i use my pc for multiple burning purposes from music, data, movies and such as you all and i have two sets of dvd-r disks. one works absolutely fine, there are no problems with it, etc. another i have is a sony dvd-r(120min 4.7gb) and i mean ive been trying to write shit on it but my burner doesnt detect this kind of dvd(sony), is it the dvd or my burner? im just son confused. is it a good idea to try to the dvd on another computer?

thanks.

:O I've got the same problems I recently got some blank DVDs (but their DVD-RW) none of them are detected by my burners, except for one which already had stuff written on it. I was really hoping to burn some films as well.

Hopefully someone else can help us both.

I dont suppose its a difference between DVD+R and DVD-R right?

both DVDs are the same type or your burner supports both?

Otherwise I have no idea why it wouldnt work

My guess is that's definitely the problem now that you noticed the other discs are +R. In my experience, burners have supported one or the other.

Competing Formats

A previous DVD recordable format called DVD-RAM (DVD random access memory) predates DVD-R. Developed in 1996, DVD-RAM is a rewritable optical disc usually encased in a cartridge. Currently available in standard 4.7 GB (4.377 GiB), it is ideal for use that requires quick revisions and rewriting. In 2002 a new format was developed called DVD+R (or "plus" R). Created by a coalition called the DVD+RW Alliance, this format uses a number of improved technologies that, while generally unnoticeable to the end user, make a more reliable technology. One example is the ADIP (ADdress In Pregroove) system of tracking and speed control used by DVD+R being less susceptible to interference and error than the LPP (Land Pre Pit) system used by DVD-R, which makes the ADIP system more accurate at higher speeds. In addition, DVD+R(W) has a more robust error management system than DVD-R(W), allowing for more accurate burning to media independent of the quality of the media. Additional session linking methods are more accurate with DVD+R(W) versus DVD-R(W), resulting in fewer damaged or unusable discs due to buffer under-run and multi-session disks with fewer PI/PO errors.[1]

This new format, among other things, resulted in DVD-R being unofficially referred to as DVD "minus" R (though in countries where British English is dominant, the term "minus R" was already common; not just in contrast to "plus R")[2][3]. DVD-R and DVD+R technologies are not directly compatible, which created a format war in the DVD technology industry. To reconcile the two competing formats, manufacturers created hybrid drives that could read both – most hybrid drives that handle both formats are labeled DVD±R and Super Multi (which includes DVD-RAM support) and are very popular.

As of 2006, the market for recordable DVD technology shows little sign of settling down in favour of either the plus or dash formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats. However, because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favour the DVD-R standard exclusively[4].

DVD-R is more compatible and most movies use this afaik, DVD+R is better for data storage and stuff. But its pretty much the same shit.

I've always used these HP DVD-R
[image loading]
which are fine for the most part (few coasters here and there, but thats a given with any brand).
I've also used the Orange HP discs which are +R and those are fine too.

Just because the discs say a name brand don't mean they are good, its possible you got a bad batch. Just return them for these HP discs. They're usually cheaper too 50 discs for 15$ is the most I've ever payed.

PS- you might try and find some software/firemware or driver updates for the burner. Might have to open up case and look at model number if it doesn't show up in windows though.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

If you care about everything burning accurately, and everything lasting, then club.cdfreaks.com has thousands of threads on the best burners and the best media (usually taiyo uden). Just because a dvd burns and is readable doesn't mean it doesn't contain thousands+ of errors. Cheaper media end up with more errors and will not last nearly as long.

Alternatively, you can check what media works best with your burner in their forums. Certain burners work better with certain brands of blank media, etc.

The laptop drive probably recognizes and burns both.

always burn -R if you have a choice, +R isn't always recognized by every dvd reader.

Quite off-topic but wtf are coasters for exactly? Just for when you have a drink that has condensation on the sides and it drips down the side of the cup or something?

As for OP, like Charlie said you could just have a bad batch. It happened to me the first time I bought discs to burn my music on and it took me forever to find out why I couldn't write anything on them. I took them back and got a new batch, this time only 1 of the discs in the new batch wasn't writable O_o (lucky me?).

Try using another comp to see if it is the disc maybe, or just try another disc on your computer to double check. If that is not the problem I'm not really sure what is.
EDIT: Ahh missed that one post, so apparently it works on your laptop? You could try putting the files on a jump drive and plug it into your laptop so you can transfer the files from the drive to your DVD right? Or do the files you are burning need to be actually downloaded on your computer?

If you dont have coasters, you can create rings from the condensation on the cup. It can damage wood :O

its advertising also :D
