Then again I wasn't looking to be more outgoing at the time. It just kind of happened on it's own.

I agree with the rest, college, work, alcohol helps with this.

If you genuinely want to be more out going, rather than thinking that you being shy is just a 'bad' trait, then just work at talking to other people. Simply that. Nothing else to it, just force yourself to go out in the open and communicate. You may never become completely open to large social situations, but you will be better at it.I'm a really introverted, shy, quiet, unsocial kid. Its just I'm nervous around being people and bad at talking with people. I'm not nervous around people I know closely, but I'm really not a person that would get a lot of friends easily. I'm a bad public speaker for the related reason as well, and I'm just not a social person at all and I'm really bad at understanding people and body language as well. Any advice or suggestions for improving this?

I was very shy for ages, and now I am the one who is always doing presentations and questioning the lecturer's assertions during busy lectures.
