Inspired by someone making his list, I decided to make one of my own.
1. Exodus. This one stands out compared to all the others for me. Awesome Thrash the way it was meant, especially the live version of their first album, titled 'Another lesson in Violence'. Even after Paul Baloff, Steve Souza picked up the line nicely. Unfortunately, they currently have a singer that really doesn't fit them.

2. Testament. This is the only thrash band that gets close to what Exodus has done for me, thrash-wise. The New Order was and will always be an awesome album, and they still rock live. Going to see them at 8-23, wee!

3. Dream Theater. This seems really out of place, but they make brilliant progressive metal, really standing out with extraordinary riffs, chores, and it just has a magical feel to it.

4. Iron Maiden. Placing them this low is practically already blasphemy, but oh well. I didn't even appreciate them that much, until I saw them live. You can't be a true Maiden fan until you've seen them live. They were AWESOME. Number of the Beast is my favorite album of them, though Fear of the Dark comes close.

5. Agalloch. Awesome Melodic Doom Metal with very philosophical lyrics. Truly a band you have to listen to if you haven't already.

6. Edguy. They recently went more commercial, but they were awesome a while back. Especially their first two albums, Savage Poetry (1995) and Kingdom of Madness were truly great albums, although Mandrake was great too. Their concert of Live at Isenhallen Umea is great too.

7. Tie between Megadeth and Metallica. Both bands have a history together, and I would rate them about equally. Ride the Lightning is an awesome album, and so are S&M and Master of Puppets. Megadeth has consistently made good songs, with their best album being Rust in Peace. I can't really pick a favorite between these two.

9. Blind Guardian. I'm only putting this here because of Battallions of Fear, because this was their only awesome album they have made. Recently, they started commercialising as well, and I don't really like any of their new songs, so it's mostly their old albums that do it for me.

10. Heathen. A very underrated thrash band that never truly got anywhere due to problems between the band members. However, they have created two outstanding albums in the short while that they did exist, and should be commended for it.

As you can see, I mostly included Thrash bands. What are your opinions? Post them here!

Exodus are kick-ass. Actually I didn't really listen to their older albums but I heard one cd a few years back and it kicked ass!
Since I'm a fan of hardcore/punk, I love how Exodus thrash metal is aggressive and fast.

Blind Guardian rules too, sick band. I saw them live in Sweden like 6 years ago supporting the "A night at the opera" tour and I was blown away. The band were all down-dressed and I didn't know what to expect but they were incredible, they didn't move much but the sound was awesome and they do their thing. When the audience acts as the large choruses on songs like Nightfall and Times stand till I ejaculated in my pants.
There were a ridiculous amounts of chills going up and down my spine and I felt like I was in a random elven forest in Middle Earth, listening to the most beautiful music ever created.

Ok, that sounded very D&D:ish, but I don't give a fuck, it was a magical show.

Burzum are good too. I mean, not good as in great sound or awesome guitarwork, but I love norwegian black metal and the grim atmosphere those bands create.

Satyricon are one of my favourite bands, norwegian black metal band as well and they have released some great music. The cd:s "The Shadowthrone" and "Nemesis Divina" are fucking masterpieces in my opinion and a perfect introduction for anyone to norwegian black metal.

Iron Maiden was my first love, ever since I first listened to a friends older sisters cd when I was 8 years old.
That's right folks, I'm old school and true to the game. I've been listening to metal since I was 8 and I'm 28 now.
Metal bands like Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, then later on I fell in love again....with Hardcore and bands like Sick of it all, Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Madball.

Today I mainly listen to old hardcore/punk (fuck most metalcore bands), mainly from the NYC and Boston areas and some metal, mostly obscure black metal or Stratovarius/Blind Guardian.

I also dig alot of hip-hop.

Children of Bodom were awesome up until Hatecrew Deathroll, which is a really bad name for a cd btw.
Something wild, Hatebreeder and Follow the reaper are awesome cd:s and what Bodom are to me, a melodic death/black/heavy-metal hybrid, with great guitarwork.

Nowadays I don't listen to them anymore though cuz I think their latest releases suck ass. They got bit by the "nu"-metal bug or something.

Amorphis are a fucking great band from the land of the thousand lakes, Finland.
They play atmospheric death/doom-metal and incorporate alot of old finnish folklore, melodies and instruments into their songs.
One of my favourite bands, because the music is very beautiful and full of emotion. They sound a bit similar to Dark Tranquility and old In Flames.

I guess I'll reply to this.

Lex, this is Logan btw.
Agalloch is not melodic doom death.
They are "Gray" metal. Mixture of Acoustic and Black Metal.

Now for my list I guess.

#1 Behemoth - Awesome Death/Black metal. The new album absolutely slays. Fast drumming and fills galore.

#2 Nile - As technical as they come. Karl Sanders is a amazing guitarist. George Kolias pulls shit off that I have no idea how it's humanly possible.

#3 Napalm Death - As a old band, you usually get worse as you go, but with Napalm they get better. They went from neanderthal grindcore (yes that is a genre) to groovy death metal. Awesome.

#4 Abysmal Torment - Chunky Brutal Death metal. The drummer doesn't quit. The guitarist writes good riffs. All's good.

