I've thought about blogging many times, but always decided against it. Now, I just have to write somewhere and don't know where else to go to get out my feelings, so I guess this is as good as a place as any other.

Just got warning today that there has been an anonymous tip at my school , Western Illinois University, that there will be a school shooting today. I really don't understand why people ever get to this point, but it scares the shit out of me. My fiancee just headed off to class, and I'm really worrying. I have work and class today, even a test, and I am torn on whether or not I should go. There is no penalty for missing today, but we can't let these idiots control our life. With that being said, I don't want to lose my life, or the live of my fiancee.

You always think, that won't happen at my school, or hope that people that attend your school are better than that. After NIU, it got closer to home, started to worry me, but it was still 3.5 hours away. Thats still not my school. Now it is though, now its my school

Fuck that man, don't risk it. Agreed with above, while it would be nice to ignore em, it aint worth risking your life.

That really sucks.. I wouldn't go. There was a bomb warning at my school (what, even in Canada!?), at the beginning of this year.. it was a super sketchy tip (a threat written on a bathroom wall), and nothing happened, but why even risk it? No advice other than stay home and keep in close touch with your fiancee. Hope everything goes alright.

Okay, we're both home and are definitely not going out. Everything is starting to get canceled. I want to just keep thinking its a hoax, but there is no reason to take a chance. Hopefully they find the asshole that did this shit. I guess a local highschool around the area got a threat today too...just sickening.

I'm not sure where WIU stands on concealed carry, but I'd at least look into it. Or I can do it for you, if you'd like. If you're not into that, don't go. Chances are it's just some tool's idea of a prank, but if it isn't, I'd think you'd agree that it's better to be alive at the end of the day instead of being on the list of names at tonight's vigil.

I totally agre with you and that is why I have decided not to attend classes. As far as the concealed weapon, I don't know where I stand on my views of gun laws etc, but I don't know how productive it would be to have people carrying concealed weapons on a college campus. Yes, most would probably have to have a permit for it, but just because you know who has a gun doesn't mean that you can stop them from doing something with it. I heard a saying somewhere, and I agree with it: If you outlaw guns then only outlaws will have guns. So I don't think banning guns is the cure. I still dont' think that carrying my own gun would solve anything though.

On some level, I do agree. I mean, in most states, people can go through the process to become legally licensed to carry a concealed weapon on their person as long as it's not visible, and that's good. Crime rates typically go down, as criminals aren't sure who possesses the means to defend themselves, and who doesn't. And yes, concealed weapons are legally and successfully used all the time to defend against physical or sexual assault, but it doesn't completely solve the problem.

Let's face it: stupid people aren't going to be stopped by intelligent, law-abiding citizens. Check your PMs.

I was in class at the University of Minnesota one day when there was a bomb threat. I remember sitting in Differential Geometry, and I'm like "I know this class is boring, but where is everybody?" and the kid next to me is like "There was a bomb threat, so class is optional today." I stayed for the class, and skipped the next one (not because of the bomb threat, but because I always skipped that class).

Turned out it was a fake bomb threat, and the guy who threatened it was arrested. But wouldn't I feel stupid if I were dead now? I knew there was a much increased likelihood of a bomb exploding, and I honestly wouldn't have been a bit surprised if it were the math building. Plus we went over the exact same material in the next lecture.

Moral of the story: Don't go to class when it's optional.

I've never really understood the reasoning for people to kill their own species. I mean I understand if you have to compete with each other for food or something, but why just shoot people on impulse?

Don't even start with that. I'll win the argument, and I won't even have to use derogatory language!

This is one of those rare cases in modern society where you have to decide how much you value your liberty, at the expense of personal safety.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -Benjamin Franklin

Of course, this isn't exactly what me meant, but the principle is the same.

Most of us (including me) would probably not go to class... and would essentially enable pranksters to piggyback on the fear of real threats, but it's at the expense of allowing them to win.

I'm not just talking out of my ass... my high school had a school shooting threat, and I went to school that day. But since the circumstances were fairly low risk, I didn't do what I probably would have done in your situation today. (There was a message posted in the bathroom in like March that said "If you thought Columbine was bad, wait till June 1st") I guess we all will just handle it case by case.

You make two fatal assumptions: (1) People who mindlessly kill others are of sound mind; (2) People who mindlessly kill others have meaningful motives.

Columbine, VT, and NIU lacked shooters who were of sound mind or had meaningful motives. They didn't kill in self-defense or for basic survival. They wanted to be famous.

Exactly. It's better to be safe and dodge a potential disaster rather than attend class because it might just be a "joke." That message is actually pretty scary.

We had a similar copycat remark on the boys' bathroom when I was in eighth grade following the Columbine shooting.
