So after hearing mostly good things about it, I finally watched Firefly (which aired 6 years ago). I'm no newb to the genre; I've seen a good amount of Andromeda, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Enterprise.
But Firefly is probably the best sci-fi TV show I've ever seen. First of all, there's a distinct lack of space battles (no space lasers and sound effects). Instead, there's a lot of character-driven stories, Westerns style gunfights, subtle and not-so-subtle humor. All 9 main characters get screen time, and all of them are interesting, likable, multi-dimensional characters.
Unfortunately, it aired on Fox, which meant they made stupid demands on the producer, aired the episodes out of order, and canceled the show after 14 episodes. It's really a shame how much potential was lost there.
edit: There's a movie sequel called Serenity. It develops a bit of plot and I know this is grammatically incorrect but Summer Glau is way awesome yes you should really watch the show and movie now.
Anyway, if you like sci-fi settings and fun storytelling, it's quite a treat. You can stream it for free at http://www.hulu.com/firefly
I've seen it like 3 times already, probably will again in the future... it's so good. We talked about it with my friends too, and we demanded a better universe with at least 3 seasons of this great sci-fi. My favorite episode was "Our Mrs. Reynolds".
I'd like to start the series too, but before I do, does the movie give it a solid conclusion? Because I'd hate to devote time into it only to have it end with a cliffhanger.
LinkinPork: The movie explained only a part of the happenings in the firefly universe. IIRC there were a lot of things left open because the creators designed it for 5 or more seasons. So let's hope that either there will be a second (better) Firefly movie or that Firefly the series will relaunch (which will never happen).
Imho Firefly is easily the best TV show ever. Literally for years now I have one of the DVDs in my laptop drive at any given moment so that I can dive into this beautiful universe every time RL becomes dull again.
"Our Mrs. Reynolds" is definitely the funniest episode, I almost died laughing when I watched this the first time. Still I like "Out Of Gas" best even though it's one of the darker ones.
I started a real Firefly craze around here a couple of years back when I gave the DVDs to everyone. A friend of mine watched the entire series back to back, haha

Thanks for explaining.
I guess I'll check it out since people here seem to love it.

Yeah. As light-hearted as most of the show was, some really bad shit happened in it and the characters developed so naturally and so well

I don't know why but i have noticed that a lot of people have started to watch the show this year (including me).
oh man; i hope i dont get warned for this but... i bought the dvd set months ago because someone recommended it to me.
i didnt really have interest in it at all and only briefly read the description on the back of the dvdset but i just watched the whole thing plus the movie last night.
i pretty much pulled an all nighter and loved everything about it. i understand that the movie wasnt super awesome even though it was good but i cant blame them because i mean like... there was just SOOOO much left unexplained and a 2 hour movie just couldnt reveal it all.
the sheperd died. i really wanted to know about his freakin history. like why the allience gave him such respect in the series when he was injured and they I.D him and they were like.. GET HIM HELP NOW! lol
i really hope another movie is made,, or SERIES!!! but fuckk
that wash didnt die.. he was one of my fav characters.. sigh,,
ohhh and the musicccccc. holy shit, was anyone else touched by the music during the sad parts or whatever? i wasnt really feeling the whole countryside music tracks but like.. the solemn moments were so... epic.
i recommend this tv series to anyone. even though its "sci-fi", i loved it and i have never liked any other sci fi show.. ever.
LOLLLLL, is that commercial real?? i totally forgot about that scene in the movie, hahaha..
which reminds me. i wish they had an asian actor somewhere in the series (seeing as how much chinese influence there was) but im not complaining. just wishing...... (since im an asian actor
I actually haven't thought about the lack of chinese people throughout the series until there was an xkcd comic that brought it up. I think some appear only in the pilot. I thought that was pretty funny.
Love Firefly. My second favorite TV show. Doesn't beat Terminator though =D
I like how the backstory is, half of humanity is China-dominated, yet NONE of the influential characters or any characters with any sort of power are Asian.

by killing off 2 characters in the movie, maybe it'll open up some spots for new characters (please 1 be asian) if they ever decide to revitalize the series,
They wont revitalise the series, its just too old and the actors have probs all split and gone their seperate directions (even though you recognise some of them every now and then)
They might do another movie, but I personally didn't think Serenity lived up to the firefly series. The movie just tried to wrap everything up, but in doing so cut off a whole heap of suspense about the storylines they had built up in the characters throughout the series.
For example, we never see River do anything like take on a bar full of people in the series. Shes generally just out of it. However there is definitely something going on inside her head, and when she takes out those guys in the gunfight that was a HUGE omg moment. Seeing her then suddenly reveal she is a weapon in Serenity destroyed her character
Then theres Shepard, who just dies with no explaination as to his storyline. And Anara, who is basically just a cameo in the movie.
Firefly is one of my favourite series ever, but I think its best to let it go, and rewatch the few episodes that we did get, remembering what a great series it was (and was going to be), rather than someone trying to revitalise it and possibly ruining it.

And yea, I've gotta go with Our Mrs. Reynolds as the best episode. That chick that played Saffron was fucking hot as hell too.
Another thing I noted, the setting and some of the storyline really reminded me of Mass Effect 2.
The same reason fox cancels all good tv shows. Not making enough money.

Bit of a shame, but also keep in mind that you didn't have many decent well-known asian actors that weren't typed as martial artists and/or exotified sex objects back then. Can you imagine Lucy Liu or Jet Li in the Firefly universe? Doesn't really fit. Now we've got John Cho and Masi Oka, both of whom would be somewhat better (in that they aren't bad kung-fu actors), but still not quite there in terms of fit IMO. Only people we have to blame is ourselves - more asians in the arts yo!

If you're looking for dialogue that's just as good (high drama, malleable characters, varied humor) I found Sports Night similar, not in setting, but definitely in writing.
Make sure to catch Nathan Fillion (Mal) in the first two seasons of Castle. Unfortunately that show kindof petered out after that point, but twenty four episodes of awesome is plenty.
Well I started watching at around 2 am, it is now 5pm and now that I'm done I might finally be allowed to sleep, so unfair that it got cancelled makes me sad.

i was literally typing this sentence out and looked up for half a second and saw elmizzt kindly did it for me. Broke my heart when I heard it got canceled.
I just watched the first episode of this, WOW! This show is awesome! Damn you Rupert Murdock! When I see the setting and the music I kinda feel like the SC2: WIngs of Liberty Campaign borrowed HEAVILY from this show. With the slide guitar and everything. So good.

I just watched the entire season + the movie in one sitting... I just couldn't stop! Damn you internet T_T
I really enjoyed "Out of Gas" the most, but the movie was also really well done. It just shows how awesome Firefly is with higher production value.
And yes, I was constantly getting Mass Effect vibes from it. I think it's because of how the story revolves around the captain and his interactions with the crew. Just like Mass Effect. (And the obvious reasons like it being in space ^^)

Firefly lives on. There's a new comic that go on since January 2014 but... Why bump a fucking 2pages 4year old thread ?
yes why ? Let me ask you a question :
"Have you ever sail in a firefly ?"
Well my friends and fellow fans... Apparently you are going to
