I log into iCCup with the mindset of mass gaming, and accomplishing something this season. Despite it being the season, I felt I could at least beat a few people. After chilling for a bit, I finally join a game. I see the guy, and I see he's D+. The fact that it was this early in the season and that he was D+ didn't really click in my mind =\.
So I proceed to play one game. I get utterly raped. Completely and painfully. That sucked, but since it was ZvZ, I felt I could take at least one game from him. I rejoined, and got raped again. In frustration, I quit iCCup, and went on their website to see who I was actually playing.
I check his past ranks. A-. And then I look at current 1x1. He's #7. Ugh... I think I'm going to take a break from iCCup until the middle of the season so that I know who I'm playing =(.
Just waiting for the next Who is Who so I can know if I actually played anyone. Had a somewhat interesting conversation. He said he was Korean, I accused him of lying of his ethnicity, and he proceeded to explain something about corean vs korean, and then claiming 'I AM SUPER COREAN!"
=\.
UPDATE: I feel some pride in saying that I was 8% of the wins by the #1 person on iCCup right now.

If it's anything like last season you just need to wait like a week or so. It's really only the first few days that things are that bad.

For us D+ to C- newbies, the benefits are small at best -_- The most you can do is claim you played Savior and got raped miserably at D+ or something.

It would be pretty cool if you got to play a progamer :p

Let me tell you what I do
First, I prepare the ICCup site on my firefox Second, I go onto ICCup and create a game Third, someone joins, I say 'wait plz' and check out that user's info Fourth, if reasonable, play. If he's smurfing, ban.

You realise how lucky you are lol? This is the whole reason for playing early season! If you want to play scrubs, just go on USEast :S

I wish people would start to understand how little importance the rank has.. I mean, unless you are getting paid to reach a certain rank (this happens in some clans, I guess) what is the meaning of it? At that point you are just doing it to make yourself feel better, not to improve your game.

Ya Kondora, stats were banned so people stopped stat dodging. Now you just make the process take an extra minute ~_~ YOU should be the one smurfing if you're gonna play like that. Care less about your record

What some guy said earlier is correct though.
This is prime time for B- - B+ players to get in games with A players they normally wouldn't be able too and see how to improve. I can really see why a B player would love the beginning of the season.
Now for a D+ player... the benefits are blah at best. Mostly because even a C+ player is going to rape you abysmally and you have every B - Olympic player to deal with at the same time. Hell I hit C+ last season and I'm still getting my ass handed to me so much at D I feel like crying

Haha. This is what I do too. But I usually like vsing Semi pro gamers - pro gamers simply for the fact to play better.

I played 2 B- Koreans and one B+ Korean this morning and of course, I lost all 3(I played a 27 minute ZvP with the B-). One game, I got cheesed and the other two was standard.
I don't avoid Koreans or any other players better than myself, because I want to improve! I've been playing 1v1 less than a month, so I have alot of shit to learn. Also, why do people care about records? Personally, I don't give a fuck about my stats, as long as I'm learning and having fun, it's all good.
I went 5-6, after losing 4 straight.

There is a difference between a challenging game and a game where your opponent just has superior mechanics that no matter what they do they will still win.

Nah, it's completely reasonable. It's not the rating loss that's the issue, it's the difference of playing a fair game of starcraft, and getting owned so hard without being able to do ANYTHING because the other player has an apm 200 higher than yourself, superior mechanics and tight pro buildorders. I for one can't stand playing against players who are so much better than me, and I'm getting the impression that most ppl at my rank (D+ or so) feel the same -.-. I'd really like to play, but guess I'll just keep it at playing friends for the next week or two -.-.
|
Playing against better players will make you improve. I don't see why you would want to avoid better players and play against your friends.

This might be true. But I really play to have fun. I do not have fun getting assraped by B's, and to be honest, I don't think I learn anything by getting steamrolled. Imo, you'll only learn if you actually have a chance of winning (even though this chance can be little, like a D+ playing against a C). Else it's like watching a live replay of yourself getting owned. This is clearly subjective, but that's how I see it.
|
Well I also started checking for their stats before going. A lot of players at D / D+ that beat me was because they were higher ranked (B, etc.). It's not fun if you wanna get past D level and don't feel like getting owned.
|
Playing better players might make you improve, but when u lose like 10 games in a row its pretty frustrating and demoralising lol. Makes you want to smash your keyboard !
|
Sucking is pretty demoralizing. Beating sucky players worse than you shouldn't make you feel better. People gotta learn to improve through losses.

I'd rather play (maybe I didn't add this in, but I meant 'reasonable' as in 'people who are truly equally-skilled' ) a game where it goes back and forth, and I end up losing and then finding out my mistakes bit by bit and improve from there.
I wouldn't want to face some A+ smurf and get thrashed without knowing what just happened ~_~

I hope you have the replay and realize what he did better than you.. It's a fucking amazing opportunity to see how somebody way above you plays.

I tend to analyze my own mistakes first but idk if that's effective. That's just how I learn though

Playing a progamer can be cool novelty wise, like "omg I played Reach on iccup, now my penis is larger", but I don't know how much you could actually improve from it.
Like, you play some A+ Korean, and get raped. And then you go look at the replay to see what he did right/you did wrong. Are you expected to go, "Well, his macro is twice as good as mine, so he rolled over me. I guess I need to improve my macro? I never knew this ever." after watching the replay?
Maybe if they did a strategic play you haven't played against before, or are uncomfortable playing against, I can see how it helps, but in alot of cases it just seems like the reason you lost would be common sense. "Scout for proxies next time" or "improve macro".
