So, 1 litre petrol = 1.22 EUR.
My shitty opel astra 92 burns 12l/100km.
To and back to work are 25kms. 25x5=125kms per week just to go to work.
125x4 = 500kms per month.
Add at least 200kms going somewhere else during the month.
That makes it at least 700kms per month.
7x12 = 84 litres. 84 x 1.22EUR ~ 100 EUR just for petrol.
The average salary in Bulgaria is 300 EUR (communism FTW). So one third of my money goes for petrol. Thats ridicilous.

What does Communism have to do with the average salary? You must be confusing with Socialism.

The funny thing is that many economists and politicians claim that euro has lowered the oil price increase.
HAHAHAH good joke.
I'm also quite shocked by the huge wage disparity between France and Bulgaria. I hope that one day all the countries in the European Union will have the same average wage.

The current state of all easter european countries is due to the many years of communism regime. Thats what I meant.

With the current, retarded EU/European governments policies (increased VAT in such countries as Germany, forced biofuel production causing food prices to go up - because there is not enough land etc.) it will probably mean that people in France earning as much as people in Bulgaria, not the opposite..
Euro-zone is so weird, the taxes on everything are so incredibely high - fuel in USA is like half price as in the EU methinks (I always wonder how is EU still able to compete with USA). I always thought that taxes in Poland were high, but after joining to UE, nearly all excise taxes (fuel, alcohol, cigarettes) went up - by quite high ammounts. Ok, alcohol and cigarettes are not "first need" items and they would probably be manufactured in Poland - and sold to other countries, but currently, the accession actually harms people in Poland - because they will have to pay more. It basically has touched all fuels methinks (petrol, LPG, oil used to heat houses..). Food prices went up, due to the biofuel policies. They are talking about harmonizing VAT and CIT - which would probably mean going up, not down (VAT in Russia is 13% I think, while in the EU it has to be between 15-25% according to country - they will probably make it German 19% level (on the other hand its 22% in Poland, so it would be a decrease)). I believe that in many countries people are cheating on VAT, which is like the worst tax ever for small companies. I think in Italia and Poland there is a big grey sector caused by this tax. Basically VAT is a tax that just asks everyone to try to evade taxation..
btw. A Japanese car (toyota etc) in Poland costs like 40-50% more than in the USA.. WTF
Speaking of euro itself - I have no idea for which country is it good. I mean Germany broke the deficit level I think and noone cared about it - in theory this caused a big problem for the euro and Germany should be fined by the EU - but it was not. Such policies are not provided to smaller coutries. So why would these countries care? I mean, how can one lead a monetary policy for like 15 countries in the euro-zone? They all have different econmies and different stages. I dont believe in monetary policy that much, but I dont understand how is euro good both for Germans and Greeks for example. These countries are totally different.
I actually travel by public transport as I dont own a car - I actually like travelling by tram, because I can sleep there.. But you probably found the most suitable job for you and you have to travel there each day..

You get what you deserve. Mother nature is not stupid, she won't let you do whatever you want. Millions of cars sweep the earth, gazillions of cash you will have to pay. Be grateful that driving a car cost you your wallet and not your life - yet. Better sell it. But you're probably too comfortable with your way of life to do that. You probably believe you need a car, even if you actually don't. Whatever, do what you want but do not cry when you have to pay the bill.

Yawn. Liberal fearmongerer. Why're you posting on the internet instead of saving trees somewhere?

I'm not driving a car and I never will, instead I'm riding a bike e.g. to buy most of the stuff I need since it also keeps me fit. I turn out the lights when they aren't needed for more than a few minutes. I buy mostly natural products and I separate waste. I have the right to blame car-drivers. What about you?

Hrmm well I dont know all the conversions to USA but I am spending about 1/3 of my paycheck to gas as well...Sad thing is I'm from Texas and there is so many trucks/SUV's that people fill up about $80+ bucks just to fill up there tank...I have to put that much during the week I can just imagine how many times they might have to do it? Maybe twice? Sometimes I cringe to drive.

i just use my bicycle, n will probably never get a car, cause cars are a fucking hassle and you dont really need em here anyway.

Bobilion, there will never be equal wages across Europe because the cost of living is different in every country. The average wage in Bulgaria is still much less, but it's not as bad when you factor in PPP.
The euro is a silly thing. No offense to our eastern bloc friends, but it makes no sense that the EU accepted them and not Turkey, with a much stronger economy.

Yeah sure, just because I'm not living extreme I cannot blame people who drive cars. That makes sense, or wait, it actually makes it easier for you because you can now ignore my point. If I'm not perfect you don't have to change anything, don't even think about doing it. Way to go, keep up!

