doing favors for people sucks, and i am never doing it, ever ever again. helping people is stupid and shitty and a horrible idea if you have any self-respect at all.
here's what happens when someone asks you a favor, there's three outcomes. you either a) say yes and do the favor, b) say yes but don't do the favor, c) say no.
if you end up doing someone a favor, you put in however much time or money, usually a lot more time or money than the person asking you the favor realizes or cares, like if you spend 5 fucking hours on some video or some song but they don't know shit about anything, and that's why they asked you, so they don't have any fucking clue how hard or how long you worked on it, and then you end up finishing it and half the time you don't even get credit, and even if you do, most of the time ur just a footnote on somebody else's pride and joy
if you end up not following through on it because you realize how much work is required and how little it's going to pay off for you, and you just put it way down the list of priorities or don't have time for it at all, which is totally reasonable, then the person you initially agreed to thinks u "let them down", like you owe anything to them even though they had the audacity to come and ask you for some huge favor and you were just trying to be nice and say yes and make everybody happy. instead they just think of you as a flake and that follows you forever pretty much
then there's c, which i'm going to start doing to every single person who ever asks me a favor, but i'm going to change it from say "no" to "no idiot i don't have time for ur bullshit"
note that nothing on TL brought this up, although i do get asked to do tons of "projects" from TL people and no i don't have any time for that so don't ever ask me motherfucker, and props to the rest of the graphics team u guys are unsung heroes
i'm actually mad because:
my sister is all pissed at me because i didn't play a fuckin raffi cover set with her at some gay faggy cover concert with like 100 people there. raffi is fucking shitty and for kids and yes i guess it might be a funny concept but no i would never spend 4 hours practicing BANANA PHONE like i had to on wednesday, playing the same shitty children's songs over and fucking over because my sister is a horrible musician and mentally retarded. then when i said "there's no way we can play this tonight, it's not ready and ur too drunk" she's like U LET ME DOWN WE'RE NOT FRIENDS ANYMORE I CAN'T BELIEVE U DID THIS
i didn't even fucking want to play that shitty set i only said yes because you were hammered and i thought it was a pipe dream like all your other fucking horrible half-baked ideas STFU why can't some people just realize that their ideas suck and they will never come to fruition, and they should stop asking other people to help them become reality when it's a total utter waste of fucking time

I'm the oldest out of my siblings and we're a chinese family so when I ask for a (reasonable) favour, they pretty much have to do it. Also they have to call my in a respectable way: "older brother" instead of my first name.
In the olden days I might have to return the favour by protecting them if they got in a fight or something, but the way society works nowadays I not really obliged to do them any favours at all. I still have to "look after them", although that usually means making sure they're doing my chores properly.

doing favors when you're not asked to do them gives everyone warm fuzzy feelings inside. but i agree that asking for favors is a bad system most of the time. you have to judge the person really strictly to see if they appreciate and know exactly what they're asking of you. or just immediately think of something they can do for you in return, so that it's more of an exchange of services than an exchange of favors

One possible solution is to attempt to explain to the person that the favor they want is actually a really big deal. It won't always work, but perhaps sometimes.
Person 1: Hey yubee. I was hoping you could do me a favor... I need an intro video sorta like the TSL one except about three times as long. That isn't too hard for you right? ^_^
Yubee: Do you have any idea how long that will take me? (Feel free to exaggerate). I can't afford to spend an entire day on a new video.

I see your point about doing favours, but at the same time, I think you should realize that if you agree to do something for someone and they make it clear to you that's it's important, you better follow through.
If I ask something of someone and I explain that I really need this or it will fuck over something else, I think I have the right to be mad if they agree and then just bump it down on their priority list because they don't think they owe me anything. If you weren't 100% sure you could do it, then just say so, don't say yes and then jerk me around later when you decided not to do it.
So, I see your point, but I think your argument is flawed.

