Disclaimer: + Show Spoiler +
By reading this blog, you acknowledge the fact that whenever I use strong language or seem to be aggressive or hostile, I'm more than likely just trying to be funny. I love words, and swears are the spice of any language.

Whore is my favorite. It's got a nice woody quality to it. Whoooore...

OK so apparently today thepiratebay.com went to court in Sweden, I think, I don't get alot of news over here. But the legal thing aside...

What's your stance on filesharing? I just had a fairly educated discussion with one of my friends about it, and I thought I'd ask the good people of TL what they think, feeling good when I get agreement, feeling stupid when I get contradicted and feeling apathetic when some liberal-arts-stoner-reject who only read the disclaimer writes a lengthy reply about the negative impact swearing has on suburban children.

My friend is pro-pirate. I am anti-stealing. If you download shit off the internet without paying the author, you're a thief, end of story. I download shit off the internet, but at least I don't get all self-righteous about it, spouting some retarded propaganda about free information. I steal, I am morally ambiguous, I don't do as I teach, I have no principles, I. AM. BEOWULF!

There was an episode of Southpark that touched on this. Because filersharers downloaded artist's music for free, they could only afford semi-luxury, a jetplane without a remote control for the dvd system, stuff like that. This is one of the first places pro-pirates tend to go, the artists will get money from concerts, so its OK to steal their albums. Am I the only one who think this is a less than not completely retarded argument? What would the pirates' excuse be if they could download concert tickets as well?

Another argument is that it's OK to steal from them because they're rich. These artists make more in a month than "regular" people make in several years. Obviously, if everyone stole their music this wouldn't be the case. You think it's unfair that they have more money than you when you work 50 hours a week at a dead-end deskjob? Well tough shit, if you think it's so rosey being an artist why don't you stop spending your pitiful paycheck on beer and weed and go embarrass yourself on american idol? Becoming an artist is like playing the lottery, you either make it or you don't, its high risk, you played it safe and think you should get to steal their work because the few who made it make more money than you?

What if you didn't try to become an artist yourself because you chose to get a career you actually cared about? Again, tough shit, the world isn't fair and unfortunately what you care about isn't as lucrative as the entertainment industry. If doing what you love is more important to you than bitches and money then shut up and set your alarm to 6:30 like the spineless corporate prostitute we both know you are.

Getting back to filestealing, it's not even alot of money we're talking about here. One dollar per song. Jesus, you're ready to go to court just so you don't have to spend pocket change on artists you like? Could this bitter line of thought possibly be nothing but simple working class jealousy towards the beautiful men and women who are getting laid (ontop of a pile of money on E!) alot more than you?

Am I crazy? Did I confuse the entire issue? Or am I really right in saying that people who actually think they should be allowed to take whatever they want for free are a bunch of penguin-stroking hypocrites?

Those are my thoughts. What are yours?

I steal a lot and it's clearly wrong, but after a brief risk/reward analysis I decided it was worth it.

It's mostly anime, which if I wanted to buy legitimately I'd have to wait a year or more and hope american dub isn't the only option. Then be disappointed at how most of the money isn't going to the people who made it in the first place.

I'd like to be able to pay artists/studios directly for their work, but that's not an attempt to justify my stealing, just how I hope the market evolves in the future.
No I'm never serious.

I checked piratebay right when I saw this, it's currently down...piratebay DID win right? That's probably what the main picture was, it was sort of a random picture of 2 people and the devil maybe? Or thats jsut something completely different,

Anyways, thepiratebay has done nothing wrong. People are just sharing their files. It's as simple as that, and if the files happen to be something they payed for, it doesn't matter because its still file sharing. It can't be file stealing because of the fact that some people bought it and shared a serial key OR they "cracked" it. Even if they didn't buy it, I think it's a difficult task to be able to crack programs like Adobe After Effects. Though they didn't pay for it, they deserve it from all the hard work they put in to crack it. THEN they basically share their results with the torrent community. Here at TL, we use torrents as a way of sharing files of starcraft. <3 piratebay and <3 torrenting.

Sharing sensitive personal information or child porn is just sharing files too~

When you buy something you don't actually buy the right to do whatever you want with it, there are legal limitations.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=stealing

To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=share

To allow someone to use or enjoy something that one possesses

stealing suggests that the original person no longer has the item in question, which in the case of filesharing, is not true. sharing is the proper term.

either way, i dont do it, id rather pay so that they can continue making music/movies/video games/etc but if other people do it, i dont really care.

EDIT: useful picture

The trial will go on for 12 days atleast if I recall right. Today was just the first day. Also your logic makes little sense. Doesen't matter if they put work behind it. The law is clear. Your not supposed to copy anything, except for personal use. (And not even for personal use in some countries and in some items.) And most definently not share the copied files.

Your right. 1$ isn't much, but 50$ for that new game that just came out, is much or a movie for example.

The thing is, you can't invent the wheel, and expect people to walk. If you catch what I mean. Filesharing will be almost impossible to stop, no matter what they do. They need to do something really drastic, and the effect this trial will have on filesharing in general, will be non-existant.

Downloading is stealing. But when it's so easy to do, and hard to get caught, and you can save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, depending how active you are. Sounds good... no? ^^

I lol'ed at the Beowulf line. God that movie was horrid. Book was better by far.

But yeah, most of my music is downloaded. I don't have a problem with it, and I don't intend to stop. This is because I can save money. Believe me, if I were rich I would go buy every album in the world to put in a giant room in my giant mansion. But that's not the case, so I can't help it. The fact is that $15 for a CD is a lot more than people can afford, especially in this time of recession. Luxury shouldn't be based on how much money you have, that's my opinion.

Hell, why do you think I do it? But the question asked in the OP wasn't about whether it was legal or not, but whether or not it was right or wrong. Filesharers seem to think they have some kind of perverted "right" to share software that is not their own.

Well then, how is downloading stealing? You can download demos of stuff for free. Downloading torrents and full versions of stuff is just a buffed up demo version. If you really like a game for instance that you downloaded, you can buy it to get a serial key to play online. If you don't like it, just leave it as it was and you don't have to go all the way back to Game Stop and return it.

i doubt anyone actually thinks that when they pirate software they're doing a "right" thing. they would have to be pretty retarded not to realize it's wrong. i try not to do it, but i have no qualms when it's much harder for me to obtain the product as opposed to a rapidshare link because they only have either one way of payment or (god forbid) i have to walk into a brick and mortar store miles away to get it. yeah it's wrong, but hell, you'd have my business if you had a good business model.
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

Yeah, the whole reason I wrote this blog was because the piratebay people actually seem to think they are doing nothing wrong by supporting filesharing. It seems so obvious to me, someone spends time, money and effort creating something trying to make a profit, and these overzealous filesharers think they are doing nothing wrong spreading it for free.

Though the question I have to ask you is what kind of business model would be necessary to stop filesharing. So far all the anti-crack attempts have done nothing but make life harder for the people who are actually paying for their software. Remember Half Life 2? Remember how easy it was to crack it and play it offline? Remember what a complete pain in the ass it was to install and play it as a paying customer?
Excuse me hun, but what is your name? Vivian? I woke up next to you naked and, uh, did we, um?
