Don't you hate it when someone waves and you don't know if there waving at you or the person behind you? Maybe it is only a problem for self conscious nerds, but I feel stupid waving back and then having them look at me funny.
Or worse, when an acquaintance of mine, who I actually happen to like, waved at me and I thought they weren't, so I ignored it and they got offended. If they were the usual jerk I wouldn't have cared, but it was a fairly nice person. Then I feel bad for all of French (Which I hate enough as it is)

I think looking behind you works because if you are right it makes perfect sense why you did it, and if you are wrong, at worst they think you are surprised they are waving at you, but you can smooth it over with the pending conversation.
