Im a big fan of anime!! Started watching like 3 years ago so im making this blog so that someone will give me new stuff to watch according to my personal taste and at the same time i can recommend some of my favorite animes to you anime fans.
My first ever anime i downloaded was Hellsing and i really enjoyed it and was hooked on anime after this.
My Personal best list would be :
Death Note Monster Code Geass Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Hellsing OVA Elfen Lied Berserk One Piece ( Although i watch Naruto and Bleach for some wierd reason i dont like them dunno why t.t)
Others that i like but not great as above: Neon Genesis Evangelion Ergo Proxy Claymore GTO Detroit Metal City FLCL Golden Boy Gantz FMA Black Lagoon Vampire Knight Hajime no Ippo Wolfs Rain
Ok for end I would like to recommend one great OVA series that just watched it today.
Rorouni Kenshin OVA( Or Samurai X : Trust and Betrayal )
This just blowed me away compared to the original series which i tried to watch but stoped at episode 10 or so cuz was too boring for me and too much childlish. This goes definately to my top anime list.
Definately a must watch even if you dont like the original series like myself.

Watch the newest Gundam series, all worth it. (Gundam Seed / Destiny and Gundam 00)
|
Your taste and mine don't seem to match very well, but I think you might like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.
|
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan!!
|
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I guarantee that if I didn't bring it up someone within the next 5 posts would. you can't go wrong here.

Watch Hikaru no Go and FLCL owns
I like short animes, not animes that span 5000 episodes with damn fillers
|
I'm just going to throw out some titles that aren't on your list... not really thinking about them in terms of what you already like.
Shion no Ou
Hunter X Hunter
Last Exile
Jigoku Shoujo and both other seasons
Gintama
Law of Ueki
Edit: Akagi.
Edit: These are all some of my favorites, so it's not like I'm choosing random ones off of some list or something.

This. and yay for code geass! that was an amazing anime

Has anyone ever actually finished Monster? Seriously, it'd be good, but there's so many garbage do nothing episodes that you lose track of the plot and stop caring. How many times do we need episodes dedicated to explaining 'yeah, Tenma is a pretty nice guy.'
Anyways, you're missing Baccano!
|
Trigun was not bad School rumble is good comedy The first part of tenjou tenge is straight up great fighting I heard Eureka 7 was good but didn't really look into it (supposed to have good char development)
I haven't watched anime in a long time but if I remember anything else I'll post.
edit: oh yeah there are a lot of "melancholy of haruhi suzumiya" fans. I watched it and it wasn't bad but... I think it depends on what you're into. And also... Initial D if you're into cars
edit 2: oops sorry dm47, you already covered that one haha

Cool thx for your recommendations gonna check Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya . Never even heard of theese animes hope they are good !!
|
|
recommend gundam 00 but not seed, unless you like emo

I finished Monster. I enjoyed it a lot actually. The pace is definitely on the slower side, so I don't recommend it to everyone. However, the benefit of having a slower pace is that the character development is good, which adds depth to the story.
My top recommendation for the OP is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. If fast-paced ridiculous action is your cup of tea, this is the series to watch.

Blasphemy.
Well, maybe not about the anime (never watched it) but the manga is one of the best ever, probably Top 5, and i have heard that the anime follows it closely.
To the OP, your taste really is all over the place, so its kinda hard to recommend something specific, plus you seem to know most of the good anime in recent years. But you should really try Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, no other first episode in an anime ever has captivated me in such a way.
You should really watch it, specially if you have no idea what the show is about and you watch it alone, at midnight with the lights off xP.
|
I dont care how long it is, just as long as there is a badass quality to it. Recoms: Sword of the Stranger, Akira Spriggan Gun Grave, but only the part b4 it gets cliche Karas
edit: forgot Basilisk
Out of ur list: Kenshin Ova, NGE, FLCL, Death Note( first season only)
New season of FMA may be good depending on whether or not they acutally follow manga line.
|
darker than black is great. as ppl said b4, gundam 00 is really good as well.
|
I just finished Season 1 of Code Geass, its excellent.
If anyone really liked Death Note, Id reccomend Code Geass.
|
I'm a Dragonball fanboy! Best anime ever! I love screaming, halfnaked men!
|
Hope you people mean Code Geass S1, cause S2 is the definition of shit, the only ending worse to an otherwise quality anime is Claymore. This is S2 episode in a nutshell: http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?t=421031
Casshern Sins is nice if you can stand it. Gundam 00 S1 is good, S2 once again a letdown (not big but definitely not up to expectations) and felt more like Seed (which is never a good thing). Eureka 7 has good character development in the sense that the two main characters are completely unlikable and makes you want to quit watching at the beginning and then develops into something worthwhile, so bear that in mind when you first start watching. Macross Frontier is pretty mediocre. Planet ES is up there. Ruorini Kenshin OVAs are as solid as they come. Texhnolyze/Serial Experiment Lain if you can work through it all. Last Exile is really a quality series.
There is nothing really great recently, Casshern Sins is so-so because it drags with the story at times.