Say no to the rest. I can't see how there's any discussion about you being a pussy or not having self-respect. Only favors I ever act upon are people that I deem worth it [ close friends ] which means even if they never pay me back its enough to know that I did something that benefited them. Also close friends usually don't ask unreasonable or ridiculous favors. Even if they do, its easier to explain to them why its stupid or why I'm not doing it.
Everyone else say no in one way or another. A favor cannot be completed without the person asking and you participating. Its kinda like going to see a movie you know is gonna be bad, and then complaining it sucks while watching it<---dumb, unless you go to see it with good friends, you're bound to have a good time anyway. So yeah I guess that's my analogy.

I can 100% relate. I get asked for favors a lot, I simply ask people to pay me for my time now (been taken advantage of plenty, so I completely understand your feelings there). I just say something like, "This is going to take me 5 hours to fix your (whatever) or make you this (thing), so pay me whatever you think 5 hours of my time is worth. I usually make $(amount)/(time) when I do this professionally." Totally reasonable. Then the burden's on them to not insult you. And if they do, write them off. Nothing is more productive than writing off bad friends.
LOL i just remember, my roommate asked me to drop off his rent check our first month, I'm like, "No." "Why not?" "Don't want to." We were all smoking bud and everyone in the circle started laughing nervously because I was so direct.

This is what I was talking about in my last post. I'm actually someone who WANTS to do stuff for people who are my friends [ the only people who I accept to do favors ]. If they are generally close friends I don't mind.

It doesn't matter where you go either. Any place where you have to interact with people they will show you just how moronic they are.
Example: I work in a DIY store, and part of my duties is to move freight on the forklift trucks. There is a specific, out of the way aisle in the back for bulk freight that the lifts are allowed to drive on inside the store. Now, it doesn't matter WHAT the motherfuckers are looking for in the entire store (4 or 5 foot ball fields long and maybe 3 wide) but they always find their way into that back aisle and will stand around at blind corners or just walk directly down the fucking middle of that aisle so you can't get around them, and of course they walk as slowly and methodically as possible. Either way they don't move when a 6500 lb piece of equipment + load WITH A LOUD FUCKING HORN is coming right at them. I've had countless dumbasses pop right out in front of me from one of the side aisles and freak out like a deer in the headlights when they see me stop 10 feet in front of them, even though I've been laying on the horn the entire time while I've been moving. They just act so surprised "OMG BIG LIFT COMING AT ME". Well yeah, but you heard me coming for damn near a minute beforehand. FUCKING PAY ATTENTION. They just don't care. And that's not preoccupation. That's stupidity. Intelligence is a hereditary trait, and it's purpose is to help ensure survival. They obviously don't show it.
On the actual point of walking behind people....yeah they actually know you are there, they just don't give a shit about you, and won't move because you're not more important than them avoiding the effort to take two steps to the side. Such is the mentality of a person that only thinks of themself (AKA a fucktard). Little old ladies are the worst. They shoot looks at you like you're stalking them or something but continue to just plod around directly in fornt of you. Two stepsto the side, ma'am, and I'll be fucking gone.

I love doing favours for people i love doing favours for. I do it because it helps them, because they appreciate it, because i know that me spending my time on their cause has caused a chain reaction of events where they will be inclined to spread that feeling with others they like doing that for.
If those things don't happen when i do a favour for someone, i won't do them a favour. That doesn't make me an asshole, that makes them the asshole.
Makes it pretty simple.
Then again, when i ask someone to do a favour for me, i go out of my way to make sure that they know i appreciate it. I usually offer to pay them - usually better than if they had done it for a stranger - or take them out for a night of drinking/drugs/fun, or make them dinner, etc.
I hate asking people for favours. If i do, 1) realize i appreciate it. 2) if you don't want to do it, either don't do it, or pretend that it's not such an inconvenience that you're going to ruin my day for having asked you.
what i hate more than any of the above though, are people who do me favours - without having asked them to! - and then expect something in return. those people really piss me the fuck off.

No. The difference is that you know exactly what to expect when you volunteer. You voluntarily choose to spend your time doing a certain thing. If you are asked to do a favour by someone you expect to be able to ask them for a favour when you need one. I volunteer because I know the people need my help, appreciate it, and I know what I'm in for before I'm commited.
The trick is to get better friends or be a better person yourself. Maybe your friends are asking you these favours because you've actually asked them for some things without realizing it.
My friend held onto a cellphone for me instead of giving it to someone else and I helped him cram for an exam and paid for his dinner. Altruism doesn't exist but friendship is awesome.

