So at work part of my job is to randomly generate passwords for people who forget their login password or unable to log in.

Every time (literally 100% of the time) I get an password with a ! in it I tell the person on the phone "exclamation mark" and they read it back to me "exclamation point" -_- Not following my leadership at all.

Being a semi-grammar nazi, I need to know which one it is.

I specifically remember learning this in like kindergarten. They taught us both.

I think I say point more often, but I have no way of telling except now I'll make note of which one I use. hah.

That's the exact same logic I had. It's all about consistency. Question mark, exclamation mark, dark mark, etc.

That comparison could easily point the other way: i.e. that exclamation point was the original, and people like you began using exclamation mark by analogy with question mark. But why speculate: let's check the sources:

OEDILF lists both "exclamation mark" and "exclamation point", as well as "bang".

The original OED indicates that the original word for ! was "point of exclamation", "note of exclamation", or simply "exclamation". Both "exclamation mark" and "exclamation point" were originally U.S. usages, although now they have spread.

OED cites 1864 Webster's Dictionary with "exclamation point". It has an 1896 citation for "mark of exclamation". Its first citation for "exclamation mark" is from 1926, from Fowler's Modern English Usage, no less.
'As per the American Heart Association, the beat of the Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" provides an ideal rhythm in terms of beats per minute to use for hands-only CPR. One can also hum Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust".' —Wikipedia

According to the renowned scholar Google, "exclamation mark" has 826,000 hits and "exclamation point" has 2,090,000 hits.

However, in a stunning turn of events, the wikipedia talk page offers "dog's cock", which I think should take precedence over both of the above terms.

How can it be a point? There is a point in it yes, but the object as a whole is not just a point, it's a mark.

If your thoughts were somewhat coherent, you would realize I was talking about how it doesn't matter because the difference is only what people think it is.

I don't particularly fucking cared if some girl at my school just raped your heart. It doesn't mean you have to go on bitching about it. We care so much. It was last august for god sakes. Grow up.

It seems like both are fine, but that Americans (as in US, not Canada) tend to say Exclamation point (thus explaining the google search), while the rest of the world primarily uses exclamation mark. I have never in my life heard anyone call it an exclamation point
