My name is Jason Dishong, a 20 year old college student in New Jersey studying Music Technology. I have been a musician for most of my life and got into Music Tech after I realized that being a recording artist is the worst mistake you could ever make. So I will work in the studio.
But enough of that, how did I get into Starcraft? Well, it started January of 2008. My friends were involved in a program called When East Meets West where in the Winter students from JeonJu University in South Korea spent 3 weeks in America seeing the sights and working on an art project with the American students.
One night I called up my friend Steve to see what he was doing, him and the Koreans were playing Starcraft. I despised the game at the time, I had this idea in my mind that Starcraft was a third-rate game and it couldn't compare to such RTS's as Age of Empires and Total Annihilation (I was an ignorant mess back then). I figured I was bored in my room anyway so I went over there and watched them play for a bit. I think the funniest part of watching them play was the sheer hand speed difference between the Koreans and the Americans.
Then I decided to play a game, my first ever game of Starcraft, against a native Korean.
What have I gotten myself into?
So the first game was a 2v1 my friend Phil and myself against Jin. I was Protoss, Phil was Terran, and Jin was Zerg. I remembered patrolling back and forth through my base with an Archon thinking that was enough to protect my base.
Keep in mind, all I had was an Archon. And possibly 10 probes.
After the beatdown that Jin gave us. We then did a 3v1 Steve, Phil, and me against Jin. I changed my race to Terran and the part of the game I remember was when my Command Center was destroyed by one Dark Templar. Let me give you the dialogue of that particular game.
Jason: Guys my Command Center is losing HP, what's going on?
Steve: You're being attacked by a Dark Templar!!!
Jason: Where is it?
Steve: It's cloaked you have to have a detector.
Jason: How do I get a detector?
Steve: Build a Missle Turret!!!
Jason: I can't I don't even have a Engineering Bay
Steve: THEN BUILD ONE!!!
Jason: i can't, i don't even have a barracks yet.....T_T
But for some reason I had never had that much fun losing in a video game before. So my friends and I started watching YouTube videos of Boxer and marveling at how good he was. That turned into watching old VODS of Boxer's Triple Bunker Rush against Yellow and other such videos. Eventually we began having Starcraft night where we would play Starcraft all night long. Being the competitive gamer I am, I began looking for strategy websites and watching progaming VODS. I was a Terran and really looked up to NaDa and I still cheer for him today. While looking through the web I came across teamliquid.net and have been using it for most of Starcraft addiction.
And now in 2009 I am a part of the When East Meets West program and I will be going to South Korea in July for three weeks. I will be practicing Starcraft as much as I can and my goal for July is to win ONE game against my friend Hyun Joon. I recently played four games with him over b.net and got my face smashed all four times. I will get revenge!!
But this blog will share my slight addiction with Koran culture. My sleepless nights watching Winner's League, or trying to learn the "Rainism" dance (I already know the Mirotic dance). And when the time comes in July, there will be pictures of Korea. So for now farewell.
