I am going to an Eagle Scout Court of Honor in a little while, and it made me wonder how many Eagle Scouts we have here on tl. I became Eagle in 2003. My Eagle Scout Service Project was to repaint two picnic pavilions at a nearby town park. When did you make Eagle? What was your service project? If you didn't make Eagle, what rank did you achieve? If you were never in the boy scouts, feel free to inquire.

This also reminds me of the scene from the movie Apollo 13 where Jim's elderly mother who can't remember crap is watching the tv while her son is trying to get back to Earth, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are watching with her and ask her "so, did Jim ever make Eagle Scout" and she immediately responds "yes he did."

btw pedojokes=ban.

wow woopy you got screwed. the two projects i know of from kids at my school were bird houses and then another kid did some sort of fund raising or cloth collecting for kids in detroit.

i dropped out after i made first class and went to florida keys for camping when i was 13.
i was tenderfoot for two years and then got second+first class in 2 months lulz

The purpose of the project is to lead boys in community service. Usually the Eagle does very little actual work himself. The more ambitious the project, the harder it is to let the boys do the work. I'm not saying it can't be done, but usually this semi-stable balance leads to a big disparity in the apparent worthiness of an Eagle Scout Project.

I built 4 bulletin boards for my local elementary school; had my court of honor ~year ago?

I know we have at least 2 other eagle scouts on tl.net, possibly 4 (counting on who I know is smurfing on TL.net).

i was in boy scouts till 8th grade....once i went from cub scouts to boy scouts i never even got to tender foot haha I was still a scout when i quit 3 years later.

camping trips were fun though.

now that i'm older i realize i have a lot of problems with the organization as a whole, but overall it was still a good experince.

In some areas of the United States being Eagle is quite a big deal. But where I live it must be easier or something because I know quite a few kids that have achieved it.

It's totally troop dependent. There are troops in affluent neighborhoods where you just pay your way to an being an Eagle scout. My friend was in one.

On the other hand, there are troops like the one I attended until 10th grade. A troop that had EXTRA requirements for each badge. A troop whose "elders" screwed me out of 2 merit badges because they were too stupid and incompetent to keep track of a few papers.

For the most part, I found the Boy Scouts to be a positive experience. I will never forget my state bird and flower, that's for sure.

But,

There was no f'ing way I was doing all that crap for the cooking merit badge (and some other one, I forget which now) AGAIN, GD it. At least, not 10th grade lazy-me. I said to hell with it, walked out that night, and never went back. For the record, I was Star going for Life.
Im tired of following my dreams, man. Im just going to ask them where theyre going and hook up with them later. -mh

I know when my uncle did his eagle back in the day he had to organize some big community event, forget what it was tho. Took him like 6 months plus to do it. I myself got to Boy Scouts but then quit.. Didnt have the dedication he did lol, he got like every high honor you can get and now he has a lot of his stuff on display along with other stuff in his basement.

What is an eagle rank? No, I know nothing of boy scouts. Yes, it makes me chuckle a bit.

I'm having my court of honor in about 7 weeks

I slacked off way too much trying to get Eagle, but since I got Life when I was 14 I had plenty of time

Edit: oh and my Eagle project involved clearing out a bunch of weeds and old shrubs in the front yard of an old museum, then placing down weed mat and laying a bunch of bark chips over the matting.

In reality the project itself was easy, the hardest/most time consuming part was convincing a bunch of stores why they should donate all the materials I needed ($600 total (I was surprised that bark chips and weed mat were that expensive)) to this project.

LOL!! I was in cub scouts then went to boy scouts and never got out of Tenderfoot for like a year or two. I shoulda got second-class but instead of going to summer camps I would just leave on vacation for the whole summer....I don't regret b/c we would go on monthly camping trips so 15+ camping trips for me was fun enough....I basically was in it b/c my neighborhood friends were in it that I hung out with daily so I was like "why not"...Fun experience.

For those of you saying Eagle is no big deal, that is probably true to some extent in certain areas (as pointed out above) but according to the program at today's ceremony, ~3% of scouts make it to Eagle.

At my ceremony, they said it was 2%, so I guess the number is getting bigger. I wonder if LR is an Eagle, he never said if he is or not.

I became an Eagle Scout back in 2005. I did a project concerning fire hydrants and telephone poles - since it snows a lot in the winter, plows/people shovel in the fire hydrants so my basis was it'd help a) avoid this problem in the winter and b) help the fire department find them if people still shovel them in. The hardest part, I feel, is the donations. That was such a bitch going to all the different places -.-

I loved BSA. I still go camping/hiking/kayaking whenever I can which unfortunately, isn't much.

You start at ~12-13 years old and age out as a youth when you turn 18. Getting all the way to eagle requires a large amount of camping and other work (but varies somewhat from troop to troop and area to area).

Here's a list of all the requirements needed to get through each rank.
http://www.usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/bsranks.asp
Everyone starts out rankless, but usually get Scout by their first meeting since it's not really hard. Then getting up to First Class should take about a year or year and a half depending on how much time you choose to put into it and how willing the troop is to help you (or how willing they are to just give it to you, I'm not gonna deny that there are some troops where obtaining Eagle is pretty easy =/).

Then obtaining Star and Life require mostly merit badges (everything else will pretty much be taken care of if you're active in the troop). Some troops (and/or parents since anyone can become a merit badge councilor, you just need to file in the appropriate paper work) will practically give away the merit badges, some troops will actually add requirements. So the difficulty of rising through the ranks vary with the troop. In my troop we followed strictly by the book, so it was about average.

Then getting Eagle is probably the hardest, since not only do you need a lot more merit badges (actually that should be easy assuming you go to the summer camps/don't slack off), but you have to organize a service project that benefits the general community.

This involves first finding an organization that would need the help. Then writing up a report describing what it is you plan to do, how you plan to do it, the materials you need, an approximate budget of how much it'll cost you and if you'll be able to get donations, and why the community will benefit from this project. Then you have to go to a committee meeting of the adult leaders and present it to them there so they approve it and sign off on it (or you can just go to each committee member separately and have them sign it off one by one).

Then you actually do the project, the difficulty of which depends almost entirely on what you chose to do. Some people paint fences, others restore Vietnam era warships.

Then you do a board of review which is essentially just an interview between you and a few council members. If you've gotten this far already this last part is probably just a formality. After this they mail all your stuff to the national office where it'll get approved (assuming everything is filed correctly) and they'll mail all your stuff to the council office where you can go pick it up. Then you have your Court of Honor (isn't 100% required, but it's very much encouraged) which is a formal ceremony where they award you your badge.