I like a lot of the ones u liked. You should try. These aren't in any order just what came to mind.
Ghost in the shell(2nd gig? Anyway this was really good and one that most people usually agree was good) D.Grayman( Kinda naruto/bleachish which u seemed to not like) Soul Eater ( hated the ending but meh was good until then) Hunter X Hunter ( dunno why i loved it but if it still came on i would def still be watching) Tenjo Tenje(however u spell it) Historys Strongest disciple kenichi( was entertaining enough) Hikaru no Go( SO SO SO GOOD. Biggest suprise ever imo thought i would hate it) Hijjame no ippo( spelling might be wrong but same concept as hikaru no go just boxing) YuYu Hakusho( one of my old school favs.. kl
|
well im 3 episodes from finished with season 2 of code geass but i really don't think it's that bad I do think season 1 was better but really, to me, it's a lot like death note in comparisons of season 1 and season 2.

Here you go, if you have never seen this anime i higghhlyy recommend it. The storyline is sick, very unpredictable! Plus the quality is HD so take advantage of it!!

"English dub" and "awesome" don't go together.
Like... "Zerg" and "easy to play".

The only exception I can think of is for Howl's Moving Castle...there the English dub (which featured an all star fucking cast) was absolutely amazing...just as good as the Japanese dub, except for Calcifer...believe it or not I preferred the English VA (Billy Crystal).

FUCK ENGLISH DUB. It gives off such a different vibe than the japanese original. Seriously, take a year or two and learn Japanese so that you can better appreciate anime. So many nuances of meaning are lost in translation/tone.
and if you want quality anime and not just the filler/entertaining/B-rate/DBZ/Naruto/Bleach animes, check out the award winners:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Media_Arts_Festival
Personal Recommendation: Dennou Coil is often undermentioned, its got a really rich and well developed universe and some dark themes lurking behind what seems to be an afterschool cartoon.
Mushishi is a series of short artsy episodes that embrace and builds on traditional japanese myths and supersittions. I think it has a touch of shinto-ism and a general "embrace nature" theme. Its also got the structure of doctor tv dramas: think House MD curing people.
And a note regarding Haruhi: Dont watch episode 00 first. It is a movie created by the anime characters and it makes no sense whatsoever when you first watch it. THE REST OF THE ANIME IS NOTHING LIKE IT. It foreshadows some of the events to come in the main anime and contains a boatload of inside jokes. It might even turn you off the anime. Instead, watch ep 01 through to the end and then go back and watch ep 00. If on the other hand, you are patient enough, by all mean go ahead and watch it first.
|
I recommend an anime film called 5 Centimeters Per Second, if only for the beautiful visuals and music (although there's more to it than that). Make sure you get a high quality version to watch. The director Makato Shinkai has been called "the next Miyazaki" and it's easy to see why. However, Miyazaki's themes tend to be man's desire for technological progress and the subsequent environmental cost, as well as the cost to human traits. Shinkai's themes are more about loneliness and love affecting life.

Well as long as you watch 00 and 01 right afterwards it's fine. Actually the series is so short anyway you might as well watch it twice (maybe not immediately afterwards). There's plenty of that "doesn't make sense until later" stuff going on. I have watched it 6 times ~.~

Also supporting votes for Gungrave and Basilisk

You're referring to dubs, but..
I can almost guarantee you that a year or two of japanese will fail you when it comes to really getting the meaning of things. Most people won't get far enough in that time. Literal translations are often wrong translations.
It's certainly better to be able to understand it in the native language. But you should still get the subs from the good groups(e.g. eclipse) and not second guess them. Also hard to discern what groups are actually good groups when you have limited experience(numerous times I've seen people basing their choice of subber basically off of font or timing, and proceeding to call it quality when their t/l is off compared to another group).
/rant I guess

It's funny this topic should come up so soon after I watched both seasons of Code Geass. Yeah, I share some of the views seen in this thread. When I was watching the first season, I was absolutely absorbed by it (I watched it all in one sitting ), and towards the last few episode, I kept going to myself "Oh, fuck that." "Ok, that episode sucked" "Noooooooooo" and so on. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it all.
Next day I find season 2, and once again, was completely absorbed by it. Then the same thing happened. A couple episodes near the end, I found myself hating what was happening. Though, I must say, even if the episodes leading up to it sucked, the very end was satisfactory in my eyes, even if it wasn't an ending I was truly hoping for.
On a side note, I honestly doubt it will ever happen, but am I the only one that would enjoy a new season/spin off of this series, maybe set a couple hundred years in the future? Definitely wouldn't be the easiest thing to do, since they tied everything off so nicely, and all but one or two of the characters would be dead, but one can dream, right? >.>

Ghost in the Shell( Watch them all).

