Ok, recently as finals are coming, and I have shit load of work to do, I find a need to stay up very late without falling asleep ANY BIT. But being the person I am, the maximum time I can stay up is 10:30, which is embarassing. So any tips or advice to staying up late, and brutally opressing any sleep urges?

Lots of soda, sugar, caffeine, energy drinks, and cocaine...preferably all at once.

don't stay up late if you can't

sleep is far more important than studying

if you are convinced you need to stay up to work, just get up early instead

I prefer to sleep usual time, and wake up earlier to do all my work. Way earlier.

keep lights on, drink a soda or energy drink, don't "rest your eyes", don't keep looking at the time

idk what else to suggest, i never really have a problem staying awake >_<

I found that soda only gives me a momentary feeling of being awake. I'd recommend eating carbs like bread and pasta, which are a longer lasting form of energy.

A few things I do is go outside, take a walk or go for a light jog while trying to go over key points in your head (especially when it's cold). Have some hard candy or gum when you're feeling tired (or chocolate if you're not worried about all the fat that's in it). Stretching and washing your face also helps. But if you're really sleepy and you just can't stand it, sleep for a few hours. You'd make more progress when you wake up than if you don't sleep at all.

I wish I had this problem, I have the opposite problem. I don't know if I am technically an insomniac, but I never go to sleep before 4 or 5 am. Even when I do get in bed, I still wont fall asleep for at least an hour. I've gotten used to it, since I was like that all through high school and so far through college, but I really wish I could sleep regularly. But I would say, as others said, if your body wants to go to sleep at 10:30, let it, and wake up earlier. People rarely get quality work done as efficiently when their body wants sleep or food or whatever.

I'm a normal, I go to sleep around 2am most of the time(mostly because of homework), and could stay up later, but I have school. Surprisingly on the weekends I sleep before 12.

turn the light on, and have some cofee, don't lay down, and have the same mentality as you would have when anticipating a LIVE EVER OSL 2007 FINAL BROADCAST!!!

not looking at the time is a pretty good tip, i have such a hard time with that
its like impossible for me to study without looking at the clock every 2 minutes :| i dunno why i always wait till the last minute for this shit

but tbh i think energy drinks+mass caffeine might be a bad idea, like day said sleep is more important, if you study so much that you'll be dead tired the next day whats the point? also, caffeine and sugar drinks tend to only give me a slight push, followed by a big slump in energy.

staying awake is all mental. you can pop 3 caffeine pills but if you don't want to stay awake badly enough, you won't be able to. lol, but if you want products, red bull works like a charm. you'll get over the bad taste, and eventually end up liking it.

I usually shower when I start getting tired and drinking something hot also helps me.
Like, if I need to stay up until 3, I will shower at like 12 and drink tea constantly.

I disagree. I've written some of my most brilliant shit when I'm sleep deprived and can barely go on. It's not something I do very often, but it helps for important papers and finals. Then again, I think I need that feeling of desperation to really get going.

I don't do anything besides caffeine though.

then wake up at 4am, drink a good cup of coffe and here you go!
i used to do that for studying and it's a better idea, cuz in the morning your brain is fresh

err..conditioning sucks. what you do is you partion the night and take siestas instead.

for example last week i got up really early to do some work, slept one hour around lunch, then i fell asleep again (by accident) at 7pm only to wake up at 10pm. After that i was not sleepy at all and stayed up studying until 8.30 in the morning (had breakfast at 4.30). The next day I woke up at 12.30, not worse than a really lazy weekend.

Get a late night job, working somewhere you absolutely have to stay up because its extremely stressfull. Staying up will be your least problem in no time...


Getting up in the morning might be your next one though ;-)

sleep for 4 hours and then get back up. 12 hours later, do It again. This is a more efficient way of sleeping rather than the standard 16 hours awake 8 hours asleep routine. You end up gaining an extra couple of hours a day in awake time, without feeling tired. The only problem is that this rythm will mean that you are not synced with the rest of the world.

Staying up is only good if you're in the middle of something and on a roll. Otherwise, get a good nights sleep and go at it in the morning again, late nights and lack of sleep make me less concentrated and motivated to do stuff in general.

Hide all your clocks, close blinds, and turn on all lights. Your topic ttile is ironically very correct. In human psychology light levels are subtle cues to your brain that its sleepy time. I've seen studies that allowed people to stay awake nearly all night as long as the subjects were kept busy and unaware of the time. Sort of explains how I can lose so many hours playing SC...

But yeah, often by studying without a good amount of sleep will do a lot less good than getting some sleep, getting up early, and cramming it in.
