I’m retiring with no intention of returning to progaming. My interest in playing and competing has dwindled substantially as of late. While I did well during the LotV beta by winning some weekly cups and getting 3rd place at the Red Bull Archon tournament, after Red Bull I struggled to find any motivation to practice. Part of me felt some amount of injustice at the patch that hit shortly before that event. I know that if I had prepared better or played better then we could’ve qualified for the next step but it still hurt. Beasty and I had been practicing LotV since ~April individually as well as internal archon mode customs for months before the event. To see all my preparation fail me again was too much, especially when it seemed like some of the other teams had only practiced a relatively very short time. Regardless, for about a month after the event I tried practicing on and off but never found myself interested in putting in the time and effort to adapt and improve.
As I step away from StarCraft 2’s competitive sphere, I’ll be focusing more heavily on the board game I began work on earlier this year, code named Discord. I haven’t been looking for any commentary jobs within the scene. While I’m not adverse to the idea, right now it feels best to just focus my efforts elsewhere. For years and years I’ve devoted so much time to competing. The opportunities I’ve had I wouldn’t trade for anything else. I’ve been able to travel the world and meet so many different people. While I was never a champion, I had some good results here and there. StarCraft gave me meaning that I sorely needed in my early college years while providing a solid focus and place to invest my energy and competitive drive as the scene and my skills grew. I learned more about how my mind and body function while pushing the limits of what’s possible.
For the rest of my life, I will use the skills I gained from progaming with joy although even now it pains me so much to leave. Retiring is like giving up on a friend. We’ve spent so much time together and experienced so many different places and events. To simply have that cut out of my life hurts. I’ve always been in love with the idea of progaming. There’s nothing I ever wanted more than to walk on the front stage of a Dreamhack or IEM as a champion. I wanted to make this my life for as long as possible, but I’m finally acknowledging the reality of my results and motivation. It’s time for me to move on to something else where I intrinsically want to devote as much energy as in me. Life is what we make of it, and you can bet that I’m going to pour my soul into my next project.
I’ll be providing periodic updates on Discord including insight into the design process, future mechanics, and playtesting opportunities in the near future.
Thanks to everyone who’s supported me for all these years. It’s been a trip.

All the best man and good luck with your board game! Thanks for all the great games and moments you provided, hopefully we will still hear from you in the future!

So long sir, hopefully you'll stick around the community some, maybe a TL beta for your board game project. I'd be happy to help and best of luck.

Thanks for everything, you are, will be and have always been an awesome player and personality for the scene. Maybe we will see you another day9 in another game.

Good luck QXC, you will be greatly missed. In my opinion you are one of the greatest analytical minds to touch Starcraft. Thank you for everything you did in our community.
|
Never forget John Lennon the Toto Destroyer
|
After watching the RedBull tourney, I was pretty heated. I can't even imagine how let down you were. It is just not worth your time and money to invest into Starcraft, if Blizzard isn't going to uphold their end of the deal. Fixing the chargelot accidental buff should've been a quick turn around fix. If they can't do a 24 hour turn around fix for that, how could you trust them with anything else that would come along? How long did it take for them to fix swarmhosts?
Starcraft is a great game to play for fun, but competition would just be too nerve wracking. Congratulations on a great career, and good luck with your future endeavors!!
|
I remember that one TL-attack, where you were the first Terran to win on the 999/999 supply cap map, and then you started practicing your mechanics??? I was like WTF? You were the most gifted player I've ever seen, Rotti syndrome finally got you I feel (playing a style you like instead of what is the best style).
I don't care for boardgames, but I will remember you, you have been heard of, quixotic good sir.

Good luck, qxc! I met you at MLG Anaheim in 2010 and got your autograph, which I still have. You were an awesome player and your all-kill of IM will forever enshrine you in the legends of Starcraft.

All the best and good luck Qxc you were my favourite foreign Terran in the early days of SC2! Your all kill on FXO is one of my fondest SC2 memories

Thank you for the great matches and being a great Terran ambassador. Best of luck in you future projects, looking forward to the board-game results.

