The first album I ever "purchased" was Linkin Park's "Hyrbrid Theory."
I was 11 and in Sam Goody with my dad. Being a typical tween, I didn't want to tell him what I was looking for. I just kept walking around the aisles looking for what I wanted.

My dad kept asking me what I was looking for and I kept on telling him, {i'll know it when i see it}

10 minutes pass and I'm probably in the R&B section. My dad continues-- "will you tell me the first letter?"

I say, probably with a lot of tween angst, "L"

I keep looking. I couldn't find what I was looking for.

My dad prods again, "What does it end in?"

Still annoyed that my dad is within 100 ft of me, a tween, I scoff, "K"

I love this man. he just hung out.

At some point, an employee came up to my dad and asked him what we were looking for.
My dad had no idea what I was looking for so he just sent him to me. Being the insanely insecure tween that I was, and having my father there, I was reticent to provide a response. I have as stutter so I am very opposed to starting a conversation out of nowhere with a stranger ( since then, I've gotten meds for my stutter/anxiety and they're working great!). Think of Judah Friedlander, without the fame. He is the employee who approached my dad.

I just waved the guy and my dad off as if I knew what I was doing.

My dad calls to me, "What are you looking for?"
And of course I just scoff
Within earshot I hear my dad relay to the employee "it starts with an L and ends with a K"
and INSTANTLY Judah Friedlander says "Linkin Park?"

I look at him and nod

And he brings us over to the appropriate rack and ( I ) make a purchase.

After that, I would listen to the entire thing as I went to bed every night for years.

And THAT is how I got my first album.

probably still one of my favorite albums and definitely my favorite from linkin park, which my family now refers to as "begins in an L, ends in a K" xD

Hybrid Theory and Meteora are two of the greatest albums ever made. Absolute bangers.

My best friend in high school and me were killing time in an electronic store, you could play Surf Rocket Racers on Dreamcast there for free. When that got boring we headed over to the CD section, scan the bar code and listen to the albums for free. Man that store was sick!
We listed to a lot of fantastic music and were just exploring, when we found Children of Bodom - Follow the reaper. We were 13, the cover art looked cool and the music assaulted our ears. It also sounded like nothing we had ever heard before in our lifes, so we bought the CD. It probably took about 6 or 7 times of listening to the complete album before it stopped sounding terrible and was, when it came to discovering metal, like learning to swim in a stormy ocean. \m/
Just listening again brings back so many memories, Thank you!^^

Ah those were the days, bought that album myself. Enjoyed although I did prefer the Bizkit (and still do). Hell I have some
records on cassette, my 15 year old sister didn’t even know what a cassette was.

For all of the benefits of modern day digital distribution convenience, there was something more personal about saving one’s pocket money for a few weeks, taking a risk on an album you’ve maybe heard 2 tracks off and having to grind that out until you get the money to get new music.

Soooooo super cool thread! Been very topical for me lately.

For the past few months, I've been really digging and re-digging their content. Watching concerts, lesser known songs, covers, etc. on YouTube as much as I could. It started with quarantine, Mike Shinoda began streaming on Twitch and uploading daily content to YouTube. In addition to being a creative master, he's an awesomely wonderful human being, and just so wholesome. Heck he's streaming now:

https://www.twitch.tv/officialmikeshinoda

Relistening to all the music in retrospect, especially after Chester's suicide, really hits a spot. I maintain Hybrid Theory is the greatest complete album ever made, at least to me/my generation. Hybrid Theory got me thru highschool, Meteora thru college (or what I completed, at least).

Anyways we are exactly one month away from the 20th anniversary of HT. Check out the anniversary edition if you want some nostalgia:

I sincerely believe that had eminem never existed, fred durst would have been considered the coolest human being in the early 2000's. for the longest time i had no idea that "Faith" was a George Michael cover; it has always been my favorite limp song :D

HT was great in that I only knew 2 songs before I bought the CD, but every track on that thing is a banger

I have had very similar trips down the rabbit holes on youtube :D
Had no idea the 20th anniversary was coming up but that sounds about right. damn so old O_O will check out the anniversary edition, thanks!
the only 'celeb deaths' that really got me were chester and chris cornell. maybe because they happened so close together or because both of them wrote a lot of songs I identified with. a huge ratm -> audioslave -> prophets fan as well.

I think my perception was skewed because I was in the usa and eminem was pretty much public enemy number one and was to blame for all the things that marilyn manson hadn't already been blamed for .

it's funny you mention children of bodom because i'm actually a huge fan. my favorite cover of all-time is their cover of billy idol's rebel yell. don't even get me started on in flames

edit: grammar

edit2: i also mentioned earlier that limp bizkit's cover of 'faith' was my favoite cover. they're both up there, ok? ffff

Yesss. They actually sound pretty good these days, sometimes these reunions kinda suck.

I wonder if Fred Durst is pissed he’s had to drop the iconic red hat look in the MAGA era?

The only album I ever bought on CD for my car was Meteora. God my friends hated me so much when I didn't have an AUX cord and that was all I had on the car. But hey, it was amazing.

Miss you Chester. Linkin Park was awesome.

