The first episode kinda surprised me in that it didn't do anything in terms of story or character development; it felt like I was watching a filler. In the second episode, a lot of shit was condensed, and as a result, it lacks the poignancy and emotional impact of the early episodes in the first series. I was hoping that this series would redo the events that transpired in the FMA movie which I didn't like at all. I didn't read the manga but everyone keeps telling me it's better than the original anime; well, I hope it translate better on screen.

Which is precisely why I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a re-boot? I just can't help making comparisons and nostalgia always win out. Doesn't help that the original was already so good, it's like, why redo a good thing.

Funny thing is, I can't seem to recall how the series ended. Maybe that's a sign that I didn't like it much; I know I didn't like the movie.

Everything is condensed, as that audience would already have seen the events before, and there are subtle references to things to come that people who haven't read the manga wouldn't get, in particular + Show Spoiler + The kingdom of Xerxes and Rentanjutsu from Xing On April 13 2009 07:22 Spike wrote: Yea, obviously, knowing things this time around sucks and kills a lot of the impact. Also, you're being unfair to the reboot, seeing as the series hasn't gotten to where the events actually differ. The first season only really tapered off in quality toward the end, so you'll probably have to wait till sometime + Show Spoiler + after Greed dies

For people who haven't watched the first series, many would be confused and not as pulled in as otherwise. And for those who did watch the original, the first episode had no real punch (it was certainly new, but was it good? felt very fillerish/episodic and not in a good way) and the second was a poor rehash imo. They tried to strike a balance but I don't think it works for either audience. If you haven't read the manga, and if they pace this right, you should reach unfamiliar territory soon enough. Hope you're right. Although, I think the pace could definitely put off the uninitiated. But I suppose most people who watch this will have already watched the first series.

True, except there are two things to keep in mind: 1) Its not like the first season didn't have filler. I can think of at least 5-6 episodes that didn't really contribute strongly to the plot or character development. 2) Its a poor rehash, but its one that needs to be done. They can't just not do it. Dragging it out over more episodes might be over the top, though doing the flashbacks anecdotally over several episodes might have been a better option.
