Yeah, WoW has very low minimum requirements, but certain parts of the game and higher video settings have pretty high system requirements.

Wow. I can't believe you play WoW >_> You should have rephrased it to "Is this computer good to play STARCRAFT2?!?"
I can't say I'm a fan of yours now

I can't remember who it was, but someone suggested this in another recent thread: xoticpc.
Edit: Oops, the resolution isn't what you want. =/ Offered resolutions are 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

Ok, I had some time to think it over and I think Nony would never do this to us...

Whoa...calm down everyone. Tyler is actually helping me (his fiancee) with this post. I'm the one looking for a new laptop that will be able to run WoW. I just figured he would be able to get better responses than I would had I been the one asking for advice. Thank you to those of you who have provided some recommendations. And for those of you freaking out, don't worry, Tyler still loves you.
The two laptops I had been going between were the HP HDX16t and the Dell Studio XPS 16. Neither of these offer top of the line graphics cards though, so I was hoping to hear some more insight as to what types of graphics cards would be good enough to play HD movies and run WoW decently. The main reason I was looking at the 16" was because the 17" just seems so much bigger. I have a 15.4" right now, and I'm afraid the 17" will be too big of a jump up for me and will be bulky when I do take it to class with me. I will definitely check out the notebookreview site though, so thanks for that rec.

Fiancee? Congrats, Tyler!
If you're moving the computer around a lot and using it on-the-go (not just office workspace and home workspace) go for the 16 inch. I agree that the difference in size seems pretty large. Look at the weight as well.
Bigger is better, unless you need it to be small

I'm shopping laptops too ATM and some of your requirments are almost impossible:
-16"-17" screen weighting 6-7 pounds is impossible, especially if you wanna have a good gaming laptop. You'll probabaly get something anywhere between 8-10 pounds.
My suggestion:
http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598056.php
It's pretty much the cheapest laptop with those awesome specs, the only things it lack is a blu-ray reader and you may not like the design(check images on google for the back of it, it's awful)
And another site for reviews: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/laptop-reviews.aspx

This.
The best price/performance laptops come from Gateway and Asus right now. I'm pretty satisfied with my Gateway FX6860, but I don't put too much strain on it. For WoW, I'd worry more about CPU speed than the video card (as long as it's a 8800 or better) and make sure you've got 4GB of ram.

I don't think they have fixed memory leak for x86 yet so you probably don't need four gigs of RAM.

Isn't WoW supposed to run fine even on cheap comps ? o,o

Yea, I had heard this before, but I'd really like to play on more than just the lowest settings. I'm not expecting to be able to play on max setting either, but I was hoping that the mid-range graphics cards would be able to play somewhere in the middle at least.
As far as the weight goes, the Dell 16" starts at 6.4 lbs (the laptopmag review that one of you directed me to has it at 6.8 lbs), and the HP 16" is 7.37 lbs. The 17" do go up a bit, but I was able to find a 17" from ibuypower for 7 lbs, and the HP dv7 starts at 7.74 lbs. So it's obviously possible to stay under 8 lbs, which is what I was hoping.
I had actually looked at the Asus laptops through newegg. There was one 15" that had good specs and was in my price range, but the design was just gross; Tyler even said he wouldn't let me buy it.
There's also a 17" from ibuypower called Battalion 101 LX-795 that has pretty good parts for the price, but the resolution only goes up to 1600x900. Any of you know how much of a difference you can actually see between the 1600x900 and 1920x1080?

How about Thinkpad W500 with WUXGA? That's 15" 1920x1200 resolution.
Why do no body else recommend thinkpads? seriously...... they are the best and it's built like a brick. And they have the best keyboard in the business.

i recommend ACER laptops, they have done me very well in the past, reliable and VERY good and intelligent price-performance. that is all i have to offer im afraid

i recommend quitting WoW for SC, because you can hold out on NonY until he gets you to ballerdom

1600x900 = 1440000 19200x1080= 2073600
So a considerable amount of increase in pixels, in most games it would make a huge difference in the image quality and smoothing out edges in graphics. However having played WoW myself, I would say those extra pixels will not be doing anything special in terms of graphical quality since WoW's graphics are pretty low detailed.
|
1920x1080 in a 17" computer = super tight PPI meaning you'll have to adjust the native PPI to be probably around 90 or 110 instead of 72 or font will be super ass small.

Well the logic is that It's Television and Movie format so why not keep it consistent.
Maybe website layout will change to be more horizontal in the future with a omni-direction scroll ball instead of a up and down easy left to right impossibly annoying scroll wheel.

No, the logic is because it's cheaper to produce those stupid resolutions since they keep cutting off pixels and consumers are so dumb, they're like, "OHHH WIDESCREENS SO GUD!"
WELL NO! It's not good. In fact, it sucks. I want more space, especially vertical space, to do stuff on my computer. God dammit.