Good Luck qxc! It's been great reading your thoughts and work. Hope everything goes well with your board game.
Stay in touch with everyone
|
Great decision. It's hard to be honest with one's ability. The only way to succeed in this field is to be at the very, very top.
I guess the next question for you is what to do. You obviously have a gift at video games since you were still one of the best in the world. Is it possible to compete in another game which you might be able to get to the very top?
You can also get a job that's more standard like working in a marketing office but your superior video games skills may not translate at all so you might end up with an "ordinary" life.
|
GGs, qxc.
I rooted hard for you at the first (and only) SC2 event I was ever able to get to, IEM at NYCC, back in 2010. Gutted when you lost to Fenix.
Good luck in the future, and thanks for years of entertainment

Good luck with everything and thank you

Best of luck QXC, hopefully you will still follow the scene and maybe even be a caster at some event. That being said, it sucks when your motivation fails you, especially when you are a progamer. :/
|
Sad to see you go QXC. Your play and attitude were always an inspiration to me. For example I always remember that clip where you smash your keyboard in frustration but then still gg in the end. While many may look at that clip as an example of someone losing control, I've always thought such people don't understand just how much one can pour oneself into something, particularly something as difficult as Starcraft. It is only normal as a human being to have an emotional response there, but to be able to collect onself and still behave in a sportsmanslike manner is an example to follow.
I wish the very best on your future endeavors and I look forward to playing Discord some day.

We've all been here through multiple retirements but qxc's is for me one of the sadder ones. Really, thank you for everything! The games, the interviews, the casting and the blog writeups!
|
Hi qxc, it was wonderful having you in the SC2-scene. You brought a lot of insight into the game and you clearly showed your passion for the game. I wish you all the best in the future.

LOTV killing Terrans in-game and outside...There are barely any legit terran players and most streamers have switch races. Another sad day....When will blizzard learn???

Damn, sad to see one of the first terran I really rooted for...
I'll always remember the all-kill in GSTL 2011 season 1, how great it was to see you that in a Korean team league at that time!
I'll also remember how you always tried to find new ways of playing terran (more ghosts <3)!
Best of luck qxc!

One of my favorite foreigner retires, it's a sad day. Thanks for all of your contributions to the scene, and good luck with what you're doing next.

Good luck QXC. You've always been one of my favorite players to watch. I remember putting on a community tournament a few years ago and the grand prize was a coaching session with you. Everyone was so excited to play in the tournament! I hope to run into you around the scene, board game or esports! Thank you for all you've done for our community.

Good luck QXC! You're a great guy and you have been one of the best US/Foreign Terrans for an insane amount of time. I'm sure you will go on to do big things!

You'll be missed! But if you pour as much energy into your next project as you have into StarCraft all these years, I can't really see how it can go wrong. Good luck QXC

Wishing you all the best and u know, I hope we gonna see you commentating somewhen, it would be rly nice!

Hey qxc, it's been a pleasure watching you since the beginning of SC2. Good luck with Discord and your future endeavors. Please keep us updated on TL!
Thanks for all the memories.

best of luck!
I still remember being awed standing behind you and watching at Assembly winter '10 in Helsinki.
|
Wasn't he very sudo-active anyway? Didn't see him around at all in 2015 aside from Archon mode tournaments. Still a very respectable player and i hope he sticks around for strategic stuff and so on, i think he has a very deep understanding of the game and is great at explaining things.
|
I'll never forget your rage video on YouTube. I've always looked for you in the tournaments and cheered you on man. Sad to see you go, but nothing lasts forever.
|
Best of luck in all you do, Qxc.
And, like many, I'll never forget watching your all-kill of IM live. That truly was an amazing moment.

QXC -- - - - I Met you at MLG DC back in 2010 i talked to you in the crowd, recognised you from pictures ON TL. You signed my poster of MLG and you wrote QXC PS SC2 > HALO cause the background was halo.

QXC. You are a boss. A true boss. You've always done things the way you've seen fit, and not the way people said they should be done.
You were always able to look so much deeper into this beloved game than most others will ever be able to do. You have a brilliant mind, and a big heart. You are someone I admire, and the SC2 community will not be the same without you.
Inject your passion into whatever it is your hand finds to do, and with that drive to be the best at whatever it is you are doing, may you find true satisfaction, success, and a heart filled with joy!
|
One of the most likable personalities leaving the SC2 scene,
Sad day, but good luck on your future.
|
SC2 and this forum is depressing the heck out of me =(
When I see this kind of stuff all I can think about is the hype surrounding SC2 WoL Beta.... hands down the best gaming years of my life. Now I just realize how foolish it all was.
You'll always be ROOT.qxc to me dood! Thanks for the memories and good luck <3
|
From the beta reapers to the bandanas to the garbage can parkour to the IM all-kill to the keyboard smash... I've loved every minute of watching your games and you're easily one of the most interesting and entertaining and cerebral players
Gonna miss you.
Best of luck on whatever comes next for you

It was really fun meeting and hanging out with you when you came to Korea man~ speaking of which, I'll forgive you for making me throw up back then when I get to try Discord d:

Wish you the best, still remember the all kill and your tenure at HMC.

