Yeah and tests should be graded on either 100 or 0.
Obviously 1 2 3 4 5 gives you a range of flexibilities that up/down simply won't cut it. Some people take long time to make their blogs and I'm sure they want it rated carefully.

people have different rating systems. that's why the thumbs up/down system shines here.

1-5 rating is ambiguous. Does a 3 mean you're indifferent? Or does the number of NICE SHINY STARS represent how much you like it (meaning 1-star = "I like it a little")? I'd much prefer a -5~+5 scale. It's much clearer as to what the feedback means.

Thumbs up thumbs down leads to a community of groupthink where minority opinions are suppressed. I like the 1-5 star system since it seems to lead people to evaluate the quality of the post rather than just if they have a gut reaction to the post being agreeable/objectionable to them.

It also has the advantage of allowing an unpopular, yet high quality, post to reach the '5 star' status. In a thumbs-up thumbs-down system fewer stories tend to rise to the top due to the phenom I call (no idea if there is a real term for this) 'popularity snowball'. A good post gets a few thumbs up. This shoves it to the top for others to thumb it up. Since it is good it will receive mainly thumbs up and continue to rise. The bad thing is perhaps there are 10 other quality posts that aren't even getting looked at because too much attention is going to the 'stars' of the show. Thumbs Up is roughly the equivilant of: (numberOfViews)*(AverageStar >= 3)

Of course this reply puts the assumption that along with thumbs up comes some way to filter/sort by rating, which the blog section badly needs anyway IMHO. Without filter/sorting or at least showing the rating before opening the blog none of these rating systems really matter except for the self-gratification of the author (which I admit, I do feel better about making 5star posts than 1star posts.. This is a good thing since it just makes me put more effort into delivering quality rather than trash).

I disagree. 0 Stars isn't a real rating, it's just an indication that you haven't yet rated, or odn't plan to. 0 stars is indifference, where as 1 satar is something that's bad enough that you care enough to give it the lowest possible rating you can.
