Edit: Below is OP from way back, I'm just bumping/editing to gauge interest in book club #3. First post on possibility of new book is here.
There have been a lot of threads on TL lately about books/writing/reading. This got me thinking, TL is a community, and a lot of us are into reading...Book Club?
So I am guessing we pick a book, and then 2 weeks (just example, can be less/more) for reading, and then discuss said book. This thread is where we should see if anybody is in, and decide our first book.
Here are my ideas, feel free to agree/disagree.
1. A lot of people in various book threads have said they were really into Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, so I thought we could use that as the first book, but as I said before the process should be democratic, so suggest others if you wish.
2. Since TL is an international community, we should pick books that are relatively widely available. Idk, no obscure titles only available in certain countries.
So, yeah, discuss.
If you want to be in, but don't have anything to say in the thread, please just post saying "I would join" or something, so we can get a good idea of how many people are interested.
Alright, Fiction it is. (there used to be a poll here.)
New poll, I took the suggestions in the thread that weren't ender's game (for reasons mentioned in the thread) and weren't suggested by posters with <10 posts and very little time at TL.net. Posters like that disappear quite often, and, at least for this first book, I don't want to get saddled with the book choice of a guy than vanishes. Fair? Not really. Do I feel bad about it? Nope. Sorry, call me jaded if you must. Anyways, here are the 5 options for the first five books.
Poll closed, 1984 won.
Oh, and don't vote unless you are participating please.
Edit: New thread here:

As an english major i am so into this you have no idea.
Give me some citrussy blubber.
|
I'd definitely be in for this. I'm always looking for good books to read, but I hate browsing for them myself because I have a knack for always picking the lamest books on the shelf =/
|
Sounds good, but if a lot of people have read Ender's Game, I don't see the point to starting out with that book.
|
I'd be interested... always read anyway, sounds like fun.... I am actually one of the few that hasn't read Ender's Game though... We should pick a book that most haven't read however.
|
i'm in! i've read ender's game and love it, but i need new books to read as well ;O!
|
Jack Campbell for the win!
|
This is ridicilous, the only thing i'd read is the teamliquid magazine.
|
Alright, so it sounds like my enders game idea fails, so start suggesting books.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOO in ! You could just make polls about book choices, but we need at least a week after the poll so that people can get/read the book if they don't know it ^^
|
This would Rock so hard. Dostoyevskij plz!
|
yes! but rather than having a sort of tedious voting system or whatever for what books we read, maybe just 2-3 "leaders" choose the book each week and lead the discussion?
|
Alright, I added a poll to decide if this should be fiction or non or both in the op.
Also, START SUGGESTING BOOKS!!
Here are a few suggestions from me:
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Yeah, make some suggestions so we can get this show on the road.
|
I second Catch-22 I havent read it but everyone tells me it's amazing
|
i LOOOOVE reading so im down, mix of fiction and non fiction would be nice, although i prefer fiction.
as for books Have a few people suggest a few ideas, we vote on them and that is the one we read.
|
i've actually had this same idea, but to lazy to put it into action lol.
so i'd be down.
|
i'm totally in favor- i suggest Neuromancer and Clockwork Orange!
|
Tomorrow I will have a poll with all of the books mentioned in the thread, so if you have a book in mind, (preferably one that you haven't read) suggest away.
|
Microserfs by douglas coupland? I have it on my toread list and heard its amazing/hilarious. So ill toss it out there

hmm 3 english majors, i think we are about to be destroyed
|
I would be interested about this
|
i think you should choose new books so that less people will have read them. a lot of people have read the ender's game series and catch-22 already.

American Psycho - Brett Easton Ellis The Confidence-Man - Herman Melville Moby Dick - Herman Melville Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
However, personally I prefer non-fiction

Brave New World - 5th business 1984

The only way this will ever work is if 1-2 people take charge and pick the book. Don't do polls.

Polls could help in the beginning just to find out the general interest of the group that is going to participating... Say we decide to read fiction... then perhaps follow that up with a poll on the genres of choice... and then we rotate through a few genres or something with 1-2 people picking books that way...
Theres plenty of ways for this to work, just need to be organized.
I'll read anything that sounds interesting... I'm down with just about anything but a romance novel.
edit: How does a book club normally work? lol.

I would like to sign up. Starting up with Ultimate hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy or Foundation series would be good.

Alright, poll for the first book in the OP.
After this we will have until DECEMBER FIRST to get and read the book. I will make a new thread once the book is decided, lets say 24 hours from right now.
Next books will be decided by a group of 'leaders' I think, but we have time to figure that out.
|
I am no english major but I love english literature so this should be fun.

Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is my pick
|
5th business is the only one I haven't read from this poll, but Catch-22 is probably my favorite.
|
I've already read 1984, Brave New World and Slaughterhouse Five. So I think I'll go with Catch-22 since I've never heard of Fifth Business before.
And props for taking the time and getting this thing on the way Lemonwalrus :D

About half an hour left with the poll tied!
Oh noes!

oooooh I want to do this!

Gauging interest in a possible third book. Haven't put too much thought into it yet, just want to see if anyone is interested. Would like to have book chosen within a week or so and have book read entirely and discussion and whatnot pretty much finished by the second week in august.
So feel free to say if you are interested or not, what time frame is good for you and the like in this thread.
Also, how do you think book should be chosen?
I was thinking pm votes where you get +1 vote for each past book club you participated in. So like if you read world war z but not 1984 or vice verse, you get 2 votes, if you read both you get 3, and if you didn't read either you get 1 vote. This way we avoid people who are unlikely to actually stick it out and participate getting a large portion of the vote and simultaneously reward loyal book clubbers. Good idea?
DO NOT SUGGEST BOOKS IN THIS THREAD, AT LEAST FOR RIGHT NOW, I WILL MAKE A NEW THREAD FOR THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES. (I don't want the discussion to be derailed into 'list your favorite book and then never come back and read the thread' yet)
|
I would definitely be interested in another one. I really enjoyed world war z. For time frame might not have access to internet for the first week of august which shouldn't that bad because if you plan on having discussions on the second week i'll probably have finished the book and have access by then. The only thing i would like is having the book picked before July 31st. Having no access to internet, with nothing to do but read.
I like your idea for chosing the book. I'll probably get +1 point because even though i read wwz i barely participated in discussions.
|
This sounds like a nice idea. As much as I hated having to write papers on literary elements and stuff in high school I did enjoy the class discussions since there is so much stuff you miss on your own. I'd be interesting in participating.
