Coach = Coach Lee Jae Gyeun of WoonJin
Caster = Caster Lee SeungWon of MBC

Coach: Did you eat much?

Caster: Yea.

Coach: I sound as if I bought the food.

Caster: Hehe

Coach: Thanks for the food.

Caster: Nice (team/practise)house you've got. When did you move here?

Coach: November 4th, last year.

Caster: Everything's brand new here including the building, such fitting environment to practise.

Coach: (Nodding head in agreement.) Inside the draft room. I still remember... Players would flat out refuse to be drafted by Hanbit. (Caster: So I heard) During the draft... there were players I really wanted to draft, but had to give up.
That hurt me, and even became a grudge... So I made a promise to myself. If our team ever change, then I will make an environment where any players can practise.

So this is the very first thing I said to the new company(WoonJin), "Without proper/fair environment/salaries... we have no future. No chance... Please do not even attempt to start a team without it." Fortunately for us, Woonjin gladly accepted these terms. As far as I know, our team have the best environment to practise overall.

And our top team... I'll never forget Free[gm]. So many insults were thrown on the internet, how Free[gm] was getting ripped off with his infinitely lowest salary.

Caster: Yea, I saw them too. His pictures with "I want to eat meat... etc".

Coach: Looking at them, I wanted Free NEVER to suffer that embarrassment again. I made sure, even compared to ANY TOP Ace player in other teams, Free[gm] will not be behind. I made it certain.
He knows... As much as I did my best to provide him, I told him, he needs to do his best for the team in return. It depends on him whether he wants to increase his salary from this point on.

Caster: Can you name me one of the players, excluding Free, GGPlay, and Zero, who you think will be the 'next-big-thing'? A player you have a high expectation?

Coach: Yes, Neo.G Soulkey, zerg player. In practise ranking... Well, practise ranking doesn't always prove right, but I have this mindset, "do well during the practise, you'll have chance to shine." At one point, Soulkey was about to be kicked out of the team because he was so bad. But when the coaches began to teach him to be better, he suddenly became one of the top five in our ranking.

Caster: So will we see him in proleague anytime soon? Soulkey?

Coach: For him to do well in proleague... He has to wait at least 6 additional months after I say this.

Caster: Ahh, I understand. You still need polish and elaborate him before he's finished. Just like Zero! Only very recently, this changed. In the practise, he was very good. However, in broadcast match, he always start well, but end up losing.

Coach: Zero... was affected by GGPlay the most. Zero was a player who received no attention from the coaches. I admit, we only accepted him because of his physical/apm. During his tryout, he lost all games except for one. Even afterward, he was so bad, we kicked him out of the team. But we eventually accepted him back, but only because GGPlay left to CJ and we had no zergs. Zero today is only possible because of the... 'pressure mode'.
We pressured him, "You better know the responsibilities you have on your shoulder." We gave him a lot of pressure as well as the leniency due to it. And now he made a name for himself.

Nice translation
They seem pretty harsh to their players, kicking out and then re-accepting
But good to see that they've done quite well this season

It's rather funny that of all Woonjin players, GGplay's the only one with the title...

I agree, if I were Zero I would be pretty angry haha, but I guess being in a proteam is better than no team at all.

Wow, I really like this interview because it shows the ridiculous brutality of coaches and the internal team structure.

Poor Zero, that kind of pressure must be painful to bear.

Zero did used to be pretty bad though...I remember a season ago any front page article on TL would call him the worst player in this league blah blah blah.

Nice about free though. I wondered if they sorted out tome kind of Xellos deal cause of how much he gave up for the team. Guess they kidna did.

I think some of you are misinterpreting this kind of behavior as normal among proteams (and maybe it is these days, I don't know), but Lee Jae Kyun has been a coach since the earliest days of progaming and he was a real pioneer for e-Sports coaches. He refused to use an assistant coaches (until recently) and he did things like force his players to walk home from the studio if they lost a televised game and he treated the players who did the best with the harshest routines. Of course, for a person as dedicated as he is, he became both loved and hated in the Korean scene. Loved because of how many times he's willing to break his own back for his players and hated because of that exact same stubborn attitude.

He's called the Guus Hiddink of e-Sports and, to me, he's the best coach to ever be involved in StarCraft.

so apparently free had one of the lowest salaries of progaming due to hanbit being cheap? damn, that's gotta suck if you're the ace for your team. nice to see that zero used to be quite bad before rising to the zerg semi-star that he is now. that leaves me hope with players like piano, stats, and hoejja. who knows, maybe some scrub right now may be the next bonjwa.

Also funny how GGplay is one of their top players in terms of name, since he is quite average player.

Heheheh I love reading all your posts about the Stars. It's good stuff.

And thanks for the translation FConnectionUK. It's seems so rare to see a Stars interview translated; it's a great change from the usual stuff.

I'm surprised ZerO actually stuck around after being kicked out. He really is making a name for himself. If he wins MSL, it would just be insane.
From being one of the worst Zerg pros to an MSL title holder. That just sounds great.

Awesome translation. Thanks.

It's so sad to hear about Free like this. He's one of those players that deserves so much more and tries so hard for his team. Reminds me of Totti, stays with the team no matter what, even if he could be making much more money, and he plays with heart.

Just to clarify (since I barely watch any WL games, much less any WJ Stars games), the Coach in this is that skinny guy that always wore the K-Swiss hat when Stars was still with Hanbit, right? I always felt so bad for him because he was the only coach back then that would wear his team colors (instead of a suit, like the heads of other more successful teams), but would always be faced with losses etc :[.

Well considering players like Soulkey can improve so much with coaching help, a coach who refuses to use assistants for so long obviously fails at his job. Treating players harshly and putting so much pressure on them often times has the opposite effect of what was intended. They feel like they have to succeed *now*, and if they don't they lose all confidence. Many of these newer players are just kids, some not even in high school yet.

HanBit was one of the strongest proteams in the history of progaming and Lee Jae Kyun has produced a series of Starleague winners (which is known as the Jae Kyun Line in the Korean community). So what if his methods look harsh? They worked.

You're joking right?
Korean children/students as well as other children in asian countries are a lot tougher than children in Euro/American nations.

The pressure to do well in school permeates all aspects of their lives
At home, they are not fed unless they do well in school
They attend school and additional acadamies for 14+ hours a day
A common maxim in korean in "if you study untill 4 (in the morning) you will go to university, but if you study untill 3 you will no"

Some of these players work best under pressure,
Just becuase you and many others cant deal with the heat does not mean others cannot

And the Coach of Hanbit is KNOWN in the pro community for being a kickass coach
From hanbit came such stars such as NaDA, Reach, Boxer, Yellow, IntotheRainbow
