I'm not saying that this girl is a bad person, but you've got to keep people like her away from you with a ten-foot pole because they might value their own achievements over their health, their relationships, their friendships, etc. And that's when it gets fucked up.

I had a friend who had pretty good grades and classes, but he worried about them all the time.
Over the summer of senior year, he was essentially forced to study at home five hours a day every day in the summer after eight hours interning as a programmer, because he didn't get into the private schools he and his parents wanted him to get into, who also made him turn down basically every invitation he ever got from friends to hang out, visit friend's houses, video games, movies, etc and this state of affairs had been going on essentially since sophomore year.

well ok i dont know what UCI is like, but i know people who've gone to bad local schools instead of better ones bcuz of other circumstances. good students exist at bad schools too??????

There are people who respond to getting into substandard schools by getting incredibly stressed out, especially if they've failed to live up to their standards. I think the mindset runs, "fuck i didn't do well in hs and now I'm here, shit, if i don't get straight As here i really do have to kill myself now." If it's not for that reason, if she got offered money by Irvine than elsewhere, that could be it, I have a friend who went to SD over Cal (partially) because she got a full ride there and little-none at Berkeley.

for in-staters, either school still costs sub 15k/year, i think if she really cared about the value of education, she would've bit the bullet and taken the loans instead of a full ride at UCI, especially if she had high expectations for herself. if you are an out-of-stater, going to UCI is stupid. also, the girl said in the thread she's had straight As since elementary school, so its not this bounceback "make up for my failures thing"
actually i looked it up the cost is around 25k. whoops, i dont know shit about berkley. whatever, 100k should be nothing for a girl with as high expectations as her

Well, she's at Irvine, so either she didn't get in elsewhere or she picked it over another UC for some reason or another. If it's the second, for whatever, maybe she's just a crazy worried perfectionist that unhealthily obsesses over grades; if she's gotten straight As all her life and she doesn't think she'll be able to keep it up in college; her courseload will only get harder than it is now and she might be really worried about that. I would agree that she is putting too much emphasis on grades and less on others, etc. But if it's the first (maybe it's rather unlikely, I don't know the stats too well), maybe her courseload was relatively easy or she had no extracurriculars to speak of and straight As through high school weren't enough to get her in, I would hesitantly guess at my theory, although of course it could just as easily not be that.
Either way I don't think the OP is called for.
