Maybe u've been chatting with very emotive girls? or shy ones who feel like adding an emoticon in every sentence.

But i don't think it's about gender here, i've seen lots of girls who don't use emoticons and boys who use them alot (i also like to use them alot).

In a regular day an average female will talk aprox. 50% more than your average male (i read that in a study once, sorry can't remember link).

EDIT: I remember the same study I was talking about mentioning precisely that in environments such as IM, girls tend to use more emoticons.
