I remember when I first started hearing my idiot classmates in grade 12 using the word baller it drove me nuts. Every time someone did something it was "BAAAALLIN'!" And I was just thinking... No... no that wasn't (but that was mostly because... It was just embarrassing to hear them say the word).
I was under the impression the word came from poker, and came with the visual of a snowball rolling down a hill and picking up mass, like a poker player in a tournament stacking people and getting bigger and bigger and more unstoppable. I didn't know that it originally came from basketball players... And I kind of don't even believe that.
If someone is doing a series of skillful things in a row, I still tend to say they're balling out of control

Sometimes when I talk to people, I'll use the actual definitions of words, and then they'll misunderstand me and get completely retarded because they wanted to use their own personal definition of the word. The English language is evolving, but it isn't evolving randomly. It has structure, and everyone you intend to understand you should know what you mean by the word when you use it.