I really would like to live without a car someday. I live in St. Charles MO, about 25 miles or so from actual St. Louis. I think the total area which I inhabit while I'm here (between friends houses, work, entertainment, etc) is probably upwards of 40 miles. It's ridiculous.
I want to move to either an urbanized area or a suburb very close to a city where public transit is great and most of what you need it within walking/biking distance. Seattle, maybe? Boston? Don't know. But I am really sick of the drive-everywhere-you-go lifestyle.

Mmm Western European countries are culturally closer to Bulgaria than to Turkey.
1) Moreover Turkey ----> muslims and many people here dont want a country with 70 000 000 muslims in Europe especially since it is ruled by the AKP biggots.
2) Another big country like Turkey in Europe means even more bureaucratic bs.
3) Turkey has frontiers with Iraq and Iran :O + add the problem about Kurdistan.
So Turkey wont ever be accepted.

Be grateful over here avg salary is 5000 pesos, roughly 125 US. A galon of gas is about 180 pesos, whic is about 5US. You do the math

Oh, I already know the reason is largely due to discrimination. Islam in Turkey is a lot like Christianity in the US - most Turks aren't religious. The AKP are bad, but it's kind of like neoconservatives in Western countries. They'll die down again as living conditions improve. It is different culturally, but it's pretty similar to Greece/Italy, only with more competence. D:
If it came down to economics though, it would be pretty useful to invite them. Joining the EU might actually be detrimental to Turkey's economy, but the government still wants in anyways.

Yeah it is tough, and to correct thats actually the minimum wage, not the avg. But still even for people with good paying jobs, its pretty rough. We have about 3US in taxes ONLY. >_<

My first computer I had to carry in a damn bag all the way home, took me about half an hour of walking, talk about having fun in your free time. I get food and clothes with my bike or by using public transport. It is hard sometimes (with the bike) but I can add that to doing sports. Shelter (if it's too big to carry alone) is another story, I remember my mother used a friend's car in such a case but since I do not plan on getting a driver's license I'm gonna use delivery service. Still way cheaper than using a car because that would only be needed about once a year. My mother got a car a few years ago which made us have a few arguments because I hate cars. They stink and they make people lazy. Their emissions are bad for our health, it's like passive smoking and nobody complains about it. Ridiculous! It's ok if other people don't care about their health so much but I do!. Don't make me sick, people! Sometimes I'm glad if someone drives me a few miles somewhere in his car when I'd have to pay money otherwise but I do that only about once every month I think. If they had to take a much longer path I wouldn't do this either, I think I can justify it that way. Doesn't really make me feel better about it anyway.
I hope you see now that I am not playing the oil game. If I was to be a nature freak I'd have to live in the woods which I don't want. I grew up in a city so I'll stay in a city most of my life. In a city you just cannot live 100% natural but at least I'm trying my best. Can you say that about yourself?
I mean, it's not like I'm saying you shouldn't use a car at all (ok actually I am saying that...) but you could at least try not to use it so much anymore. Try to use it occassionally. Like when you have to go 5 miles, use the bike. Why not? I don't see a good reason to use a car in such a case except for your comfort! You don't have to act as a role model, I only ask you to change your mind a little bit and think about mother nature a little bit more. Reduce what you can afford to reduce. Combine the need with the good and ride a bike, you get your food and you get fit at the same time. Your body will thank you for it and your wallet as well! Motivation enough? Don't just think about doing it - do it!

Is there public transit available? Within bike distance?
Honestly I can not relate to the situation that well, I make my monthly gas cost in 2 hours (yay for tiny car + fat american salary), but if something was taking 1/3 of my monthly income I would try very hard to see if I could get by without it.

Suburbia is an awful, awful thing.
1. Huge boring lawns requiring pesticides, fertilizer, and tons of water. You can have a much more interesting garden that requirse a lot less maintenance and more importantly resources. 2. Big houses in the middle of nowhere so you have to drive everywhere. 3. Every street is named after a tree or forest or something natureish. Where is the forest the street is named after? Bulldozed to make room for houses.
Add in the fact that suburbs are on lands just outside the city, where fertile farmlands used to be. Only a small % of the earth is actually suitable for farmland, and a lot of it is being converted for this suburban life. This is possible to do cause you can just ship food across the fucking world instead. Yeah more gas used there. There's a food crisis going on too.
Suburbia doesn't work if we're going to try to stop climate change and deal with the energy crisis. It's funny cause families often choose to move out there for "the fresh air".

Op is right, some people, specially those that drive 30 or more minutes to work, in a country that has rudimentary public transport in most of its territory are really hurting (USA in my case, but unless you live in a city or a small & very developed nation public transport tends to suck).
