It's official. I'm going to be the chess club adviser for my Middle/High School. I don't know when I'm starting, but I accepted the position today.

I receive a small compensation for the year, but I'm doing this less for the compensation than for the chance to get involved in the school outside of the classroom. This is good for many reasons.

I spoke to the previous chess club adviser. He explained how he had run the club in the past. Basically, once a week for 45 minutes to an hour, students meet after school and play chess. He would do a short presentation on a projector using chess software, and commentary by a famous chess player (the one from the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)).

They said the adviser doesn't need to be a master of chess, but just needs to be able to play and have a familiarity, so I should meet the requirements, although I better brush up and improve a bit. I'm open to suggestions for ways to do this. If anyone who's good at chess wants to help me out a little bit, I'd be honored. Suggestions for cheap/free chess software that would be helpful are also welcome.

If things are going well, there can be chess tournaments at the end of the year :D

Sorry all you go players, but there's no go club.

Searching for Bobby Fischer = worst / best movie ever. It's like the only DVD I own because I couldn't find a torrent at the time.

I started getting really into Waitzkin at that time, reading everything I could about him, until I found out he gave up chess to become a Judo master or something, at which point I lost interest. I like hearing his commentary on Chessmaster; it was pretty interesting.

I joined the chess club in my city in January and played in some tournament. I went 1-5, with my only win being against some 13 year old girl, and only because I started as white. She was still rated like 1440 vs my ~1200 at the time -_-.

Oh look I found it hahah
http://www.chess.ca/memberinfo.asp?CFCN=147717

Anyways, chess is awesome. I loved it as a kid and used to play a lot despite never understanding the deeper tactics. Awhile ago I used to teach some kids how to play chess every Friday at a school near where I lived, and it was funny when the kids used to get used to it and excited to play again, despite not being able to stand 10 year old kids.

Anyways, are you going to teach them tactics or just let them have at it? Going to run a ladder? going to play other schools? Sorry I don't even know which grades you teach, it's high school right? So they're probably are some pretty good players already I'd imagine.

Anyways we should play sometime! I play REALLY slow since I don't have any lines memorized. One time I was playing 90/+30 in a tournament, and on move 55 when I resigned I had 17 minutes left and my opponent had 97 -_-

Cheep/free software? You could search for a torrent. I know that I downloaded Fritz 11 off a torrent, it's a pain finding a good torrent though, but that would be really good, I wouldn't know about the other chess software, and I might even be misinterpreting what you mean by cheep free software =p, but anyway gl hf :D

It's mostly just going to be kids in the school playing each other (7-12th grade). There are ~10-15 returning members supposedly. I don't know yet if I'm going to have a ladder/league running throughout the school year or if it will just be fun games, or what. I'll probably do whatever was done last year.

I'm glad to play when I have time. I'd play yubee except he'd use a chess ai to destroy me. Don't worry I'm also slow (not my prior blog about chess). I somehow convinced my sister to play me last night, and she kept getting annoyed at how slow I was playing.

I used to be pretty good at chess. Won almost every game I played. It might just be because I never played any REAL competition though; mostly family and friends. Might get totally worked in a tournament, I hear a lot of tourney players are pretty hardcore.

I use to use Chessmaster 7000, but it's probably a bit outdated by now. Like 8 years outdated.

But I'd be up for some games sometime I guess. Been a few years since I've played, but I use to play quite a bit online when I was younger.

I've always hated chess. Too many fucking moves and thinking ahead like 3-5 moves isn't really in my comfort zone. I used to play on my Chessmaster and I kept getting raped on noob levels, so I gave up. Anyways, you could try googling free chess software or some shit like that.

Best of luck to you!

Lol that's how I felt until I tried playing go. Then chess became so much more simple and linear.

I have a trial version of kchess (which is pretty easy to unlock tbh) and I'd be willing to spend a little bit of money (~25 dollars) but I just can't dump several hundreds if any good programs actually cost that much.

One way you can encourage continued participation is by running an ongoing tournament/ladder in the club. The way it would work is that you play only one round of the tourney each week, and simply have it be a month(s) long affair. time controls would almost have to be towards blitz though maybe 15 mins each with like 3 sec fisher time, Or just make it a blitz tourney one month and then a slower one next month etc etc. just leave enough time to go over a game or certain tactics, endgames, etc, so you can actually teach the kids something. DO NOT TEACH ROTE OPENINGS, they will want you too but this is just straight up a bad habbit of youth chess. Youth chess is not won or lost in the opening, in fact you could even say the endgame is not that important beacuse so few games will reach a viable one. tactics are pretty much king and they will get the most benifit from that area of study. maybe handing out homework puzzles would be something you could do as well. anyways, that's just my ideas off the top of my head.

anyways, i haven't practiced my chess in a long long time so i am likely horrible now but if you want a game hit me up. (also any go players out there, i am always up for some games)

man, I'm confused. and a little drunk, but hey, er. The original post is about a club you're doing for your school, and you want advice; you've then got a list of people that want to play. so.. well, I'd like to know more than I do about chess. If you're going to play I'd like to play; if you're going to teach, I'd like to learn; if you're going to have an advice group about your role as a chess group er.. leader? I'd like to know the advice.

I'll play also, yahoo is a good way to play

Just my opinion, I believe its a dumb idea to show people how the pros play because noobs trying to emulate pros usually do far worse then people who practice and figure out the best ways to win themselves. It develops their game sense, strategy, prediction, mindgames, and tactics, something you can't get from direct copying of professional chess players.

Also, I think it's better to get cheap chess sets over having the students play each other through computers because real chess then requires more attention and you can trick people by looking in a certain direction on the board before owning them.

Competition through ladders or monthly tournaments are also good since that will make some of the chess people want to get better instead of dicking around and making the same mistakes without a care but don't forget the people who simply play for fun either.
