So yeah, I'm going to get a new graphics card, my 7600 gs is kinda shitty now. I haven't been paying much attention lately to the new cards and I was wondering, is the 8800 gt still the way to go, or are there better cards in the 9 series? I don't really like ati chipsets, only nvidia really. Price doesn't matter too much, maybe like $300 max, cheaper would certainly be better though. I'll probably end up buying from newegg.com. Any recommendations on which card?

If you're going Nvidia, then yeah, the 8800 is still basically the way to go, I think. However, beware, there have been reports of those chips (and all the chips of the higher-end nvidia cards, actually) failing recently.

Also, don't let my warning on chip failure dissuade you. Just buy EVGA and register your card with them when you get it. Then you'll have a lifetime warranty anyway so it doesn't matter if it fails

Well if you have pcie 8800gt gives great performance for like 120 bucks. so cheep and good of course there are better cards.

Nvidia cards
GeForce 9600 GT
8800 GT 512MB, 8800 GTS 512MB
9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+
GTX 260

They kinda fall in the price line with gtx 260 for about 300 after tax

top to bot bot being best in performance of course also being more expensive

Ati Radeon HD 4850 is 200 great performance but you're like me and dislike ati (frankly i don't like ati because their support is ehhh esp when it comes to widescreen res) 4870 of course is better but it would be about more then 300 so yeah...

make sure your power supply can handle a high end card... make sure it has a 6-pin PCI-E connector

Yeah just check with the card to see if it needs 1 or 2 i belileve the 260 needs 2 most power supplys now over 600 will have 2.

I've got a 8800 and I like it. It was pretty budget fitting and it does what I need it to do (Starcraft and CoD4, haha). The 8800 does have a problem with XFire and Starcraft though. You'll have to disable the in game chat for SC in XFire if you go with the 8800. I'm not sure about other cards though.

alright, well i don't use xfire so that shouldn't be a problem. anyways, i have a 500 watt psu so i should be fine, it has plenty of connectors. i'll check the actual connectors later.

so far it looks like i should get a 8800 gt, and i was leaning towards maybe a xfx or evga. any recommendations on this?

ATI 4870 x 2
Yes, that's right. My recommendation is the best.

I'd go with evga really it doesn't matter too much the gpus are made by nvidia all the manufacturer gets to do is put a heatsink and few connectors but evga is a truth worth brand. 150 is a bit steep for 8800gt but but its like 20 bucks steep so who cares?

Well, as I said, EVGA is a great choice because of their warranty. Because of that, I'd pretty much pick them over anyone else, no matter whether they actually get to do much with the card or not.

9800GX2 isnt the best card anymore in terms of performance, but it's still pretty high up there

everyone's got their preference, but IMO, MSI has the best cards because of copper

Last time I checked, XFX cards come with a double lifetime warranty, so you could sell it, then whoever bought it off you also gets a lifetime warranty

SILVER IS BETTER lol all cards have copper or copper alloys in them what's so special about that? i really hate when someone put gold conductor for like their usb shit when copper is not only better but cheaper in electrical matters.

Nvidia's stuff is always more expensive than ATI but is subpar comparing to ATI.

ATI 4850 beats 8800gts (i think ati is cheaper not sure)

ATI4870 beats gtx260 (ati cheaper too)

ATI4870x2 beats gtx280 ( ati cheaper too)

my recommendation is get the 4870. its enough for high end gaming.

Frankly alot of people have had bad experiences with ATI, and thus don't use ATI nvidia is more user friendly at lest with it comes with menus etc. and 4850 isnt cheaper then 8800GT.

Anyways he said he doesn't like ati chipsets. Neither do i don't care for them not allowing fixed aspect ratio scaling on their drivers. Some people don't like seeing games stretched out.

8800gt is enough for high end gaming hell only like crysis can kill 60fps on max at a reasonable res like 1280x1024 or smaller. Really anything over 200 bucks on a gpu is enthusiast level.