Here's a story. Our family owns a vacation condo, with a setup where a "house" is split into 6 units. Gated community type, yada yada. The couple that lives below our unit invited their kids' families, not having known that the place has a max 6 person/unit rule for how many pple can stay at one time. So what do they do??
They ask us (who werent planning on using our unit then) for a favor, to let some of their family stay in our unit for like 2 weeks. What the fuck? Who the hell asks whether they can basically "borrow their house". That's an incredible security risk and who knows what the fuck they're going to be doing inside while they're there. Get a hotel for crying out loud.
And what did they do when we said "no, we cant do that sorry."? They were INCREDIBLY OFFENDED that we wouldnt do them a simple favor after they were such good neighbors for so many years or whatever (we hardly know you what the fuck!!) and actually proceeded to spread rumors about us how we're terrible neighbors bla bla bla to the committee that runs the place, the manager, etcetc.

oh, AND they wanted the right of first refusal in the event that we sell the unit. WHAT THE FUCK WHY WOULD WE EVER WANT TO DO THAT. How does it make ANY sense to basically give shit for free and would potentially block hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales etc. Apparently they desperately want to buy our unit when it goes on sale, b/c it's on the 2nd floor and has great views of the ocean and shit like that. And they think it's their RIGHT or something to ask for this. FUCK OFF.

I'm pretty sure I do more favors than that which are asked for by me. I know how it feels to get a crappy favor asked of you and I usually oblige it but let the person know how much of a hassle it is to do shit for them.
People are always asking me for favors in computer help and cell phone shit. I guess I usually take something out of the (learning experience) as well so that probably helps.

Peer pressure, a buddy of mine and I can get almost anyone at my school to do anything. I personally have no problem not returning favors to people if I don't think I have any more use for them or the favor is ridiculous. It starts sucking really bad though when it's close friends and family...especially family.

Fuck yesterday (which was thanksgiving) I had to do the shittiest favor.
So I went to my Gf's uncles house where they were practically done with dinner already (at like 2pm, and thats another thing why the fuck do people eat dinner so early on Tday?) and were getting wasted. I hadn't eaten a thing all day (since I woke up at like 12:30) so I wasn't even thinking about drinking. A few hours later my gf's mom leaves and then since i'm sober my gf asks me if she can give her and her friend a ride to some party later, I say ok.
Her friends call back and say they are coming over instead and then my gf's uncle's gf is asking them to bring a pack of cloves for her.
A little while later they are too drunk and can't come so the lady asks me to take her to get a pack in her car. I was right in the middle of a hand/game (we were playing poker), and she was like nagging me. Since it is Thanksgiving and they made all this food and let me eat I obliged her.
So when we get back her drunk ass lost her change (like ten bucks) and the cigs she bought, either at the store or getting into the car. So she is now nagging me again to go back and get them or buy her a new pack and hands me not enough money to buy a new pack and saying "im short a dollar is that ok?". My gf covers the money and I tell her I'll go but I'm leaving also so I'll just dip her in and out.
Turns out that my phone slipped out of my pocket in the lady's car before and I have to go back and get her keys and blah blah.
Moral of the Story, Being drunk is an excuse to get out of most favors.
I really hate these people. Really fucking loud and annoying, especially frustrating when we are trying to play poker and it takes 3 minutes for her uncle to act EVERY FUCKING TIME because they are chit chatting about bullshit. And they have these pet rats that they kept letting loose on the table and taking pictures with and shit, WOW some rats, AMAZING, get over it. And he is bringing other players into the conversation and making it take even longer. And his excuse is that this is how he reads people or some idiotic thing. So each hand takes like 15 minutes at least. And he has the to say shit like I would never stand a chance in a casino because I don't talk or something (which doesn't make sense because I've won every time I've gone). He was telling this story about how he was at an indian casino and some pit boss/waitress were asians and being shitty and not giving him drinks or whatever and trying to make them sound bad. But after this night I can totally side with them, without even knowing their side of the story. No wonder he gets kicked out of them all the time.
I'm never going over there again.
