The title should be "Daigomi's Guide to Music" because this is going to be very subjective. However, if my name was at the start of the title you wouldn't be able to see what it was a guide to, and also, it says that the blog is by Daigomi at the end.

I like a lot of music, and I think that almost all genres of music can be enjoyed if you put some effort into it and learn to understand the culture behind it a bit more. I say almost all genres of music, because some genres are aimed simply at being accessible to as many people as possible, and making money. There's no ideology behind such music, little artistry, and no soul.

So, over the next few weeks I'll make new posts, each post with five of my favourite albums from a genre, and reasons why I like those specific cds. Also, I might give my own opinion on the genre, and say what I understand about the genre.

I know this is a very boring blog post, but I needed some kind of an introduction to what I'm planning, and I don't want to ruin one of the other posts with an introduction. The genres I'm planning to cover are:

    Classic Rock
    Classical
    Electronic
    Foreign
    Hip-Hop
    Indie
    Metal
    Post-Rock
    Prog
    Punk
    Miscellaneous

I know the genres are quite broad, but that's because it would be too much effort to sub-categorize all my music. Anyway, I'll be making my first post soon. Hope you guys enjoy some of the music, and you try out a few new genres.

Here's my last.fm page so long, if you want to look at some of the things I might be recommending: Link.

I totally agree with all of this. I don't think this was a boring blog at all, I'm really excited to read the coming installments.

If you need any help at classical music, I'll help you! I think it will be very hard to cover classical, as the only common the genre has is that it uses instruments and vocals.
Stuck.

Well, as you say, classical music will be difficult to cover, although that's kind of the purpose of the blog, to give people a quick introduction to a genre of music, and try to give some additional info on each thing and say why it is interesting.

Feel free to post your selection though, it's always nice to see what someone else thinks

I'm totally sure that you'll include "Punch Em In The Dick" by Juicy Karkass in the rap blog.

Yeah, I used Ishkur's guide when I started listening to electronic music. Very useful guide, although quite complex because it's so comprehensive.

ew Ishkur's Guide is a pile of trash, not a good representation at all of any of the genres and some are either made up and others of significance aren't even mentioned

i also think that "electronic" is a too vague category
that's like lumping every song that has singing into a category
you can't seriously consider Venetian Snares's "Pressure Torture" and Biosphere's "Poa Alpina" in the same category

See, that's the fun thing about it being my blog, I can in fact put anything together if I wanted to. Lumping IDM, psytrance, and d&b together is just as bad as putting sludge, melodeath, and nsbm together, or putting garage rock, indie folk, and electronic indie together. But see, that's what I'm planning to do. Because in all honesty, you can lump them all together just fine, they usually share the same basic ideologies, and musically only those who are really into the genres really care about the difference between their subgenres.

And as I said earlier, I used Isthkur's a lot when I started listening to electronic music to just give me a basic idea of what was going on, but after you reach a certain point in any genre I think you pretty much stop caring about the subgenres in any case. Or maybe that's just me. The point of genres for me, is to give a frame of reference for music, not to lock it into a specific set of traits. And I often feel that the frame of reference "metal" or "electronic" is more than enough to appreciate the music in.

Oh, and just to continue with what I said above, if you look at my use of genres then you'll see that I'm willing to use genres quite liberally. So, I have Sigur Ros in post-rock for instance, but I also have Don Caballero under post-rock. Neither of those bands are technically post-rock, but they are similar enough to the genre to be put under post-rock.

Haha, I have a fair amount of jazz, but try as I like I've never been able to get into it. Strangely, this is not because I don't think it can be appreciate if you understand it, but exactly the opposite. Just like with western classical music, there's too much understanding that's required to appreciate it properly, and I just haven't spent the time to get into it yet. Blues is on my list of genres to try next though.

Not a reggae fan? Oh well, looking especially forward to the electronic section. Hope you do a bit of differentiation, i.e. House, Trance and the other 'mainstream' sections.
