I have the biggest problem of this, every time in school we have to go up to present some project, I get super nervous and I seem like I'm the only one in my class. This is what happens to me
1. My voice gets dry and low
2. I can't breathe right, like I choke on my words

Do any of you all know how to get rid of this? I've had this problem forever now. I wanna be more confident and just talk to an audience.

This is very common. It's the most common fear in humans, rated ABOVE 'death', I believe. I generally just approach those types of things with an "I'll live" slash "fuck it" attitude, and it all works out. It's not nearly as bad as it is when you run it through in your mind 500x.

edit: Also, just know your shit when you go up to do whatever you're doing, it makes it a lot easier. Just think of how awesome you'll feel when you're done.

I wish back when I was in school I would have been made to do such things on a weekly basis or something... It took me some time out of high school to get to the point where such things didn't freak me out anymore. It doesn't really affect me anymore now that I've done it a million times.

That it is true, many people fear public speaking more than death... Try to speak naturally, instead of having to remember all that dialogue you made up while waiting.

I have the same problem. I believe one of the best solution to finding confidence and improving yourself is by speaking socially/publicly with people. Speak to your girlfriend a lot, speak to your friends a lot, find a job that requires a lot of social interaction where you'd have to articulate a lot, etc. I find myself lacking in this area for a very long time, but ever since I've been working at a dental office (I'm 24 years old now) and speaking to patients & insurance representative over the phone a lot, I find speaking very easy. The one thing about speaking to an audience or to a single person is that you have to have an explosive mentality, be able to articulate and be real. Don't have the mindset of hiding under a shell, but a mindset of someone ready to jump into the fire (but be real and funny).

yeah i do this, i treat it as if i'm bullshiting about something i know nothing about.

of course i KNOW all the stuff im going to present so its really about letting yourself just talk to relay information.

it's all a mindset thing

if you go into it dreading it of course it isn't going to go well

instead, embrace it and look at it as a free 50 points or however much an oral presentation is worth.

just be adequately prepared for your presentation. sometimes it might even help doing the presentation in front of a sibling. during this practice run, don't have them measure you on content, have them tally how many "um" and "like" etc you say. my 9th grade english teacher had a snapple bottle cap with that freshness seal thing and would "pop" it everytime she heard one of those things. my first presentation i had around 30 or 40 "um/like/etc" in a 7 minute oral presentation lol. eliminating those already makes your presentation sound much more professional and prepared.

also on that note, remember that its better to have a second filled with silence than a second filled with "umm". while the silence might feel like an eternity for you, it really isn't that long. and actually you sound more confidence compared to the obvious "don't-know-what-to-say ummm".

I used to get nervous all the time with public speaking. Over time as I did more and more of it for various reasons, it became much more natural and I just got used to it. It no longer pulls me out of my comfort zone anymore so I don't get nervous.

Since I knew I would be the nervous type, the first time I did a speech I was literally reading out a script word for word. As I did more speeches I did less preparation. Eventually it got to the stage where I would just put up pictures I googled that morning and talk about them (of course this relies on you understanding and being confident in what you're talking about).

So I went from dreading the thought of speaking to an audience to really enjoying it and wishing I could do it more. For now, you should probably practice giving the presentation at home before doing it in class.
No I'm never serious.

practice practice practice. take a speech class if you are that interested. you just need to find the confidence, but it's hard to find if you don't already have it

Confidence, as can be attained by knowing what you're talking about, and knowing what you're going to say before you stand up (not necessarily every word, but a pretty good idea of how you're going to say everything you want to say). WORKED FOR ME! (TM) (problem is, you'll need to take the time to learn the shit you're talking about, which could be hours)

Also, in classes, your audience is usually quite sympathetic, and aren't looking for your faults. At worst, they'll just wait until you sit down. The worst presentations I've sat through in classes, I was thinking "oh man, this guy's gonna get a bad grade" not "nice try, asshole, I'm gonna find your house and burn it down!"

You don't have to give a perfect presentation; the purpose is to say your shit and sit down.

Like everyone else said, this is very common and there is no easy way out of it. Changing mindset and such can help a bit but in the end there is no substitution for practice, practice and more practice. (See it as reading strat forum vs playing iccup )
Join speaking classes/debate clubs/what have you and also practice on your family and such (if it's an option.)
I also agree very much with that knowing your subject very well helps.

Normally I can get myself together when I have to present something/talk freely but recently I had to read out a protocol and choked on my words like 2 times.. Was really embarassing.. Reading something out seems to be much harder for me than just doing a presentation where you can talk freely. At least you can talk somewhat normal there, whereas I always feel the need to control my volume and speed when reading something out..

The best way is to prove for yourself that you are superior over all of those petty listeners and then you will be able to talk with a burning belief like no other, after all everything you say can only have positive effects on them.

The hard part is to become so ignorant that you actually believe in the above.

- ur enemy is adrenaline i.e. "stage fright" as u get nervous anticipating the momment and then during the moment, feeling the symptons and having to deal with them only makes you more nervous and self conscious and adrenaline keeps peaking..
- join a debate or theater class/group or even better sign up for improv; do improv for a few months and u will eventually learn to handle it; works like a charm - basically u have to expose urself to public speaking over and over
- alternatively, get ur doctor to prescribe u propranolol 20 mg (a beta blocker - it blocks part of the effect of adrenaline) and take it 1.5 hours prior to public speaking to prevent most of the symptoms of stage fright - it usually helps reduce the time it will take u to get over the problem too; don't use propranolol unless you doc approves it and he has checked u out, its a pretty safe med at that dose if nothing else is going on with u but it in some conditions it may not be (asthma, diabetes, some heart arrhythmias, list is longer)
- don't use alcohol or anxiolytics because though u migh obtain temporary relief they will never help u overcome this problem and sometimes actually make it wose over time; it is something u have to face over and over until u lose the fear associated with it..
- google "stage fright techniques" and "stage fright" and you will find some useless advice and some very good advice in some of the links..