#5 Cryptopsy - AMAZING drummer. Flo is just a beast. Their riffs are entertaining and off the wall, and keep you listening.

#6 Nargaroth - BLACK METAL IST KRIEG! Some of the best black metal in the vein of Burzum you can get.

#7 Nachtmystium - Amazing USBM. Great guitar play. Good use of jazzy guitar solos. Quite different.

#8 Mayhem - Just released one of their greatest albums. The production may be shit, but it sounds fucking awesome. Hellhammer reached a new level in drumming, while Blasphemer has finally come to be as good as Euronomynous, if better.

#9 Blood Tsunami - Thrash metal band with Faust, old drummer of Emperor, whom are the greatest symphonic black metal band in existence. Great riffs. Sounds awesome. Old school :D.

#10 1349 - Black metal with a kick. Always going 100 MPH. Tears shit apart. Frost is a absolute beast behind the drumkit here.

ZZang, 1349 are very cool. Have you heard the song "I breathe spears"? It's so intense, and yea Frost rules! So does Satyricon obviously

I dislike all the bands except Agalloch on your list. Agalloch has a nice atmosphere and sadness in their music, please do not compare them with crap bands such as Exodus, Metallica and Iron Maiden...

i mostly listen to old bands
my list of favourite rock band would go like this:

#1 Iron Maiden
#2 Judas Priest
#3 Deep Purple
#4-10 AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Whitesnake, RHCP, Led Zeppelin

There are more bands that i love and don't remember now but these are my favs.
Guess i'm one of the few who listen to this type around here .

Here's mine since we're all sharing:
#1 Adorior - Pretty obscure but insanely technical 7 string death/black metal from England. They have a very attractive female lead singer, but there's no estrogen drenched gothic bewailment of lovers lost or enchanted forests of unicorns, just blazingly fast, hate fillled audio defilement. myspace.com/adorior
#2 Evoken Doom/Death/Funeral Doom from the most unlikely place, Lyndhurst New Jersey. Upon seeing they were from New Jersey, one automatically has to assume it's some urbane city kids playing the latest metalcore/deathcore trendy stuff, but these guys are approaching their 40s and playing the bleakest funeral doom that would make any Swede or Englishman proud. Their latest album isn't too great, but I'd highly recommend Embrace the Emptiness or Quietus to anyone who has a remote interest in metal. Their myspace just has 2 minute samples of an upcoming album, but their sounclick here: has some nice full length tracks including an Iron Maiden tribute.
#3 Isis Post Metal/Sludge, whatever you wanna call it. I can't get enough of the early sludgey albums, but all their later, more post rock/metal stuff is pretty addicting as well. Lyrical fascination with mosquitos/ants/bees and comparison to the human condition is deeply philosophical.
#4 diSEMBOWELMENT Old schoolers from Australia that helped pioneer the death/doom genre along with the peaceville 3 and Winter. Very Grind influenced and much more just a really slow death/grind band than a "beautiful" doom band with alot of keys and melodic elements. Really just ugly and gritty sounding, and yet strangely amient and hypnotic. They split up in 1993.
#5 Indesinence UK Death/Doom/Funeral doom, shares a drummer with Indesinence. Deeply influenced by Evoken and Disemowelment, alot more intense and death metal influenced than most modern doom/death metal. They sound a little like the My Dying Bride album, As the Flower Whithers.
#6 Agalloch A little difficult to listen to in 120+ degrees summers in Arizona and definitely more enjoyable in the winter, but still a great folk/doom/black/post rock whatever you wanna call it band.
#7 Sinister From Holland, these guys helped invent death metal and they're practically never credited with it. Lead singer on the albums up to 1996 is the best death metal vocalist imo.
#8 Suffocation From New York, Death Metal's most plagiarized act, nuff said. Argued to have invented to blastbeat.
#9 Velvet Cacoon - From Portland, Oregon, they're still shrouded in mystery and scandal. They plagiarized several dreampop/ambient folk records and passed them off as their own, invented fake albums that were never released, and came up with an elaborate dieselharp hoax. Regardless, their Genevieve album, which is best characterized as ambient black metal, if it is even their work, is hypnotic and addictive.
#10 Devin Townsend - Rather lighthearted prog/atmostpheric metal, latest album, Ziltoid the Omniscient is a unique concept. It's a sci-fi parody... and a metal album... just check it out!

yay, metal

1) Iron Maiden - just the best
2)Dismember - Death metal hurricane with killer melodies
3)At The Gates - Thrash Death at its best, RIP ATG
4) In Flames (old) - Jester race is just MDM perfection
5) Graveworm - black metal/gothic, a excellent atmospheric band
6) Dark Lunacy - MDM/gothic, just recently got this one, it made a big impact and i like it very much
8) Bal Sagoth - The kings of symphonic metal
9) Summoning - symphonic black metal with LoTr lyrics
10) Sonata Arctica - excellent band for easy listening
11) Darkseed - german gothic metal band, ever so nice

there are a lot more bands, and these are probably not the very favorites, but are the ones im listening the most to currently.

Fear factory has a special place in my heart as my first really heavy band that opened all sorts of gateways.
