when that shit happens, I ended up getting a C. I wasn't mad at the professor though. He was great.

Well I haven't failed a class yet in College. I did have to drop my remedial Math 99 this spring. I'm taking it again right now. Hopefully I pass this time. I have the mathematical capability of a 8th grader =/ My best advice is to buckle down, and just pass man.

I got 50 and 50 in my advanced calc 2 and linear algebra courses.

Pity passed since they were advanced hahaha. Even fell asleep during my algebra exam.

I feel some of your pain, there were 2-3 weeks where I was sure I failed.

Oh well, good experience and glad i did it now rather in 2nd or 3rd year... Time to knuckle down so i do good in my other subjects so this i at least have something to be proud of ;P

Sucks that you failed, but at least first year was great. I don't regret screwing around and not doing any work first year.

If you can scrape an ok score, I know melbourne uni has supplementary exams that you can take so you don't have to repeat the whole subject in summer, just retake the exam at a later date.

I was never the smartest guy in HS, but I made decent grades. Anyways, a friend of mine Allen, was one of the top math students in the state of Tennessee. He got a 31 on his ACT and we both went on to the University of Tennessee.

So our first year on campus, we was introduced to the wonderful world of fraternities(AKA sluts and beer). Basically that entire year, we did nothing but drink and fuck unattractive women(nice bodies and ugly faces, but not all were so bad)! Needless to say, we both flunked our first two semesters. We both got put on academic probation, so we figured we needed to clean our shit up. I stopped drinking, but Allen still drank until it made him fat, but only after he did his homework, lol.

Allen got his degree in engineering this year and I'm working towards my second degree. You failed one class and we failed an entire year, so don't worry my man! You're not alone .

I got on academic probation my first year at the uni (was year 3 since I transferred over) because I failed 3 classes that year. The second year I got a 3.7 GPA so it kind of evened itself out.

hahah Myst well done I screwed myself up pretty good 2nd year of school; freshman year was ok but sophomore year I just ran out of steam or something. barely scraped a C- in physics, failed calc outright, dropped another course... and that was only first semester lol. second semester I got unofficial withdrawals on 2 classes cuz I didn't show up enough, didn't finish a final project, and missed a final exam. all without the help of either sluts or booze! so yeah. I took this year off to sort things out, trying to transfer to another school. one F though? you have nothing to worry about my friend

I've failed 2 courses. Not even because they were especially difficult but because I was a fucking idiot.

Course #1: The final project seemed impossible to find research material for. I talked to my proff and she was like "wtf are you talking about? just check here, here and here, there should be loads of it". Problem is, I had already checked in the aforementioned places, to little avail. I pretty much just put it off, told myself I'd do it after I did all my other projects, then never did it.

Course #2: I should have just dropped this course by the withdrawl date. I missed a bunch of school due to several consecutive illnesses. My other courses were ok, I could catch up easily as they came naturally to me (poli sci / economics). This course was a human anthropology / evolution course with some biology in it (never even took bio in high school, did chemistry and physics instead). I fell behind, had my exams deferred until later in the year. Realizing that I could do this gave me no incentive to actually catch up until the very last minute. I actually studied very hard near the end of the term in the hopes of passing, but due to a miscommunication with the proff and gross laziness on my part, I thought certian marks were being deferred that actually weren't and even though I did fairly well on the final I still failed.

I was really, really afraid this would kill my gpa and fuck me over in the future, but just today I got accepted into the college I applied for anyway (didn't shoot TOO high, lol), so all is well. It's not like I'm rolling in money, so I wouldn't want to go to a prestigious institution until I'm working on a post-graduate degree anyway. I've just been trying to forge some mental discipline to get myself to REALLY put in maximum effort in the coming years.

I failed Elemental Statistics and Access Databases. The latter was because of a teacher from the last century with nosehairs down to her sagging breasts. Whenever she was about to explain something or answer a question, she'd just break off halfway through and mumble "Mkay, alright..." to herself.
Excuse me hun, but what is your name? Vivian? I woke up next to you naked and, uh, did we, um?

I failed a course in compilers and computation theory.
begged the lecturer for a resit.

Drank so much expresso that i puked at 3am in the morning.

Arrived at the resit 2 hours earlier cuz my brain was fucked from so much expresso + studying.

Passed 100%, but only recieved a pass on final grade because i failed the first time.