I was only 4 at the time and didn't discover LP until I was 10 or 11, right before the release of Minutes to Midnight. Hybrid Theory is an album I can still go back to and put on a random song with no clear preference. Just an absolute banger of an album. Tween you had excellent taste.

haha i had like 5-6 cd's in my car from 17-18 before i had to leave it home for school. hybrid theory, the live@hyde park 2-cd rhcp concert, marshall mathers lp and slim shady lp. I was a one man wrecking-ball.

this was around when people were figuring out how to plug random devices into their cars, switching to fm and syncing frequencies; aux technology was nowhere near its current form so i always had the power xD

why thank you my 2nd album was sum41's all killer no filler which came out about half a year later. not as much of a classic but damn if i didn't spend at least 1-2 hours every night flipping between these two in my walkman and silly ass cloth and plastic headphones that broke every time i accidently fell asleep in them.

like most around my age the song 'in the end' (which was literally on every radio station 24/7) really piqued my interest. really didn't like 'crawling,' the other highly anticipated single and still don't, though that is considered one of their more popular ones on the debut. it was and is a little too on the nose for me, perhaps. but yes. on a 0-1 scale, 'crawling' is a 0 and the rest are 1's.

i love that before he started the song he said, 'i'll never do this song justice.'
far beyond his time. i have no idea what fred durst is doing now.. please lmk if you know?
but if you are covering this song, you never give the mic to the crowd. the point is the people never get to speak. you clutch that mic and you scream ' now your under controooooooooolllllllllllllll'

edit: fun fact: killing in the name of and soundgarden's blow up the outside world were banned from the airwaves following 9/11; no song that was against authoritarianism was allowed on the radio during the first few years of the 'war.' imagine that. fuckin' a man

but if you are covering this song, you never give the mic to the crowd. the point is the people never get to speak. you clutch that mic and you scream ' now your under controooooooooolllllllllllllll'

edit: fun fact: killing in the name of and soundgarden's blow up the outside world were banned from the airwaves following 9/11; no song that was against authoritarianism was allowed on the radio during the first few years of the 'war.' imagine that. fuckin' a man

Well apparently he directed a film starring John Travolta, although I have yet to see it this review is amusing

More curiously Electric Six’s ‘Gay Bar’ had the lines ‘Start a war, start a nuclear war’ censored on the radio over here, despite the line not really taking place in a song with a particularly anti-authority message

My memory may be faulty but I always was under the impression it was more stations themselves doing it to not offend the wave of patriotic fervour but I might be remembering wrong.

The kind of people who use the word snowflake but can’t handle even the most minute criticism of their country would be moaning no doubt.

ironically, the people who used the term 'snowflake' are the snowflakes themselves. in that they cannot hear anything contrary to their beliefs. when confronted by logic they rebound with nonsensical bullschticillarly and deflect unto thee, so you must say. HEY. but what about this thing you said that I have on record! to which they reply, "Ha! Ha! Ha! uhh gtg bye"

haha i had like 5-6 cd's in my car from 17-18 before i had to leave it home for school. hybrid theory, the live@hyde park 2-cd rhcp concert, marshall mathers lp and slim shady lp.

If you like Sum41 as well... this was great:

One of my main issues with Hybrid Theory was I’m unsure as to what the theory was, and if it involved a theory about genetic hybrids (possibly the Linkin boys predicting the SC2 plot line) or was merely a hybrid of two theories, possibly almost anything.

Perhaps a hypothetical that rap and metal can co-exist perhaps?

no i think it just sounds cool. the cover art also doesn't make sense but it looks cool. sometimes we have to shut off our grey matter and just let the smoothness take over.
edit: i'm still upset you haven't acknowledged the bad words clip i posted. the movie is an absolute gem and this scene couldn't be more perfect xD no pressure or anything........

I always thought the "hybrid" might have referred to asian/caucasian band member mix too, in addition to rap/metal/clean vocal mix. But yeah could be it just sounds cool.

haha yeah. we are pattern seekers. but i think at the end of the day it's just a band wants to get as many eyes as possible so to have a cool name serves a purpose. linkin park? what the hell is that? lincoln park? they grew up in cali. did they have a meaningful domestic visit to a lincoln park? no, it's just... linkin park.

You may want to take a look at Scroobius Pip. He has a pretty unique style of hiphop. He is also quite open about the issues he had with a stutter as he grew up (and still has to a much lesser degree), and how he learned to work around it. I have heard numerous methodologies to overcoming it, and the most successful I have seen have to do with tackling it rhytmically.

(the struggle video)
(discussion on having a stutter).

Btw. I heard Soundgarden's song you referred to plenty around that time (I am old enough to remember those times very well), and I lived in one of the most conservative places in the country.

It was also my first album. I remember I won some money during phyics olympiad and decided to get an album, still remember how I saw it in the corner and on the right was Eminem, who I had already heard, and these guys. It was a pirate cassette with Hybrid spelled as Hibrid, lol. I think I still can sing along all the songs from that album.

A little wall of music: LP;s Meteora, SOAD and Korn as well. In the white I copied from a friend another "album" of Linkin Park, which turned out to be a mix of Chester's time in Grey Daze and pre-Hybrid Theory songs, haha.