Good luck in the future! I look forward to hearing more about the board game!

I had to go back and watch your IM all-kill again. I'm grinning as widely as you were. Best of luck in your future endeavors, qxc!

Never been your biggest fan in terms of SC2 gaming i'll admit, but as a person you always carry yourself well in interviews etc.and truly seem like a genuine guy who thrives on his passions. I appreciate that a great deal and wish you well with your future ventures.
True gentleman whether your a fan of his or not. Goodbye QXC and all the best of luck.

You will be greatly missed QXC.. I really liked to see you in the pro gaming scene. Thank you for devoting yourself to Starcraft and following your passion. Now it's time to move on for you like you say, you can count on all our support. God bless

I'm logging in again after years just to comment here. qxc got me into SC2 since the early WoL beta days after years of having left BW behind. It is really, really sad to see him go and it will be the last nail in the coffin for my interest on SC2.
Good luck on your endeavors Kevin. I will always remember learning concepts like "aggro", "drop" and "harassment" from your streams in the early WoL beta days.
All killing IM is one of my fondest memories of SC2 as I watched it live.
Keep us posted on your board game!
Edit: life's what you make it has been my TL signature for a while.
|
Good luck with whatever you choose to do in life after this. It's been a pleasure having you around in the scene for all the years, and you will certainly be missed!

Thank you for all you have done for us. You will be missed. My favorite TL attack was with you; thanks again for that.
Good luck out there.
|
It won't be the same without QXC around. I met him at the Day9 release party, watched the all-kill live, and watched any games I noticed since. I don't know what else to say but thanks. It was always fun to watch QXC play and I always felt like he gave it his all. Thanks for all the writing, commentary, and great games.
edit: + Show Spoiler +

I'm so bummed about this. I was a huge fan of your articles, your casting, a lot of your play, I miss your stream, ugh! You are a very, very good person to have in the scene. Going to designing your board game is depriving the scene of someone who did a lot to truly improve it. I know it's your new passion, but please do consider making a return to some aspect of the scene.
|
Dude, your build order tester and amazing passion inspired me to dive head first into starcraft and strive to improve! I thought, "If this guy can be in college and then decide to devote his heart and soul to becoming a programer and make it happen... Well that's some crazy shit, and maybe anything is possible if sink my heart and soul into it."
Thanks for the inspiration.

Hey qxc, I was in your SC2 team forum/Skype group for a brief period, and we met at MLG Columbus a while back. I was going through some tough times, and having a chance to work with you was a really big deal to me. I haven't followed SC2 for a while now, but I felt compelled to drop by and say thank you.
Best of luck to you on your game and whatever else is in your future.
PS: Sorry about the TvP air build at IEM. My bad.
|
You were always my favourite EU/NA Terran to watch (bigbangsc from twitch chat). It is a shame fate did not align right, your ability was definitely deserving of more success. The IM all kill to this day is some of the most impressive play, especially at the time, I've ever seen.
It is easy to see how much you loved the game, and your presence in the scene for us Terrans in particular, will be missed. Good luck dude.
|
This thread has grown long and I doubt you'll see this... Still, I have to say one of the most oddly inspiring events I've seen was when you qualified for TSL 3. I remember reading the interview afterwards about how you were just givin'er in some dingy internet cafe in Spain taking a break from studying to pwn some noobs and thereby carved your piece in an iconic part of Starcraft history. Something about the scene just hit home for me.
Also your Archon mode games were awesome.
Good luck with everything QXC!
|
Kevin. Again, although this was 16 months ago, I would like to thank you for coming to Taiwan. You're one of the guys in my life who has had a positive impact on me.

Watching qxc all kill IM is one of my two favorite Starcraft memories. I remember exactly where I was when I watched those games, what I was doing, where I was in life. I remember how hilariously confused MVP was when qxc had a banshee floating above his base and MVP had like two SCVs left. Thanks qxc. I will miss watching you play.
