I guess if you're going into medicine or computers, the prereq majors are necessary... but for everyone else... =/ I was English and Psych double major. And what do I do now? Overseas education consultant and part time Starcraft caster.  | ||

Eventually graduated with 2 majors that I'm somewhat interested in. With English I figured I could do something in advertising or editing, perhaps go to grad school for creative writing or something. To be honest, by the time I chose my majors I just wanted to get the hell outta school. ^^ | ||

Like other naive people, I figured it was a merge of high school biology and chemistry and, hey, I liked those courses in high school! Actually, biochem is just looking at life on a molecular level eg. protein interactions and structures, signalling pathways, DNA expression. It's actually pretty interesting stuff, you just can't exactly see your experiments except through ... secondary experiments lol The problem for me was that I didn't have a biochem course till 2nd year. First year was just general sciences and I had a single biochem course in the winter semester of 2nd year. So basically, we were in the dark for a while and by then, as kids are, we're too lazy/scared to switch programs. Even though we're young, we think "meh, I'm half done, I might as well finish". This is how a ton of people in my program in 4th year have no intentions of going into biochemistry research. Most people wants to go to med school, pharm school, law school, dentist school, uhhh mba? ... Yea, sry, just ranting about university. So the lesson is: research your degree and find out if you'll actually like it EDIT: Wow, a lot of people in the life sciences. Actually, it's not too late to switch to chemistry if you're in 2nd year. I knew a friend who did that and by that time he had all the prereqs for med school. Don't be afraid to change if you really hate your program or happen to find your calling in life. You're young, a few extra years in school isn't gonna ruin you! | ||

After highschool I wasn't really sure what I wanted to study -- something in science though. Math or physics were my main interests. But then physics got more boring and math got more awesome throughout my first year at university so I went into math. Also, my dad is a math prof at my school so I've grown up with it, which no doubt influenced me in some way. Anyone else write the Putnam last Saturday? Job prospects: None! Yay pure math... | ||

I think I'd go crazy teaching highschool or elementary school. That is a job I do not have the skills to do. I'll probably just end up in grad school for 5 years after my undergrad and then have no job, unless I get lucky. | ||
