I'm not the OP but I know the medical studies very well in France. The P2 and D1, second and third year are really easy, students are not studying that much, they are always partying. Between D2 and D4, 3 years, they are working really hard because they have a big test at the end of D4 which is the most important test of the whole med study. After that they are working in hospitals as intern. They are not doctor yet but they are still helping and healing you.

Yeah what he says is correct. I will add that the interns are basically running public hospitals in France, as they work 50 to 60 hours per week (remember France's legal worktime is 35 hours per week) for a very low salary on the basis that they are still students (from memory the monthly salary is ~1300€ for first year of internship - which is below the legal minimal salary in France - , ~1500€ for second year, and ~2000€ for the following year(s) edit : by comparison the average salary of a doctor working full-time (35h/week) in a public hospital is 5 699 €). Also, the big test at the end of D4 is what determines who will do which specialty ; it's a national test, and then the guy/girl ranked first choses his specialty and where he/she wants to do his internship, then the guy/girl ranked second does the same, etc (the numbers of available places in internship for each specialty in each city is limited, which is why the ranking in this test is very important)

Don't let the American med students know 50-60 hours is a lot. They might freak out that they are capped at 80 per week on a 4 week average, so it's not hard to exceed 80 in a week or up to 30 hrs in a single shift.

That pay seems pretty crappy though. Not sure how much of that is a result of our overtime laws and the hours though as opposed to better compensation in general?

I suppose I'm not considering the cost of medical school either though.

Are you familiar with how the American system works? (I ask because I was wondering if you could compare them?).

Well to be fair 50-60 hours working in a hospital, while people's lives may depend on you and you being tired increases the risks of making a critical mistake, is a lot. 80 hours is however pretty insane, is it 80 hours working like a real doctor would do?

The pay is pretty crappy for the work required, but since the French national healthcare system is already in a huge deficit I guess they have to find some tricks to limit that. And yeah the cost of medical school may factor in, because it's basically free in France (since it's totally public).

I'm not familiar with the way the American system works, sorry^^ I just guess that it costs a lot and you have to take a big loan to pay med school? And also that the numerus clausus doesn't exist?

In Denmark your internship is decided by a lottery giving you a number and then the same as in France (so #1 picks, then #2 .... etc). I would have much preferred if it was a test that decided it as I would have felt at least some control of it myself. At least in Denmark it is only for a year and then you can apply to specialties wherever in the country.

EDIT: The workload of a young doctor in the US is insane and it is indeed up to 80 (I actually thought 90 was the limit?) hours a week. It isn't that long ago these regulations were put in place and it was actual quite controversial as many senior american doctors felt that the young doctors wouldn't see enough patients with their reduced hours to gain the required proficiency.

Man you need to move to Finland. Avarage salary for doctors in Finland (2014) is 7118 € and you dont need to fear you dont find a job For some reason finnish universities doesnt make enough doctors. Maybe they want to keep salaries high!

Stfu about stuff you obviously know nothing about. It's pretty close to what he described in Finland too. Public hospital salary =/= average doctor salary. Residents run hospitals in Finland with relatively shit pay too. But eventually you can make 10-15k easily if you work hard and do a 50-60 h week. That means having a day job + (being on call) + a private practise. Or sometimes only private practise.

Grats op for making it. I hope you'll enjoy being a doctor but let me tell you it's such bs sometimes and people like this guy I quoted will play a huge role in ruining it for you. Rember that being a doctor is not about money. There are easier ways to make a decent salary. It really is all about passion and helping others.
