For my Cell and Molecular class we had to take our cheek cells process them to get them ready to get our DNA sequence code. We sent them out to a Lab where they sequence your DNA and tell you where your ancestry is from. Just got the results in and....

apparently I'm southeast Asian/Australian (Oceania). I went from being 100% Mexican to Asian, not a bad trade off, but what should I do with this new self discovery? :p

At some point in humanity, someone will be able to take that sequence and recreate =p

Don't tell the school, or they might cut off your affirmative action and financial aid benefits :D.

Or you can play more BW to celebrate your newfound heritage.

This sounds like one of those services that do crazy stuff. Like for example, I once got a flier where they were selling stars in the sky. Like you could buy a star, I'm like wtf....

Anyway, your genetic code is so long that it will reach the moon and back many many times if you were to unstring completely. The fact that they can tell you your heritage based on like a hundred base pairs is not believable. It would also be mega-expensive if they were to analyze your full dna just to find this info. Can you link me to the site of the company that does this please? I am very intrigued.

edit: Also, the "N"'s are not errors. It just means that the machine could not read the base pair. DNA sequencing is done using machines nowadays which use dideoxy nucleotides (ddNTPS) that randomly terminate amplified dna from PCR which are separated using gel electrophoresis to come up with the sequence. The ddNTPs have a fluorescent dye that emits a specific wavelength of light when an argon laser beam passes through it, which is read by the machine and creates a graph. When the wavelength cannot be recognized clearly, an "N" appears.

Lol they managed to determine your ancestry from a couple hundred of bases? Would be nice if it were real though.

I kind of forgot about this, I'm not sure how exactly they did it, I think they might have just sequenced a certain part, maybe mitochondrial? Don't pay too much attention in the class to be honest :p.

But if you don't believe me:

http://www.bioservers.org/bioserver/index1.html --> Login --> Login as Guest --> Manage Groups --> Kathy Kresge --> OK --> Student 14 --> Analyze

I'll be honest website is shitty, but they should at least be able to do their job right...