The Thinkpad W500 is a little over 6 pounds but maybe it could be more with a bigger battery... not so sure. And you can find it within your budget on eBay.

if you're rejecting sxps16 based on the fact that you think 3650 isn't enough, then you're probably looking at NP5793 as one of your ideal choices. the main downside of that laptop is that with battery, the weight tips in at a fairly heavy 8.3 pounds. then again, if you were ok with 7.7, you clearly don't need a very portable laptop
aside from that, let's go down your list it's a 17", check. WUXGA native, check (unless you specifically want 16 : 9 and not 16 : 10?) can play wow with decent settings? scale up the base to a T9300, and with the gpu, you should have 0 problem anywhere in wow 6-7 pounds, that's a fail. 8.3 with battery. plain look, no alienheads or glowing plastic here. just an oj accent, similar to lenovo's new ideapads bluetooth, check 1200-1500, check (after the T9300 scaleup you're looking at about a 1300 price range)
here's the thing though -- you want a good gaming laptop and you want to use it in class. i hope you realize gaming laptops run pretty loud in general.
and really, 3650 can't handle WoW? I find that hard to believe. if you think a 3650 might be enough, you can CTO a sony FW which is a 16 : 9 resolution like you asked, a 16.4" screen, so not as huge as 17's (although you were considering the HP HDX16? that thing's like a tank, got a footprint of a frickin' yeti and weighs ~10 pounds with ext battery), and configures pretty decently, i think about $1200
like others have said, make a post on NBR, someone will give you some tips. although a 6-7 pounder 17" with something significantly better than 3650 would be pretty hard to find imo

WoW is pretty much all about CPU speed. It's such an old shitty engine. The Gateway® P-7805u FX Edition, like someone else linked, seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. Although it doesn't meet some of the requirements.
My brother played WoW at 60fps (most places) with a 9600gt on some terrible mac. Remember the graphics card isn't important, It's all about the CPU clocks!

few of my friends have picked up the costco laptop @ $900 and they have run WOW/BF2 at highest settings with great FPS.

If you are going to get something that big why not just build yourself a desktop? i don't get the point of desktop replacement laptops.

On May 01 2009 20:51 haduken wrote: If you are going to get something that big why not just build yourself a desktop? i don't get the point of desktop replacement laptops. I pretty much say this every time someone wants a gaming laptop. They get uncomfortably warm, you end up never wanting to bring them anywhere anyway, most people destroy their own batteries by using it plugged in without storing them somewhere, They are noisy thanks to the poor ventilation, they are heavy as shit. 8 lbs sucks dick when you are carrying other things as well. And all that for less performance than a desktop you could have bought for half the price gives you. Not to mention the comfort and wrist pain you save yourself using a real keyboard and a real monitor.
Also consider how hard they are to fix or upgrade on your own. Desktop supremacy
Or what, you're going to play wow in public? Please don't do this. I'm sure everyone in college here can tell you the type of person who does that.
Not to mention Nony is being an enabler here getting a laptop that can run a horrible soul stealing game

Sartre is a very good philosopher, but I do believe that de Beauvoir has more convincing ethics. Sartre simply gets stuck inside his own consciousness and cannot give any directions as to where we should head.

I agree, this is stupid. In fact, I think the ideal Laptop would be the SquareTop(c), with a resolution of 1920x1920.
All I have to say is, question whether you really need a humongous laptop. If you're going to be gaming and/or watching movies all over the place, I guess I can see it. But if you're mostly going to be set up in one place, you might want to get a smaller laptop (but still a powerful laptop), and use a docking station/real monitor/keyboard.
If you want the big screen on a laptop though, also watch for whether the screen in question is TN or IPS. Cheap screens are TN, and have viewing angles of 160 degrees. I doubt anyone would recommend a TN screen for watching HD movies, so be careful on that..

Well i play WoW on my Mac powerbook with 60 fps with Ventrilo, Firefox, IrC and msn open. My sons Dell laptop was not able to do that even they said it should be fine, the problem was mostly overheating so it started to lag or to switch off. the 17´´ got 1920x1200 but i am not sure if you want to invest that much money
|
^ Well, it's kinda unfair to compare a mac with a dell >.<
|
maybe it's a really nice expensive dell
|
from personal experience i would recommend a hp 8710w (the t9xxx and quadro 3600m version), great specs, very profesional looking design (not a toy).
or a thinkpad t61p / w500
|
if you are going for a high end laptop id strongly advise not going SLI in a laptop, just take a look at laptopvideo2go.com to see the problems they cause. on my dell xps m1730 much more trouble than its worth.
good luck!
edit: if you are taking this thing to class make sure you check the weight on some of these beasts, the top end are 'desktop replacements' and thus really heavy.
