I'm looking for non-gaming related general internet forums. Maybe some where they have intellectual debate boards or something interesting like that.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Once in a blue moon something interesting is debated on /b/.

Gamereplays.org has a somewhat active general section, and then clan forums with many different interests. It's not the highest level of community, though.

The Cybernations.net forums also have decent general forums, but a cybernations account is required (free, but it takes a bit of effort to maintain your nation. You might get the added benefit of enjoying the game, though)

Did somebody actually suggest /b/? 0_o

In general I've found that "general purpose" boards rarely have the cohesion to hold intellectual discussions, and so people feel more willing to flame etc. If a board is too big, it is really hard to have a lengthy debate without there being about a zillion participants.

I'd look at any site which frequently has discussions like that. I'd just avoid any ultra-massive forums.

/b/ does have something intelligent posted on it once in a while. When the world was shitting itself over whether the LHC would kill us all, /b/ was discussing it. I learned a fair bit from that thread. Also, there is debate that is on par with TL's about the presidential debate, just full with a fair bit of morons. If you check 4chanarchive.org, you can find a job bitch thread that did quite well.

There is a tonne of aborted thoughts and brain shit, though.

No thanks I'm trying to get away from gaming sites. And over time if you read stuff on the same website you keep seeing the same types of posts from the same people, thus generating less original thought imo.

The best site I've found so far for my purposes has actually been /r9k/, but as it's become more populated there's a lot more shit content (natural progression of a forum I guess).

seriously, i'm sick of trying to open discussion on topics and getting them banned by biased mods.
not for cussing, not because i'm flaming, but simply because of the topic itself, or the stance i take.

stick to gaming topics on gaming forums. cause the unseen forces of censorship is too strong in forums not dedicated to open discussion.

also, if you're willing to chip in $5, metafilter has probably the best quality "grown up" and "intelligent" posters on any internet community.

It's tough to keep forums moderated and keep them having good content.

Whatever you do, don't give in (to 4chan xD)

I've found that xkcd has a pretty good community. Most of them are smart, there's people that know a ton about a ton of different stuff, but it can get a bit elitist and there's a LOT of inside jokes and stuff that go around. Make sure you've read the comics to get some of them.

But for discussing news, random things/issues, and for some very interesting and wacky topics it's great.

politicalcrossfire.com

anontalk.com (sometimes good stuff, but mostly pedos)

4chan.org (ROBOT 9000 is the best general board. There are terrific discussions there ALL THE TIME. forget /b/. ROBOT 9000 is /b/ without middle schoolers)

somethingawful has terrific forums, but you have to pay for it.