Cowboy Bebop dub > sub Battle of basically Hayashibara Megumi being amazing vs Steve Blum being his godly self. Spike doesn't feel as great in Japanese.
Digimon Adventure dub > sub obvious one.... except mimi and izzy.
-- lol@railxp. Don't listen to him. Watching 0 first sets up literally the entire (actual) plot of the series... granted it exaggerates, but otherwise, yeah. Besides, considering that a) the end of the ep tells you it's a student film, and that b) in that context it's actually amazingly well-done, ep 0 becomes great, hilarious in its own way. A true Haruhist appreciates all orders of airing, be they broadcast, DVD, or otherwise.

@errol: yeah with 1/2 yr of jap you still need subs to understand stuff. Subs are all fine and good, just the english voices get on my nerves and i honestly cannot understand how people tolerate them. The only possible exception is cowboy bebop, where i have to admit the english dub is much better than most dubs, but i'd still insist the original is the best.

haha of course as a die hard haruhi fan i loooove the episode, i only give this advice because its the most effective advice i've used for converting more people to join the haruhi fanclub. Too many times i've had friends watch ep00 and be like WTF IS THIS LAME SHIT >=( and then they stop watching then and there , which doesnt do the anime justice at all.

Seems like you watch shounen anime so you got pretty much the big mainstream ones but missed Hikaru no Go (HIGHLY Recommended) Same mangaka as death note, i think, but it is an amazing story.
Lots of the anime I recommend had already been mentioned so good luck.

Death Note and Hikaru no Go were created by the same person?
That's... really surprising.
|
They were drawn by the same person but he worked with different writers
|
Anime and manga should really have dedicated writers. Death Note and Hikaru No Go has such better writing than like 90% of what is out there.
And everyone should try to watch at least one Miyazaki film. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away or even Kiki is good. It's nothing like regular anime so you might not like it.
|
Why hasn't anyone mentioned Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu?
Try to look for Tenjou Tenge Scanlations but I think they removed it everywhere.
The ending of Code Geass S1 was a great cliffhanger and the first few episodes of Season 2 got me hooked good. The ending of S2 was just so good, I was wondering what would happen since: + Show Spoiler +he was the emperor of the world then there was still one episode.

Black Cat and FUll Metal Alchemist are pretty good.

I can't see how watching it in chronological order during your first exposure to haruhi can give you as good a watch as broadcast order. Watching it in chronological order gives you a "omg this is awesome" feeling up till episode 6 finishes (the finale), but then it goes downhill from there. It'll feel like a 6 episode OVA followed by random shorts like lucky star. Theyre still funny and all, but broadcast order is so much better for the first time watching it. You get funny episodes throughout the series, a buildup, suspense, and an actual overarching storyline that concludes with one of the best endings ever. After watching it in broadcast order should you watch it in chronological order to understand the story better. Episode 6 is supposed to be the finale (and it does a damn good job being one), dont watch it halfway through the series!! (the first time youre watching haruhi)
and for a random anime rec: candy boy. twincest yuri ftw

gotta say, this is really weird but also pretty hilarious at times overall im not sure whats going on but i think i like it.

Bumping this thread to get some advice!
I've not really been a person who has had the time to watch a ton of anime's, as work has allways taken up to much time but now things have changed and because of a an leg injury im now in a position where free time is abundent.
So i've finaly decided to pick up some of my old hobby's (anime's is one of them) but i simply cannot find a sereis that interrests me thus far, out of the few ive looked though here so im hopeing someone can peg me in the right direction.
What i've seen and liked: (and why) Dragonball (First thing i saw after watching Akira at a very young age) Dragonball Z (Started with Z right after, but havnt watched it again in what.. 10years?) Death Note (Story & Charecters, plus the idea behind the book is just something i dig) Hikaru no Go (Started out watching it because of the Game, ending up staying because of the charecters) Hajime no Ippo (Great all around fighting adversity story, charecters drew me in and im a sucker for the guy who has to battle the impossible to get on top .. ala DBZ/Naruto/Bleach) Akagi (picked it up a few years back at random from a site, and the supense made it a favorit of mine) Naruto (Same as Hajime no Ippo) Bleach (Same as Hajime no Ippo) Ghost in the Shell 1&2SAC (I love the idea of the future they have in the GiTS universe, i've allways enjoyed stuff like StarTrek as a very casual viewer of the movies and such, and its the same that pulls me in here... Sci-Fi ish thingys... stuff)
I've most likely forgot more than a few ive seen over the years but well.. anywho' hope someone can bail me out here' because i tryed to watch Monster lately (allways wanted to) but im thus far kinda disapointed as there seems to me to be alot of filler episodes in between everything and at times im strugeling to stay interrested.

Gurren Lagann will put some hair on your chest. Great anime.
Also, on the topic of dubs, not all dubs suck. Like for example, Yu Yu Hakusho was a very good dub, Robotech was done very well (even though Robotech technically is more of a Frankenstein than a dub).