The thing i learned from this experience? There is NOTHING that a human mind can not do given enough caffeine.

what kind of system do you have in hungary? do you also have to switch to the bachelor/master nonsense in hungary? i would have guessed your system is/was similar to ours with Diplom etc.

What is wrong with the bachelors/masters system? Or, we do not really follow it, we still apply directly for a master here where I go, it is just that you get a bachelor in the middle of it while before you didn't graduate anything till the master.

Well, I failed two classes @ uni this semester, which was a shock since I was passing the class until I fucked up badly on the finals...which led me to dismissal.

I think if you fail a subject this semester you could retake it on top of your other subjects next semester or next year (whenever it's offered next) Otherwise, I don't really know how the whole thing works. Hopefully I never have to find out... Cruising for sevens in my first year of uni studying korean and japanese at the University of Queensland so far.

Failed one course out of 12 this year, too lazy to study, I was really disillusioned at the time due to having to travel 6 hours a day and not being able to find a room. Still, I should be ashamed because it was statistics which is really easy lol. Though I can do it over next year without any consequences so it doesn't really matter, better to fail and retake it with a good grade than pass with a 5.5/10 which fucks up my average.

Closest story I have to the ones I've read...

I was taking econ as a first-semester freshman. After the final I was told I have a B instead of an A. My professor and I started arguing back and forth in e-mail until one day I suddenly got an e-mail from my TA saying they had made errors grading the final and me, and a few others all had an increased course grade as a result... so I got my A.

Drop out of the course so it doesn't kill your GPA. If it's not a mandatory course, then you don't have to retake it.

I got a subject which I barely passed because of procrastination overload in doing assignments and studying. But I made it up in the subject's uh.. "sequel?" (Basically, <subject name> 2) with a high distinction. This was because I realized that that lecturer(who taught both those subjects) saw my potential but was just limited by procrastination and games so I felt indebted to her giving me pass(so I proved her right). After that, I just stayed with distinctions (while playing games XD). I guess I learnt time management and organization there. But in the end, my CGPA is like 2.9. I didn't realize this till later. So, yeah, I'm thinking maybe I should have failed that and do a retake but well, I have a job now atm anyway. Not as ideal but hopefully the CGPA thing will be negligible when I change jobs later.

the problem with aussie uni is that not all units are available during a semester. some of the units are only available the first half of the year.
it's not really that big of a deal for first years, don't fail any in third and second years tho.

I had community college physics instructor who gave ridiculously hard quizzes and tests. On the first day of the class (basic mechanics and electromagnetism courses that engineers and other science majors would take) they spend most of the lecture talking about how hard the course is. Only three or four people pass out of 30+. Ended up with a D in the mechanics and a C in electromagnetism, the worst grades I've ever had in college. Retook mechanics at another local community college and it was an easy A.

Once failed a psychology course (I can't even remember the course name, was a second year course)

I actually didn't mean to neglect the course, I was just focusing on other courses and kept procrastinating. Basically, the midterm crept up on me and I hadn't read anything or purchased a textbook yet, and had missed a lot of classes. Since the course was mostly just midterm and exam, (maybe a test somewhere in there) my odds of passing were extremely low, and I'd have to ace the exam, which I didn't have the time, energy, or patience for, and decided to cut my losses.

I'd like to say that because of this I stopped slacking, but I'm still not very disciplined. All about cramming for me, unfortunately.

the problem with aussie uni is that not all units are available during a semester. some of the units are only available the first half of the year.
it's not really that big of a deal for first years, don't fail any in third and second years tho.

Same in Canada. I had to plan out my last 2 years so I could actually take everything I needed/wanted to.

Btw, just so people know, an "EU C" is equivalent to an "US B" and "EU E" is like an "US C".

If you don't mind me asking, where did you take that physics course? Which was it? Who was the instructor, etc...

Some people at my university are very interested in this topic. If you don't mind, please pm me the details.

what kind of system do you have in hungary? do you also have to switch to the bachelor/master nonsense in hungary? i would have guessed your system is/was similar to ours with Diplom etc.

Yeah we kind of switched to that (not all kind of schools though, like in medical universities you still need 5 years to get a degree), except that I'm in the last class/year that is still the old system. People usually don't like the new way of things, mostly because it's chaotic sometimes, there are no worked out solutions/methods for a lot of things and partly because they think the education level got lower this way. (They accept more people nowadays, a lot of universities are going from elite to mass education.) My 5-year degree will probably worth more than a bachelor+master degree. Or so they say.
