So after a lengthy application process that involved taking an actual class to even apply in the first place, going through a 30 minute interview, then talking with various leaders, I finally found out today that I'm going to be an RA!

The funny thing is that my RA position is at the same dorm I lived in last year as a freshman.

For those that don't know, RA's are basically leaders of the floors, they do all sorts of things from programming building events, but they also have to do disciplinary action like writing people up for alcohol possession, etc.

On the plus side, I get free housing and free meal plan!

To any TLers planning on attending USC next year, put down Marks Tower as your dorm choice and I might be your RA. ^^

nah i'm actually planning on being a good RA that tries to plan stuff, have a good floor atmosphere, etc.

my family makes < $30K a year for 4 people, so i'm definitely not spoiled.

actually, my dad is going to be changing jobs and starting a new church in atlanta, which means that our income will effectively be close to zero.

part of the reason why i'm doing this is because my family really needs me relieve the financial burden of higher education. but hey, with this on top of university and federal grants and stuff totaling quite a bit over 40K it isn't too bad.

eh, all-male floor and i have a long-term gf so i'm not really interested in that

hey this is kind of private but how does your financial aid work? do they just go like $30k total, and give you like $15k grant and then take off additional $5k or so off since you get free housing? or do they go $30k - $5k for free housing and then -$10 for financial aid so that your family pays the same amount? i guess my question is, is your financial aid affected by your reduced total? i'm asking this because i thought the way financial aid was calculated was by determining the maximum amount your family should pay.

and congrats on being an RA. my freshman RA was super tight and i hung out with him a lot.

But it's surprising how much federal grants give you. And from an earning potential point of view, it's worth every penny.
